Airdrie group Point5 Theatre wows hometown audiences with debut play
An Airdrie theatre group came up smelling of roses during their dynamic debut play. Cormac Myles, Alex Burns, Harry Reid and Scott Taylor of Point5 Theatre wowed audiences at Airdrie Arts Centre with The Ballad of Sonia The Skunk . As previously reported by Lanarkshire Live, the quartet of friends run a company creating social and community-focused work and have deliberately lowered ticket prices for their first official production to 'the level of class and funding we see every day'. Responding to the play's success, Cormac, artistic lead and writer of The Ballad of Sonia The Skunk , told Lanarkshire Live : "We were really pleased with how people responded to the show. "We had some excellent, five-star reviews come in from audiences and our production ended up completely selling out just before we opened, with more than 120 tickets sold in just one weekend. "Some of the audience feedback included - ' The Ballad of Sonia The Skunk is an absolutely bonkers debut play for Point5 Theatre. Keep an eye on these guys' and 'the passion and love of the work shone through tonight'. "We couldn't be more happy with how it went and are currently planning to hopefully bring some more work to Airdrie later this year; if not then, then early next year." Cormac, Alex, Harry and Scott met when they were 13 or 14 and attended a youth theatre group at Airdrie Arts Centre. Point5 Theatre was founded in July last year and the fabulous four were keen to stage their debut play in a venue they knew well. Cormac said: 'We approached Imagine That arts school founder Kieran McMath to say we wanted to hold the play in Airdrie Arts Centre and he gave us the space, lighting and rehearsal room for free. 'This was a wonderful gesture and the arts centre was the perfect place to stage The Ballad of Sonia The Skunk as it's right in the heart of Airdrie.' 'River City' and 'Outlander' star Grant Stott joins cast of Imagine That's 'Sunshine on Leith' production
Sixty-eight of the group's senior musical theatre students will take to the stage at Airdrie's Cairnlea Parish Church for six performances from June 3-7. A famous face from Scottish television has joined the cast for a Monklands performing arts school's next special production - marking its 50th show. Grant Stott, of Outlander, River City and Take the High Road fame, will feature in a pre-recorded cameo role in Imagine That's take on hit musical Sunshine on Leith. Sixty-eight of the group's senior musical theatre students will take to the stage at Airdrie's Cairnlea Parish Church for six performances from June 3-7. Set to fantastic songs from world-renowned Scottish band The Proclaimers, Sunshine on Leith is a funny and moving musical about Davy and Ally, two Edinburgh natives returning to their hometown after serving in war-torn countries overseas, who are questioning what 'home' really means. Families, friendships and life are not all plain sailing in this funny and moving story about love and life. An Imagine That spokesman told Lanarkshire Live: "We are delighted to have Grant Stott joining our cast for our upcoming production of Sunshine on Leith in a small pre-recorded cameo role as the Commentator. "Not only is he a DJ on BBC Radio Scotland, Grant has been appearing in River City since 2021 in the role of Sam Spiller. "Grant is also a member of Scottish pantomime royalty, having performed in 30 pantos since 1993, and in recent years has played the villain, donning the tagline 'Mon the Hibs'. "The musical features a fantastic soundtrack of beloved Proclaimers songs, weaving them into a heartwarming and often hilarious tale of family, love, and finding your way in the world. "This production will mark our 50th production since our beginning in 2014 and we cannot wait for the performances." Imagine That helps students "reach their full potential, learning and developing transferable skills". It bridges the gap between drama clubs and performing arts education with a range of classes and the opportunities offered ensuring "that all students' needs are catered for, whether you are just looking for a new hobby or if you want to pursue a career in the arts". Performances of Sunshine on Leith take place at 7.30pm on June 3-7 with a 2.30pm show also being held on June 7; tickets are only still available for the June 4 and 5 and June 7 at 7.30pm productions and can be purchased online.
