A driver jumped out of a vehicle and started shouting aggressively at a couple, after he rear-ended their car at a red light, a court heard.
Igor Rusu (49) was driving his friend's car and bringing him to hospital when the accident occurred.
He was highly intoxicated, his lawyer said, but he refused to provide a blood sample to gardaí.
Judge McHugh disqualified Rusu from driving for four years and ordered him to complete 100 hours community service in lieu of three months in prison
Judge David McHugh said this was an appalling episode, and he could only imagine it must have been traumatic for the couple in the other vehicle.
Judge McHugh disqualified Rusu from driving for four years and ordered him to complete 100 hours community service in lieu of three months in prison.
The defendant, with an address at Laverna Avenue in Castleknock, admitted failing to provide a blood sample to gardaí, as well as failing to produce his insurance or driving licence to gardaí.
Sergeant Maria Callaghan told Blanchardstown District Court gardaí were flagged down by a motorist on the Old Lucan Road in Palmerston shortly after 8pm on February 15, 2023.
Sgt Callaghan said the driver, a passenger in the car, said his wife had been stopped at a red light when they were rear-ended by a grey Honda Civic. Sgt Callaghan said the Honda driver got out of the car and started shouting aggressively at the couple, before trying to abscond.
When the gardaí saw Rusu, he was slurring his words and unsteady on his feet, and he also became aggressive towards gardaí. The court heard he had no previous convictions.
