‘A new name is coming': Sunil Gavaskar makes big IPL prediction after PBKS reach top of the table

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was all praises for the Punjab Kings after the franchise made their way to the number 1 spot on the IPL Points table and secured a spot in the Qualifier 1 of the IPL Notably, Shreyas Iyer led PBKS had defeated the Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets on Monday which took them to 19 points on the IPL Points Table. After the match, Gavaskar said that PBKS picked wisely at the auction and put their belief in a lot of young players. The former India batter also predicted that a new name will be written on the IPL Trophy this year, meaning that a franchise that hasn't won the title before could win this year. 'Nobody took Punjab Kings seriously. They have also picked wisely at the auction, where they got lot of young, uncapped Indian players. They have seen them. They have seen what they have done, where they have done. There are so many of these state leagues which are happening but you cant always go by what's happening in the state leagues. The bowling attacks may not always be good.' Gavaskar was quoted by NDTV Sports as saying. "Even then if somebody like a Priyansh Arya hits seven sixes you know that this guy has talent. Picking the international players too. They have done it really well. Full marks to them. Really happy for them. I told you before the start of the match that a new name will be written on the trophy, well." the former cricketer added. Punjab Kings have played all their league stages matches now and will now next play in the Qualifier 1 on 29 May. A win in that clash will PBKS go through the final of the tournament and could mark the second successive final for Shreyas Iyer. Notably, Iyer has already made history by being the only captain in IPL cricket to lead three different franchises to IPL Playoffs. The young batter had earlier taken Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL Final and Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL Trophy last year after a gap of 10 years

‘He is obvious choice, but…': Ravi Shastri explains why Jasprit Bumrah shouldn't lead India in Test matches

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that he does not want Jasprit Bumrah to be named as India Test captain and instead named two other young cricketers who could take up the mantle. The choice for India Test captain came after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this month. In an interaction with ICC, Shastri said, "See for me, Jasprit would have been the obvious choice after Australia… But I don't want Jasprit to be made captain and then you lose him as a bowler." Shastri noted that Bumrah has had issues with back injuries that made him unavailable for selection for three months. "I think he (Bumrah) has to take his body one game at a time. He's coming back now after a serious injury," Shastri noted. "He'll have played IPL cricket, which is four-over cricket. Now will come the test of bowling 10 overs, 15 overs. And the last thing you want is some pressure on his mind being captain as well.' the former India coach added. Shastri emphasised the importance of having a young captain in the side in the form of Rishabh Pant or Shubman Gill, stating that both of them are obvious choices. 'You groom somebody and I would say Shubman's looked very good. Give him the opportunity. He's 25, 26 years of age, even give him time,' Shastri stated. "There's Rishabh as well. I think these two are the obvious ones I'm looking at because of their age and they have a decade ahead of them. So, let them learn… They've got experience as captains now, captaining their franchise and that makes a difference.' he further added. Notably, Shubman Gill has led Gujarat Titans ably this season, taking them to the top of IPL Points table and on a clear path towards the IPL 2025 Playoffs. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant has had an iffy season both with the bat and as a captain which has led his franchise struggling for a playoff berth.
