Community pantry opens at IRIS Domestic Violence Center

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The IRIS Domestic Violence Center in Baton Rouge took a step forward in its mission to support survivors, officially unveiling its new Community Cupboard. It's a weekend food pantry designed to bring comfort, dignity, and stability to women and children living in its safehouse. The pantry is thoughtfully stocked with shelf-stable groceries, snacks, frozen meals, and beverages — all intended to help restore a sense of normalcy during an often difficult transition. 'This is a space filled with purpose,' said Kasie Coleman, a volunteer with IRIS. 'For women who made one of the hardest and bravest choices anyone could make — choosing themselves.' The community pantry was created in partnership with the Synergy Ministry of Mount Gillion Baptist Church. It's designed to feel like a small convenience store, allowing survivors the autonomy to choose what they need, rather than simply receiving what's available. 'It's not uncommon that when we accept survivors into the safehouse, they come with only the clothes on their backs,' said Kimberly Adams, director of client services at IRIS. 'To have some form of normalcy for them when they arrive is vital for what we do here.' Executive Director Patti Freeman echoed that sentiment: 'Can you imagine being able to walk in and get what you need — instead of being told what you're allowed to have? This is more than most realize.' The pantry relies entirely on community donations and will require ongoing support to stay stocked year-round. 'There are thousands of families that will walk through these doors,' Coleman added. 'We have to keep it filled — not just today, but for the years to come.' Organizers hope the initiative will inspire others to support survivors not only with safety, but with comfort and care. For the safety of the women and children served by IRIS, the location of the safehouse remains confidential.
