Man dies from injuries following a fight inside a Phoenix motel room, PD says
The Brief A man in his early 50s was killed after he was reportedly stabbed inside a Phoenix motel room on Saturday, May 31. Police say the person who stabbed him is claiming self-defense and has been released from detainment. The investigation into what happened is ongoing, and police say a charging decision will be made once the investigation wraps up. PHOENIX - A man was found unresponsive in a Phoenix motel room after being stabbed on Saturday, and died at the hospital not long after, police said. What we know He was reportedly stabbed on May 31 at around 3:45 p.m. at an unspecified hotel near 7th Street and I-17 in central Phoenix. "When officers arrived, they were directed to a room where an unresponsive man was found on the ground with obvious signs of injuries. The fire department treated the man and transported him to the hospital where he later died. A second man was found on the motel grounds and was detained by officers after he was pointed out by several witnesses. The man also had obvious signs of injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment," Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky said. Investigators say it appears there was a fight between the two men inside the room, and that both men were using items inside the room as weapons, leading to the stabbing. "The surviving male was interviewed and provided detectives a self-defense claim. The details from the initial investigation were shared with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. In consultation with the County Attorney, the man was released pending the outcome of the case. A charging decision will be made at the conclusion of the investigation. Any additional information is part of an ongoing investigation," Sgt. Krynsky said. What we don't know Police didn't release any names in this case, but said the man who died is in his early 50s. Investigators didn't say why the men were fighting in the first place.

ADOT opens new lanes on Interstate 17 just in time for Memorial Day travel
The Brief New lanes are open on Interstate 17 between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City. The additional lanes should relieve traffic congestion in both directions for Memorial Day travelers. The expansion is part of ADOT's Interstate 17 improvement project. PHOENIX - The new Interstate 17 lanes north of Phoenix are now open between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City, just in time for drivers heading out this Memorial Day weekend. ADOT added a third lane in both directions. What we know Drivers can expect to see an extra lane for a 15-mile stretch between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City. Friday is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year, but travelers are finding the new lanes extremely helpful. ""Love it. Yeah," saidd one commuter Steve McLaughlin. "I can't wait for them to open the entire freeway because we've been waiting so long. I live in Phoenix, and I also live in Black Canyon City. I have a second home up there and it's just been terrible the last several years, just going back and forth. But, you know, it's all good. Things come with time, I guess." Another, Matt Kraske said the added lane on I-17 was a long time coming. "I love that added lane, especially going up north to Flagstaff. It's going to be really helpful. We've gone. I've lived in Flagstaff. I was born and raised there, lived down here now, so I 17. It's been a huge part of my life. It's always been the road home basically for me. So now that they're adding an extra lane, it's going to be a huge, huge help with truckers and keeping the slow people in the right lanes and allowing everybody else to pass in the left lanes," he said. Cammie Baker also likes what she's seen. "I like I like the three lanes. That's awesome. I haven't gotten past like Black Canyon City. I haven't gone past that to see what's going on up there. People tell me, Don't go. You're not going to like it. I'm like, 'Okay, note taken.'" The backstory The additional lanes in both directions are part of ADOT's Interstate 17 improvement project where they plan to build eight miles of flex lanes between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. This project has been in the works for years. Construction began in September 2022. Drivers say they are very excited to know that this third lane has finally opened up in both directions.

What are flex lanes? New lanes introduced on Interstate 17 to alleviate traffic congestion
The Arizona Department of Transportation is set to introduce a new type of lane on Interstate 17 by the end of the year: flex lanes. The one-way, two-lane section will stretch for eight miles along I-17 between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. "From an engineering perspective, this is a system that is designed to work," said I-17 project spokesperson Laura Douglas. "It will be an efficient system for (drivers) and to move traffic." The flex lanes are part of ADOT's solution to alleviate traffic along the ever-congested corridor that connects the Valley with Flagstaff. The lanes are part of a broader $522 million, 23-mile improvement project, which also includes widening the interstate to three lanes from Anthem Way to Black Canyon City and replacing and widening 12 bridges. Douglas said the flex lanes were the best solution to ease traffic, especially heading north from Phoenix. She said the mountainous terrain would have made it nearly impossible—and much more costly—to widen the eight-mile section. It also would have required long-term closures for rock blasting. Here's what to know about the flex lanes. The state department says the lanes are a first in Arizona. "We're excited, the department is excited about the system," Douglas said. "I think drivers will understand how they work, and we want to make sure that they are comfortable and they're educated about how it's going to work." Currently, there are no plans to expand the system beyond the I-17 corridor between Phoenix and Flagstaff. The department has been building the expansion since September 2022. ADOT estimated that the project would take three years to complete. Construction was completed primarily on weekdays, with lane closures scheduled at night, ADOT said. No weekend closures were expected to allow for travel during peak days and times. The flex lanes work like regular general-purpose lanes, adding two lanes to the interstate in one direction, Douglas said. If the lanes are open to northbound traffic, there will be four northbound lanes and two southbound lanes, and vice versa. They will support either northbound or southbound traffic depending on the time of day and traffic flow. Typically, depending on traffic conditions, the lanes will be open to northbound traffic Monday through Saturday and southbound traffic on Sundays. "As the name suggests, they are flexible lanes. They can be open in either direction, depending on greatest need," Douglas said, noting that ADOT traffic camera operators can remotely adjust the direction of the lanes based on the traffic conditions. The flex lanes were built next to the southbound lanes. A tall concrete barrier was put in place to separate the flex lanes from the general-purpose southbound lanes. To access the flex lanes, drivers will transition from the regular lanes through a crossover lane at Coldwater Road in Black Canyon City and use crossover lanes to enter two flex lanes. Drivers will continue on the flex lanes for eight miles and rejoin the main general-purpose lanes through another set of crossover lanes at Sunset Point. The lanes are open to all vehicles, though ADOT recommended slower drivers stay in the general-purpose lanes. The speed limit will be 65 mph. Each direction will have its own series of barriers, Douglas said, creating a fork where the lanes rejoin the regular interstate. According to the project's website, there is an automated net barrier at both ends of the flex lanes, along with multiple swing gates behind the net barrier. The direction of traffic on the flex lanes will be controlled by the barriers. Overhead electronic message boards will also let drivers know whether the lanes are open or closed to their direction of travel, and remote camera operators will monitor the lanes. The lanes were built between Coldwater Road in Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. The flex lanes are expected to open by the end of the year. For now, the lanes act as a detour for northbound traffic. The lane widening portion of the project between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City should be open soon, Douglas said. A few other states use the flex lane system: The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Interstate 5 Express Lanes in Seattle Interstate 25 Central Express Lanes in Denver Interstate 394 in Minneapolis Reversible Express Lanes in Tampa, Fla. State Route 75 San Diego-Coronado Bridge in San Diego Interstate 35E and U.S. 67 in Dallas Reporter Lauren De Young covers Tempe, Chandler, Maricopa County and transportation.
