15-year-old suspect in Rockford murder in custody, two of three other suspects released pretrial

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A 15-year-old wanted for an E. State Street murder has been taken into custody, while two of the three other men charged with the crime are out on pretrial release. According to Rockford Police, Chase Higgins, 27, was shot multiple times after a fight ensued at an after-hours event in the 6600 block of E. State Street on Saturday, August 24th, 2024. Detectives from Rockford Police's Gang Unit identified four suspects in the crime. Enrique Dozal, 21, Aarionte Mahone, 27, and Jason Bryant, 29, were arrested in late March and charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery. Police announced the arrest of the 15-year-old offender on the same charges on Wednesday, April 9th. However, court records show Dozal and Mahone were granted pretrial release under the Illinois Pretrial Fairness Act. Dozal is due in court on May 6th. Mahone's next court appearance is on May 21st. Parents charged in 16-year-old's overdose death in Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The parents of a 16-year-old Rockford teen have been charged with his overdose death. According to the Rockford Police Department, Chad Chavez, 45, and Ana Benavides, 44, face charges of Endangering the Life of a Child Resulting in Death. On December 14th, 2024, police officers were called to a home in the 1400 block of 4th Avenue for reports that a 16-year-old boy had overdosed on drugs. He was taken to a local hospital where he died, police said. After an investigation into the circumstances of the teen's death, the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office authorized charges against Chavez and Benavides, who were arrested on Friday, March 21st, 2025. Benavides was released from custody in accordance with the Illinois Pretrial Fairness Act and will return to court in May. Chavez is still in custody on an out-of-county hold. 66-year-old woman arrested for DUI after fatal crash in Freeport

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — A 66-year-old Freeport woman has been indicted for driving under the influence of drugs in a fatal crash that killed a motorcyclist in 2024. According to the Freeport Police Department, Sheila Anderson faces one count of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Drugs Resulting in the Death of Another as the outcome of a traffic incident that occurred on August 23rd, 2024. Police said around 1:58 p.m., Anderson was driving a 2007 Dodge Nitro while under the influence of cocaine, resulting in a crash at Adams Avenue and Spring Street that killed a motorcyclist. She was arrested and served a copy of the Grand Jury indictment at the Freeport Police Department and then released according to provisions in the Illinois Pretrial Fairness Act, awaiting trial.
