Hopatcong businesses push for I-80 sinkhole relief

HOPATCONG, N.J. (PIX11) — Multiple businesses in Hopatcong, New Jersey, are hoping the state will change its requirements so they are eligible for I-80 grant relief funds. Currently, relief through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority is only available to businesses in Morris County that are within a five-mile radius of the sinkhole. Businesses in Sussex County that are within the same radius do not qualify. More Local News 'I think it's kinda crazy because we're just literally down the road from the sinkholes,' said Aldo Chavez, a manager at Chapala Grill 4 in Hopatcong. Like many restaurants surrounding the sinkholes, Chapala Grill 4 has seen a drop in customers, but Chavez can't apply for the grant money because the business is located in Sussex County. State Assemblymember Mike Ignanamort, who represents Hopatcong in District 24, said county lines should be irrelevant, given the circumstances. 'A natural disaster doesn't follow county lines, and nor should the response,' said Ignanamort. Ignanamort said he has been in talks with the NJEDA to expand the grant criteria to include Sussex County. He remains cautiously optimistic. 'We're having good conversations with them,' said Ignanamort. 'We're gonna continue to make the case that this program should be open to Sussex and Morris Counties.' To make matters worse for businesses, however, the N.J. Department of Transportation just announced that the two westbound lanes scheduled to reopen on May 4th will now reopen at the end of May. The DOT said sonic drilling is taking longer than expected. NJ businesses around I-80 sinkhole get creative to get customers in Those couple of extra weeks are critical to seasonal businesses along Lake Hopatcong, including marinas and restaurants. 'You have Mother's Day coming up, which is gonna fall within that two-week delay,' said Lisa Palanci, the COO of Camp Six, a property company that manages several businesses along the waterfront. Palanci said the delays will cost businesses during a critical time when businesses are ramping up for the season. 'When the weather's like it is today, they want to get out to the lake,' said Palanci. 'People are putting their boats in and they want to come up and spend the day on the lake, and there's just that hesitation because they're going to hit traffic.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Tissue donation from Iowa college student helps revive career of Chicago Bulls' Lonzo Ball

DES MOINES, Iowa — A donation from an Iowa college student allowed a famous athlete to continue playing the sport he loves. Alex Reinhardt was 20-years-old when he passed in February of 2023. The Morningside University student loved sports, and his family honored his wish to be an organ and tissue donor. Chicago Bulls basketball player Lonzo Ball is a recipient of Alex's donation. A knee injury nearly ended Ball's career, and an experimental surgery using Reinhardt's tissue allowed him to return to the court. Ottumwa nursing home residents get gift of robotic pets To help honor Alex's legacy, Ball invited Alex's family to a Chicago Bulls game earlier this week, and the Iowa Donor Network helped make it happen. 'When I first reached out to the family, I was only able to tell them that there was an elite athlete who their son's donation had gone to. Already, that was just a huge excitement, we hadn't even shared who this individual was yet. When I was able to give that call and let them know that it was Lonzo Ball with the Chicago Bulls it was just super exciting … Chicago just welcomed us in, the Bulls welcomed us in. Lonzo just really wanted to make this special for the family,' said Kate Granzow, Manager of Family Advocates with the Iowa Donor Network. Last year alone the Iowa donor network facilitated more than 1,100 tissue donations. Suspect in shooting that injured 1 in Fort Dodge arrested

FORT DODGE, Iowa — A suspect in a shooting that injured one person in Fort Dodge last month has been arrested. On March 28 the Fort Dodge Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 1400 block of 4th Avenue South. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found an adult male who had been shot in the face. The victim was transported to a hospital with a non-life threatening injury. 1 dead in fiery I-80 crash involving semis Shortly after the shooting, Fort Dodge police issued an arrest warrant for 41-year-old Dontay Diekman in connection to the case. Nearly a week passed and Diekman still hadn't been apprehended, prompting police to announce an increase in the reward money to $500 for anyone who provided information that resulted in Diekman's arrest. On Friday morning, three weeks after the shooting, Fort Dodge police announced that Diekman had been arrested. Police said a tip came in that led officers to where Diekman had been staying — a residence in the 1500 block of 20th Place in Des Moines. With the help of the Des Moines Police Department, Diekman was taken into custody without incident. Diekman has been charged with attempt to commit murder, going armed with intent, and possession of a firearm as a felon. Police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
