One woman, one Sindoor: Sunaina Chautala questions BJP's Sindoor outreach

Representative image (AI) JIND: Indian national lokdal senior leader Sunaina Chautala said that BJP leaders don't understand the value of a woman's sindoor. A woman applies sindoor in the name of only one man in her life. The motive behind BJP distributing sindoor from door to door is unclear, but when the time comes, women will give them a fitting reply on their own. She was here in Jind on Wednesday to meet party workers. She was replying to query regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) ' Operation Sindoor ' which will commence on June 9, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third oath-taking, to highlight the achievements of the Modi 3.0 government nationwide. As part of this month-long public outreach, BJP aims to connect with every household, particularly by gifting vermillion to women and distributing informative pamphlets When the country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot keep his own wife with him, how will he understand the value of sindoor (vermillion)? Women apply sindoor only in the name of one man. Therefore, people will give a better reply to them now," she added. Sunaina Chautala criticized the BJP for disrespecting women through their recent statements. She stated that rajya sabha member Ramchander Jangra's statement is condemnable. BJP should take action against such leaders. As a woman, I would say that Ramchander Jangra should apologize publicly to the women of the state. INLD's women's wing will protest against Ramchandrr Jangra until he resigns, she added. "Videos of BJP leaders go viral, but no strict action is taken against them. BJP's actions have been consistently disrespectful towards the dignity of women. They made big promises to women for electoral gains, but none were fulfilled. Even the promise of Rs 2100 for women in Haryana has not been implemented to this day, said Sunaina Chautala. Speaking on JJP leader Ajay Chautala, she said: "What Ajay Chautala says is true, he is two years older than Abhay Chautala. There is no contradiction in this. Ajay Chautala is indeed the son of former CM late OP Chautala and older than Abhay by two years. But today, he is not a leader of INLD and should not use photo of Chautala Sahab. INLD is a party based on the ideologies of late OP Chautala and Devi Lal. The JJP should clarify the intention behind the photo it is using. Now it is time to close the JJP chapter altogether, she added.

State Information Commissioner picks of Haryana govt. opposed by INLD

Controversy has erupted over the appointments of State Information Commissioners by the Haryana government with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) raising questions over their legality and seeking their immediate cancellation. A petition was also filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday by an advocate challenging the appointments. Chief Information Commissioner TVSN Prasad, a former Chief Secretary, and four State Information Commissioners – Amarjit Singh (a retired Haryana Civil Service officer), Karamveer Saini, Neeta Khera and Sanjay Madan – were administered the oath of office and allegiance by Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Monday. Questioning the appointments, INLD State president Rampal Majra said the choice of Ms. Khera, a former Haryana Public Service Commission member from 2016-22, was in violation of Article 319 (D) of the Constitution, which prohibits appointment of the State Public Service Commission members to statutory posts. Earlier, Kulbir Chhikara, who was a member of HPSC from 2015-2021, was also made State Information Commissioner in 2023 in violation of this provision, said Mr. Majra. The INLD leader also opposed the appointment of Priyanka Dhupar, who faces charges in connection with the gang rape of a minor girl from Assam during her time as a member of the Child Welfare Committee, Bhiwani. 'The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Haryana Child Protection Commission had recommended suspension of Ms. Dhupar and legal action against her. In a case of money fraud, the Bhiwani Bar Association had also debarred her,' said Mr. Majra in a press statement. Ms. Dhupar, though named one of the five State Information Commissioners, was not invited for the oath ceremony. Mr. Majra accused former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of collusion with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party saying that he was part of the committee for selection as a representative of the Opposition, but did not raise any objections. Denying the charges, Mr. Hooda said it was for the scrutiny committee to decide on the eligibility of the candidates and if there is any violation of law, it must be examined. Meanwhile, Punjab and Haryana High Court advocate Jagmohan Singh Bhatti has sent a legal notice to Haryana Chief Secretary, among others, against the appointment of the five State Information Commissioners saying that it was violation of Section 15 (3) of the Right to Information Act, 2005 since the committee must comprise the Leader of the Opposition, but the post was lying vacant since September 12, 2024. Praveen Attrey, media secretary of the Haryana CM, told The Hindu that the appointments were made as per legal provisions and the government had taken legal opinion from the Advocate General in this connection. 'We had written to the State Congress unit seeking the name of their leader for the purpose of representation in the committee, and the party had forwarded Mr. Hooda's name,' said Mr. Attrey.

INLD to stop Punjab vehicles on May 25 amid water row

Deciding to step up pressure on Punjab over the Bhakra water dispute, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Tuesday announced a blockade of the Punjab-Haryana border on May 25, warning that all vehicles bearing Punjab number plates would be stopped. The party threatened to escalate the protest by setting up permanent protest camps (morchas) along the border if Punjab fails to release the full quota of water to Haryana by June 1. Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the party's national and state executive bodies in Chandigarh, INLD national president Abhay Singh Chautala accused the Punjab government of releasing only 5,000 cusecs of water instead of the agreed 9,000 cusecs from the Bhakra system. He said the shortfall had led to a severe water crisis in Haryana, affecting not just irrigation but also drinking water for people and livestock. 'We will not accept even one cusec less than 9,000 cusec. If Punjab does not comply, we will begin permanent sit-in protests from June 1,' Chautala declared. 'On May 25, we will enforce a symbolic blockade of Punjab-Haryana border routes, and all vehicles with Punjab number plates will be stopped.' The party plans to seal the borders in different regions. In the Ambala zone, INLD state president Rampal Majra will lead the blockade at two Punjab border points. At Sirsa, the protest will be led by Aditya Devilal, while Abhay Chautala himself will lead the agitation at the Narwana border with support from the Gurugram zone and Jind district units. Chautala also extended an invitation to the Congress to join the agitation, saying, 'If the Congress is truly serious about the water issue, it should stand with us in this struggle.' The party also passed a resolution to revive its agitation for the construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, a long-pending inter-state water dispute between Punjab and Haryana. In protest against Punjab's refusal to release Bhakra waters, a 15-member delegation of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), led by its national president Abhay Singh Chautala, met Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatraya on Wednesday morning and submitted a memorandum.

Amid water row with Punjab, Haryana Opposition leaders demand action on SYL project

Amid the ongoing tussle between Punjab and Haryana over the release of water from the Bhakra and Pong dams managed by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), Opposition leaders in Haryana on Wednesday accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of dragging its feet on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal project, aimed at effective allocation of water between the two States. Addressing a press conference in Rohtak, Congress leader and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda criticised the BJP for 'failing to protect Haryana's interests' in the SYL issue. 'Despite the Supreme Court giving a verdict in favour of Haryana on SYL, the government has not been able to get water till date.' Mr. Hooda said. He also criticised the BJP's silence on the issue, noting that despite the party's third term in power in the State and at the Centre, no progress has been made. He suggested that the Haryana government convene an all-party meeting and a special session of the Assembly to discuss the issue. Mr. Hooda also alleged that the State government failed to register any objection when officials from Haryana were not appointed to the BBMB. He claimed that the SYL and Dadupur-Nalvi canal projects were stalled during the BJP's tenure. The SYL project was envisaged as a 214-km canal, with 122 km to be constructed in Punjab and the remaining 92 km in Haryana. While Haryana has completed its portion of the project, Punjab, which initiated construction in 1982, shelved it subsequently. 'Modi govt. to blame' Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala, in a post on X, blamed the Narendra Modi government for the crisis. 'The Modi government has the biggest hand in creating this entire crisis,' he said. 'The Modi government, its Power Minister Manohar Lal, and Irrigation Minister C.R. Patil have left the two States, Haryana and Punjab, to fight, and the people of Haryana to suffer in this conflict between the Chief Ministers,' the post read. Mr. Surjewala emphasised that the decision to release water rested with the BBMB, and neither the Punjab nor Haryana governments could make this decision. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday had refused to release more water to Haryana, stating that the neighboring State had already utilised 103% of its allocated share. Mr. Mann accused the BJP of exerting pressure on the Punjab government through the BBMB to meet Haryana's demand. INLD to hold protests Meanwhile, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) also threatened to take to the streets on this issue, with Haryana party president Rampal Majra announcing district-level protests scheduled from May 5 to 7. 'There will be protests in Ambala zone on May 5, Hisar zone on May 6, and Gurugram zone on May 7,' he said. 'A memorandum will be submitted to the Centre, and we will also demand the appointment of a member from Haryana to the BBMB,' he said. Mr. Majra also suggested that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini engage with the Centre to resolve the water problem and criticised the Congress for maintaining silence on the issue.

Gurdas Mann's ‘Dil Da Maal' concert at HAU sparks outrage; suspend VC, says INLD

1 2 3 Hisar: As the nation continued to mourn the death of 26 civilians in the Pahalgam terror attack , celebrations at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) here on Saturday sparked outrage. Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan's ' Dil Da Maal ' programme was scheduled to begin at 7 pm, however by 8 pm, less than half the expected audience arrived, and Maan himself did not take the stage. In contrast, singer Shreya Ghoshal, who had a scheduled concert in Gujarat on Saturday, cancelled her performance in view of the national tragedy. Criticising the event at HAU, INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala blamed the vice-chancellor for allowing a musical event to proceed at a govt institution during a period of " national mourning ". Chautala demanded immediate suspension of the VC. University officials, though, clarified that the Indira Gandhi Auditorium at the institute was booked months earlier by a private organisation, which paid the requisite fee. They emphasised that the event was not organised by the university itself. The concert came to public attention after promotional posters for 'Dil Da Maal' appeared across Hisar city, with ticket prices ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 8,000. Social organisations also condemned the event, noting that a naval officer from Haryana was among those killed in the Pahalgam attack. Despite the loss, such celebrations were allowed to proceed, they lamented. Talking to the mediapersons, Abhay Singh Chautala said: "What could be more shameful than this? When a tragic incident like the Pahalgam terrorist attack has occurred, the govt is busy celebrating instead of acting firmly. The vice-chancellor of HAU must be suspended immediately."
