Who is Sediqullah Atal? Delhi Capitals' new Afghanistan recruit for rest of IPL 2025, replacing Harry Brook

Delhi Capitals has announced Afghanistan batter Sediqullah Atal as a replacement for England's Harry Brook. Brook withdrew from IPL 2025 before the start of the season. Atal was part of Afghanistan's inspiring run in the ICC ODI Champions Trophy in March. He scored a fine 85 against Australia in the group stage match. He has played 49 matches in T20s and has scored 1507 runs at an average of 34.25, including 13 half-centuries. Atal's initial breakthrough came during the Kabul Premier League 2023. He smashed 48 runs in a single over, including 7 sixes in that over. Sediqullah Atal played a pivotal role in Afghanistan's title win at the ACC Men's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024, topping the run-scorers' chart with 368 runs in five matches. Hemang Badani, the Head Coach of Delhi Capitals, welcomed the left-hander to the franchise, 'We are excited to welcome Atal to the Delhi Capitals. He is an exciting, young talent who has impressed everyone with his performances for both the Afghanistan youth and senior teams. Going into this important phase of the tournament, his presence will certainly add depth to our batting lineup.' Delhi Capitals are currently occupying the fourth place in the race to the playoffs and their equation is fairly straightforward. They have taken 13 points from 11 matches and their remaining games are against the three teams in the top four. Beating PBKS (3rd), GT (1st) and MI (4th) will put them in the playoffs. DC have signed 7 overseas players in the IPL auction. Of the five batting options, Harry brook left before the start of the season, Jake Fraser-McGurk was dropped after a string of low scores and Faf du plessis missed out a few games due to fitness issues. Atal's signing should alleviate some of the concerns Stay updated on all the action from the IPL 2025. Gautam Gambhir opens up on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma futures: ‘Till the time they are performing…'

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been Team India's talismen for the better part of nearly 15 years. The duo have stitched countless partnerships and have won the team ICC trophies, especially over the last 12 months. Rohit Sharma captained India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024, in the USA & Caribbean, and the ICC ODI Champions Trophy earlier this year in the UAE. India has also been dominating the ICC rankings in the white ball formats, leading the list in both T20s and One-Day Internationals. However, with the duo seemingly at the end of their career, there has been scrutiny on the futures of both Sharma, who is 38, and Kohli, 36. However, Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has laid to rest any doubts over the place of either player in the team. Speaking at the 'ABP India At 2047 Summit', Gambhir said, 'Till the time they are performing, they should be a part of the team. Performance ensures selection. No coach, selector, or even the BCCI can tell someone to stop playing if they're delivering.' Many Team India fans have gotten a bit impatient with the duo, accusing them of being in the team on past glory. However, Gambhir's clear message is a counter to those comments, as he made it clear it is performance, not reputation, that determines a player's spot in the Indian team. Gambhir also reiterated that the players in the Indian team are selected based on merit and not on his favourites. 'No sportsman plays for farewell. The biggest farewell and trophy is the love of the country. That is what truly matters. 'It's not the coach's job to pick the team; that's for the selectors. My responsibility is to prepare whoever is selected to perform for India,' he added. While the scrutiny on Kohli is comparatively smaller, Sharma has had a poor outing with his bat over the last 12 months. The Indian captain, who retired from the T20 format after the 2024 WC win, has struggled for India in both red and white balls and his poor form has continued in the IPL as well. However, Gambhir has a lot of praise for 'Hitman', as Sharma is fondly known by his fans. 'I respect Rohit Sharma a lot, I respect the human being he is, I respect the person he is, I respect what he has done for Indian cricket and his contribution and I have got a lot of time for someone like Rohit Sharma,' the Indian coach said at the summit. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are well placed to play the IPL 2025 playoffs with their respective teams. Kohli's Royal Challengers Bengaluru are currently on top of the standings with 16 points from 11 games while Sharma's Mumbai Indians have zoomed to third (14 points from 11 games) on the back of six consecutive wins. ‘I started eating parathas because of that...'; Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill reveals Hrithik Roshan connection

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill has had a great season so far in the Indian Premier League, personally with the bat as well as being the captain of the table-topping team. However, his latest claim to fame isn't on the cricket field but on the glamorous pages of The Hollywood Reporter India. The swashbuckling superstar openened up about everything from favourite films to food habits — revealing a side fans rarely see off the pitch. The right handed batter made a surprising confession about the origins of his love for parathas. 'Growing up, I was a big fan of Hrithik Roshan. I used to hate parathas as a kid, but I started eating them because Hrithik's character in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai loved aloo parathas!' confessed Gill laughed, though he now opts for a gluten-free version to stay match-fit. He confesses he doesn't binge-watch when he escapes to the movies; he 'immerses' himself. And when he's not batting or training, his 'entourage' of best friends keeps him sane — whether they're battling on the PlayStation or dealing cards. 'I can do without everything… but if I'm not surrounded by my best friends, I start feeling depressed,' he tells the Hollywood Reporter India . Gill's cinematic inspirations are as intense as his cricket: 'I'm a bit biased towards Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, and Cillian Murphy. I watched [Christopher Nolan's] Dark Knight trilogy when I was a kid — anything they make, I have to watch.' Yet his childhood wasn't all blockbuster-style fun. By seven, he was already playing with under-14s and barely attended school. 'My attendance in school from the eighth to the tenth standard was 12 per cent,' he recalls. Having already tasted glory by winning the 2025 ICC ODI Champions Trophy, he still dreams big and hopes to hoist more ICC titles with players he grew up idolising: 'To do it with players like Rohit bhai, Virat bhai — it's hard to describe that feeling. Sports is the only thing that crowns you as the best in the world.' And his secret to staying grounded? 'It's all about doing your work, believing in the process… whatever happens, just let it happen.' As of April 26, 2025, Gill has piled up 305 runs in eight IPL matches at an average of 43.57 and a strike rate of 153.27 for the table toppers. GT have registered six wins from eight games (12 points, NRR +1.104), and are up next against the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, on April 28.
