Handball players from eMzinoni represent SA in Zimbabwe
Lusanda Dhlamini and Lusanda Zulu, two talented handball players from eMzinoni, were selected to represent SA at the Handball Championship in Zimbabwe from April 27 to May 3.
Both players are members of the Sukuyende Handball Club in Bethal and learners at Ikhethelo Secondary School. Their coach, Iggy Masuku, said he and Chester Yende, both employed as prison warders at the Bethal Correctional Services, recruited learners from various schools in eMzinoni after receiving a call from Handball South Africa for provincial selections for U17 and U20 female players.
'Although we were working on short notice, Ikhethelo Secondary School allowed us to select and train two teams. We had just six days to introduce and teach the learners handball, a completely new sport to them,' said Masuku.
The newly formed teams travelled to Ermelo for the provincial selections on February 16, where they and some Ermelo and Nelspruit players were chosen to represent Mpumalanga at the National Championships held in Rustenburg from February 21 to 23.
'With the support of the Mpumalanga Department of Arts, Sports and Recreation, we made the trip to Rustenburg, where our team competed against other provinces. That's where Lusanda Dhlamini and Lusanda Zulu were selected to join the SA national team,' Masuku added.
He said the Sukuyende Handball Club is open to young people interested in learning and playing the sport.
The two players going to Zimbabwe needed financial help, handball kits and other essentials. He asked local businesses and community members to lend their support. Anyone interested in assisting can call Masuku on 076 265 6811 or Yende on 076 593 7739.
