But he stayed down to earth by taking public transport to go home at 11pm, deciding not to take a car like most celebrities. "I was shocked to see him on the DLR, then he swapped to the tube. Nobody seemed to notice him really - I was thinking 'he can afford an Uber!' but Adam seemed totally at home on public transport, like a normal person." Myleene Klass, Elvis Costello, U2's Adam Clayton, Rob Brydon and West End star Marisha Wallace were among other guests at the event. They joined ABBA icons Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson who flew to London to attend the event. Adam, 56, took a break from EastEnders in 2020 but returned in August 2023. He has reportedly made big money for his TV gigs, including roughly £500,000 for his 2021 appearance on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here. The actor also earns a reported £250,000 per year for his EastEnders gig. Adam, who officially divorced his wife Beverly in 2022 after 22 years of marriage put £245,763 into a new firm shortly after they first split in 2020. He had earned the cash through acting gigs and funnelled it into his company Caledfwlch — which is Welsh for King Arthur's sword Excalibur. He set it up ahead of his I'm A Celebrity stint in Gwrych Castle, North Wales. This week, Adam was spotted looking loved up with a mystery woman after hitting the gym in London. He shared a kiss with the red-haired woman after a sweaty workout before driving off together. Adam's character Ian Beale debuted in 1985 during the show's first-ever episode. He played a major role in the BBC soap's 40th anniversary episodes when his wife Cindy's Christmas Day attacker was revealed. 5 Adam was heading back on the DLR after going to a special anniversary showing of ABBA Voyage Credit: Getty 5 Adam returned to EastEnders in 2023 after a few years break from the soap Credit: BBC

Best soap affair love triangles LOVE triangles are a fundamental part of soap-land, but which ones have become the most iconic? EASTENDERS Bradley/Stacey/Max: Stacey Slater began an affair with boyfriend Bradley Branning's dad Max in 2007. Despite their romps, Stacey still married Bradley, but their deceit came out in an iconic Christmas Day episode that year. Grant/Sharon/Phil: Heading even further back in Walford history, EastEnders fans were gripped in the 90s as Sharon Watts had a one-night stand with her brother-in-law Phil Mitchell. Sharon confided in best friend Michelle Fowler - not realising it was caught on tape - and her husband Grant eventually found out and played it in front of everyone at the Queen Vic. Syed/Amira/Christian: Syed Masood was engaged to Amira before realising he had feelings for another man, Christian, which he confessed to him on his wedding day. A devout Muslim, Syed refused to admit his true sexuality and went ahead and married Amira anyway, but when they returned, the two men started an affair before being caught in the act by Amira. CORONATION STREET Shelley/Peter/Lucy: Peter Barlow took the concept of a love triangle and ran with it in Coronation Street - extending it to bigamy. He was in a relationship with Shelley Unwin but started dating Lucy Richards, and quickly married her after she fell pregnant with his son, Simon. But it didn't stop him also marrying Shelley, but he was eventually caught when Lucy turned up in Weatherfield and the two women confronted him. Ken/Deidre/Mike: Back in 1982, Deirdre Barlow started sleeping with her husband's nemesis Mike Baldwin in secret, before confessing all a year later. When Mike turned up at the marital home, Deirdre was being throttled by her husband who then kicked her out, but years later they reconciled. Maria/Aidan/Eva: In 2017, Aidan Connor started sleeping with girlfriend Eva Price's best friend, Maria Connor. Eva eventually found out and she decided to take revenge by faking a pregnancy, spending his money and planned to confront him on their wedding day. But she had a change of heart when a remorseful Aidan confessed, and decided to marry him anyway, only for Maria to arrive and expose her fake pregnancy. EMMERDALE Ross/Debbie/Pete: Debbie Dingle found herself torn between two brothers, Ross and Pete Barton in 2015 in Emmerdale. She eventually decided to marry Pete but yet again, a soap wedding day was ruined when the groom learned of his bride's betrayal via a recording played at the wedding. Chrissie/Robert/Aaron: Robert Sugden was married to Chrissie White and all seemed well - until he began a steamy affair with Aaron Dingle. Robert's ex Katie Sugden almost exposed the affair - but fell to her death before she had the chance. However, a guilty Aaron eventually cracked and told Chrissie about the affair - after which she announced it to the whole pub.

From Phil Mitchell's time-travelling murder to audience-dictated love: EastEnders Live capped a wild 40th
The 40th anniversary of EastEnders couldn't have come at a better time. Ratings are in freefall; once the most watched thing on TV, these days the soap is lucky if it cracks the top 20. But an anniversary like this gives EastEnders an opportunity to not only celebrate itself, but to reaffirm its own mission statement. And it has gone about this by going on an absolute tear. With little else to lose, EastEnders has spent the last few weeks wildly swinging for the fences. Don't mistake this for hyperbole, either. Just look at last Thursday's episode where – and I promise I'm not making any of this up – Phil Mitchell embarked on a long monologue about all the different things he's survived (alcoholism, drug addiction, illness, heart attacks, an actual shooting), then travelled back in time and murdered a younger version of himself, before the ghost of his dead mother arrived and urged him to kill himself. It was utterly bizarre, but it was also incredible. Had a big budget streaming show attempted something this daring, it would be lauded to the heavens. But this is old workday EastEnders, and so the whole thing passed without comment. Still, this impeccable form meant that EastEnders went into Thursday full of confidence. And it needed it, because this was the big anniversary live episode. In the past, live episodes of EastEnders have been marked by a pleasing shonkiness, with actors forgetting lines, or visibly twitching when they're supposed to be dead, or calling Ian Beale by his actor's name and then looking more terrified than any human in all of history. Still, even by previous standards, this episode had an awful lot of ground to cover. The Vic had been destroyed (again), trapping a number of characters, one of whom was in labour. But also to clear up was the aftermath of a six-week whodunnit about Cindy Beale's attempted murder to deal with (she had already died once before; but forget it: it's Walford). Plus, there was the continuing saga of Phil Mitchell's efforts to kill himself and a brand new Bandersnatchesque twist where viewers got to decide which hunk Denise Fox should end up with. All said, it was shaping up to be spectacular. But then came the reality. There was no Cindy in the live episode and, aside from one very brief shot at the end, no Phil either. Anyone expecting any more time-travelling homicides will have come away bitterly disappointed. The Denise storyline was something of a damp squib, too. After a weirdly breezy pep talk from Linda Carter (who was somehow able to brush off the fact that the pub she used to work in had just exploded, at the exact same time that she watched Phil Mitchell attempt to shoot himself in the head), she knocked on the door of the hunk she had the least sexual chemistry with, and that was that. Sonia's birth was also dealt with in a strangely businesslike manner, save for the fact that she named her baby Julia, after the show's co-creator Julia Smith. Instead, the bulk of the episode was devoted to a number of romantic exchanges between Martin Fowler (trapped under a girder) and Stacey Slater (much less trapped under a girder). The reason for this quickly became apparent; a paramedic stated that Martin would probably die once the girder was lifted. Spoiler – he did. It was all very sad but, for those of you keeping score, live EastEnders episodes are now officially a very bad time to be Stacey Slater's romantic interest. Her boyfriend Bradley Branning died on the 25th anniversary, and now Martin's gone too. Just as a piece of practical advice, whoever ends up with Stacey next should probably give serious consideration to booking a nice long holiday for the duration of February 2035. Better to be safe than sorry, after all. Storylines aside, though, the main takeaway of the episode was how extraordinarily proficient it all was. The performances and execution were flawless. Not a single thing went wrong. It is the first time that EastEnders has properly nailed a live episode. So while it might not have been particularly memorable, from a technical standpoint this was a clear demonstration that EastEnders knows exactly what it's doing. The hope must have been that this experiment would put more eyeballs on EastEnders. Regardless of what happened in the episode itself, you'd have to hope that it works. It might no longer be the ratings behemoth it once was, but this was proof that EastEnders still has an awful lot to be proud of. EastEnders Live aired on BBC One and is available on iPlayer.
