Il Divo "excited" ahead of show at Llangollen Eisteddfod

The global classical-crossover sensation will take to the stage in Llangollen on July 11. Since their formation in 2003 under the vision of Simon Cowell, Il Divo has enchanted global audiences with their masterful fusion of classical technique and contemporary repertoire. Comprising four exceptional voices – Swiss tenor Urs Bühler, Spanish baritone Carlos Marín (who passed away in 2021), American tenor David Miller, and French pop artist Sébastien Izambard – they embody musical sophistication, charm, and international flair. The group is set to go on a worldwide tour, starting in June, which will take them across the globe until March 2026. Ahead of their performance at the eisteddfod later this summer, Urs and David spoke to the Leader about what's to come. Urs said: 'We have never performed in North Wales. The only place we've performed in Wales was in Cardiff, and there for the last 20 years, but never in North Wales. We're very excited and curious, it's a part of the UK where I have never even been to, so very excited about that. "We've had about five months off which is great as it allows you to live a normal life and feel like a normal person every now and then. "That makes you really excited to go out again and I always count myself very fortunate that after 20 years I can still travel the world for work and discover new places I've never been to. "It's wonderful to have that chance to go out again. We've taken a breathe and we're ready to take on the world again." David added: 'It's wonderful, none of us being from the UK, but being a UK band has really created this unusual sense of being adopted by the UK. "We've played many places but when we play a new place it's always very special for us, we're looking forward to it, very curious as to how it's going to be especially to have the opportunity and honour to perform in a historic occasion is very special to us." Read more When asked what the eisteddfod audience can expect from Il Divo, Urs explained: 'Some people expect a classical concert, which this is not, we've always been singing pop songs. "It is classical crossover, so it's kind of its own thing. It's not a pop concert, where a band just gets up and plays whatever. I like to compare it to a recital. "Our repertoire goes all the way across the pop music, we intend to move the audience. We intend to create emotion, passion, romance, heart, love and that's what we want to transmit and you get an evening of that and hopefully everyone walks out with a big smile."

Meet the four members of Il Divo, Simon Cowell's classical crossover group

It's been more than 20 years since Simon Cowell brought together the voices of Il Divo. Back in 2003, Cowell's Syco Music team scoured the globe to find the perfect blend for a crossover classical boy band and discovered David Miller from California, Sébastien Izambard from France, Swiss singer Urs Bühler and Spain's Carlos Marín. A starry night on tour for the stars of Il Divo. 'The whole thing in 2004 was just an experiment,' David Miller told The Standard. 'Simon wanted to find a way to blend classical voices with his favourite music – pop – and songs that he loved.' Now, more than two decades later, Il Divo are a multiplatinum act and a staple of the classical crossover genre. Down the years, Il Divo have packed venues across the globe, enjoying stand-out moments such as their performances with Toni Braxton at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Curious about the men behind Il Divo? Here's everything we know about them. Urs Bühler Swiss-born Urs Bühler initially pursued heavy metal before making the switch to classical music. Photo: @ildivo/Instagram Urs Toni Bühler, 53, was born in Lucerne, Switzerland. His musical journey began when he mastered several instruments, from the violin to the drums, then explored heavy metal with the band Conspiracy. But fate had other plans and in 2003 he found his true calling with Il Divo, per UK Music Reviews. 'I think that came purely because classical is what my voice is really best suited for,' he told the outlet. When he's not performing with Il Divo, the tenor spends time with his family. He married Leticia Martín Crespo in 2016 and has a daughter, Wilhelmina (nicknamed Billie), with a former partner.
