Hazy Skies Continue as Heat and Humidity Build Across Maryland

Canadian wildfire smoke will keep skies hazy overnight across Maryland, with temperatures falling into the 50s and 60s. While the smoke will be visible, most of it will remain at high altitudes and have little impact on air quality at the surface. Wednesday will bring more sunshine and continued haze as the upper-level smoke persists. Temperatures will soar into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. Some locations may hit the 90-degree mark for the first time this year. The heat continues Thursday, but cloud cover will increase, and humidity will become more noticeable. Highs will again push into the upper 80s, with a muggy feel returning to the atmosphere. Friday will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with a few isolated storms possible across western Maryland late in the day. Baltimore and the I-95 corridor are expected to stay dry. Afternoon highs will reach the mid to upper 80s. The best chance for widespread rain arrives Saturday as a cold front pushes into the region. Expect scattered showers and a few storms, with highs cooling slightly into the upper 70s to low 80s. The front will move out of the area by early Sunday, setting the stage for a beautiful end to the weekend. Sunshine returns Sunday afternoon with lower humidity and highs in the low 80s. Looking ahead, the weather turns unsettled again next week. Showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday and Tuesday, with highs near 80 degrees each day. Forecast confidence drops beyond Sunday, so stay tuned to WJZ for updates as we continue to refine the timing and coverage of next week's rain chances.

I-95 CAP project: Southbound I-95 to close from 676 to Columbus Blvd in early June

The Brief A heads up for travelers and commuters using I-95 as the CAP project will close a portion of the highway overnights beginning in early June through the middle of July. Sundays through Thursdays, southbound I-95 will be shut down between the I-676 ramp to the southbound on-ramp from Columbus Boulevard at East Morris/Water Street. PHILADELPHIA - With the exception of the July 4th weekend, PennDOT has announced the closure of southbound I-95 from the ramp at I-676 through the southbound on-ramp from Columbus Boulevard at East Morris/Water Street in order to install deck beams as a part of the CAP project. What we know PennDOT has announced a next-level step in the CAP project, as they get set to install deck beams for the new concrete covering that will cover I-95 at Penn's Landing. Beginning Tuesday, June 3rd, from 11 p.m. through 5 a.m. Wednesday, southbound I-95 and the ramp from I-676 to I-95 south will close between I-676 and the southbound on-ramp from Columbus Boulevard at E. Morris/Water Street for prep work and equipment setup, officials said. I-95 southbound will be shutdown, with the exception of the July 4th weekend, from Sundays through Thursdays overnight, beginning June 8th and extending to Friday, July 18th, weather permitting. PennDOT said it will close southbound I-95 along with the ramp from I-676 and the inside lane of northbound I-95 between I-676 and the southbound on-ramp from Columbus Boulevard at E. Morris/Water Street in those days and hours, again, weather permitting. How to get around Travelers heading south on I-95 will have to exit at the Girard Avenue exit, or Exit 23, and head south on Delaware Avenue/Columbus Boulevard, and E. Morris Street/Water Street to get back to southbound I-95. Commuters heading east on the Vine Street Expressway will have to get off at 8th Street and follow detours to southbound Columbus Boulevard and East Morris Street/Water Street in order to get back to I-95. Traffic congestion Commuters are urged to factor in extra time to reach their destinations while this phase of the project is underway. In addition to the work being done for the CAP project, PennDOT also announced overnight road closure and construction on northbound I-95 just past the Broad Street (Route 611) Interchange between 11th Street and Darien Street. This work is to begin Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 6, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning for just the one week. This work is part of a $37.4 million project to perform high-priority bridge work. The backstory The I-95 Cap project is the $329 million project to create a nearly 12-acre park at Penn's Landing over the highway. Demolition in and around I-95 at Penn's Landing began in February. Crews have been working on sections in stages in order to create the smallest amount of commuter disruption as possible. The park and improvements are slated to open in spring of 2028. Florida mom killed, three small children injured after truck collides with their van following tire blowout

A Florida mother was killed and her three young children were injured in a car accident on Interstate 95 on Memorial Day after a truck experienced a tire blowout and collided with their van. Olivia Maggs, 32, was driving in the southbound lanes of I-95 by the Pineda Causeway in Brevard County on Monday afternoon when a tire blew out on an F-350, according to FOX 35 Orlando via Florida Highway Patrol. The blowout caused the driver of the truck, which was traveling in the center lane, to lose control and collide with Maggs' Honda Odyssey van, the outlet reported. Both vehicles went off the road and struck a guardrail. Maggs was pronounced dead at the scene, while her three children – an infant girl and two toddler boys – were airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital, according to a GoFundMe set up by Maggs' sister-in-law. "By the grace of God, kind strangers stopped to help and pulled the children from the vehicle," she wrote, adding that the baby girl had a broken femur and a brain bleed. The two boys were also hurt, but "they are okay," she said. The 58-year-old truck driver and his 20-year-old passenger were not injured and remained at the scene of the crash, FOX 35 reported. Maggs was a "dedicated" and "beloved" nurse at Parrish Medical Center, the health system wrote on Facebook in a post mourning her death. She worked at the hospital for nine years and began in the Medical-Surgical Department as a graduate nurse before transferring to the Women's Center. "Olivia's kindness, strength and gentle spirit left a lasting impact on her patients, fellow Care Partners and everyone fortunate enough to know her. Our hearts are with her family, friends and children during this unimaginable time. We are grieving alongside them and will forever carry her memory in our hearts," the post stated. Hundreds of comments were left on the post, with dozens of women sharing their positive experiences with Maggs as a nurse and as a friend. "You never forget the name and face of someone who made such a lasting impression on you. For all three of my children's births at Parrish Olivia was one of the most encouraging and supportive nurses. She guided me through strapping my firstborn in his car seat as we had never done it before and I was so anxious. My heart is with her family and all who mourn her," one woman wrote. More than $126,000 had been donated to the GoFundMe account as of early Wednesday morning. "Olivia was a kind, beautiful soul—a loving and gentle mother, devoted wife, and cherished daughter, sister, friend, and compassionate nurse. Her absence leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her," the GoFundMe reads.
