All good things must come to an end: Marc Maron announces WTF podcast conclusion after 16 years
Marc Maron's podcast, WTF With Marc Maron, considered to be a trailblazer and one of the early shows to popularize the format, is set to end this fall after more than 15 years and nearly 2,000 episodes since its 2009 debut. The podcast, which has been a major influence in the audio series boom, announced its conclusion in a recent episode. Since launching on September 1, 2009, WTF has amassed around 1.1 billion downloads, listens, and impressions. The show has produced 1,645 main episodes alongside over 300 bonus episodes for premium subscribers. Maron reflected on the decision during the latest episode, stating, 'Sixteen years we've been doing this, and we've decided that we had a great run. Now, basically, it's time, folks. It's time.' The podcast is renowned for its candid conversations with comedy legends, A-list actors, and political figures, including an iconic 2015 interview with President Barack Obama. That particular episode, recorded in Maron's garage in Highland Park, California, shattered Libsyn's 24-hour download record by more than double, featuring discussions on race relations, gun violence, and political humor. Other memorable episodes include comedian Todd Glass's 2012 coming out and a 2010 interview with Robin Williams, which was preserved by the Library of Congress in 2022. Maron's guest list reads like a who's who of entertainment, featuring names such as Sir Paul McCartney, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and SNL creator Lorne Michaels. Maron and his producer Brendan McDonald received the inaugural Governors Award for Excellence in Audio from the Podcast Academy at The Ambies in 2021. Maron cited exhaustion after nearly two decades of biweekly episodes as a key reason for ending the podcast. 'We're tired. We're burnt out. And we are utterly satisfied with the work we've done,' he said. He emphasized that ending WTF on their own terms is important, acknowledging the support of partners like Acast over the past three years. Looking ahead, Maron plans to feature new guests before the final episodes air in the fall. He also has several projects underway, including a new HBO stand-up special this summer, roles in upcoming films such as In Memoriam and Deliver Me From Nowhere, and a starring part in Apple's golf comedy series Stick. Maron thanked his listeners and guests, reflecting on the podcast's profound impact on his life and career. 'It's been an incredible time... There's probably going to be some ups and downs over the next few months... but this is a full-hearted decision. It's the right decision,' he concluded. Maron is represented by Independent Artists Group, Avalon, and Brecheen Feldman Breimer. The final episodes of WTF are expected this fall. Full details and the latest episode are available at

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darren Calabrese TORONTO — Kiefer Sutherland will pay tribute to his late father, Canadian acting icon Donald Sutherland, at this year's Canadian Screen Awards. Frick says Kiefer will deliver a 'really heartfelt moment' at the Screen Awards that she believes will be a highlight of the annual bash. The Screen Awards celebrate the best in Canadian film, television and digital sectors and are set to stream live on CBC Gem on June 1. Why Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright weren't in Bafta TV Awards tribute as fans blast 'shameful' omission
Bafta viewers were left baffled after Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Joan Plowright were left out of the In Memoriam tribute. The star-studded Bafta TV Awards were held at the Royal Festival Hall in London's South Bank Centre on Sunday and an edited version was later shown on BBC One, hosted by actor Alan Cumming. Harry Potter and Downton Abbey actress Smith died aged 89 last September and Enchanted April star Plowright passed away aged 95 in January. The In Memorian section, which pays tribute to prominent actors, presenters and other esteemed figures who have died in the past year, failed to mention the two beloved stars in their list. Famous faces like TV doctor Michael Moseley, EastEnders star Roberta Taylor, Going for Gold host Henry Kelly, Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne, and Dr Kildare actor Richard Chamberlain were honoured in the emotional segment, set to a performance by French violinist Esther Abrami to the song Apple Tree. Coronation Street actor Timothy West and Man About the House star Brian Murphy were also commemorated in the section. The reason Smith and Plowright were excluded from the list was because they had received special tributes at the Bafta Film Awards' In Memorian segment in February. Actors who are best known for television are usually honoured at the TV Awards, while stars who are more aligned with film are celebrated at the Film Awards. Viewers at home were confused by the omission nonetheless, with one raging on X: 'No Maggie Smith?? Feels like quite an oversight.' Another added 'They left out Dame Maggie Smith from the list of those who died during the last year. DISGUSTING. SHAME on you.' 'Bafta TV Awards snubbed Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright, even if they are know mostly for film/theatre,' a third posted. Viewers also got to see their favourite shows pick up accolades during the awards ceremony. The Bafta for limited drama was awarded to ITV's Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, which has renewed public attention on the subpostmasters who fought to clear their names in the wake of the Horizon scandal. The best supporting actor prize went to Ariyon Bakare for the BBC LGBT+ drama Mr Loverman, based on the Bernardine Evaristo novel of the same name. In the comedy performance categories former EastEnders star Danny Dyer won for Sky's Mr Bigstuff, with Welsh actress Ruth Jones winning for her role playing Vanessa Shanessa 'Nessa' Jenkins in the Gavin And Stacey finale.

BAFTA TV Awards leaves viewers 'disgusted and outraged' as legendary star is snubbed from In Memoriam tributes - but all isn't as it seems
BAFTA TV Awards left viewers 'disgusted and outraged' after a legendary star was snubbed from In Memoriam tributes on Sunday evening. Actress Dame Maggie Smith, who is best known for roles in the likes of Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, passed away aged 89 on September 27 2024. During the prestigious television awards, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday, a number of much-loved stars were paid tribute to. Michael Moseley, The Bill's Roberta Taylor, Drag Race UK star The Vivienne and American actor Richard Chamberlain were among those who were included. Broadcaster Henry Kelly, Coronation Street 's Timothy West and Brian Murphy were also spoken about. However Maggie wasn't included. Many of those watching at home to take to X, formerly known as Twitter, to point it out and share their upset. One said on the social media platform: '@BAFTA - unless I missed it, Dame Maggie Smith not on your list of those departed in tonight's award show. I'd say she was a lot more worthy of mention than some of those also-rans.' '#BAFTAS no mention of Dame Maggie Smith when remembering those who died in the last year. Shame on BAFTA.' 'Where was Dame Maggie Smith's acknowledgement in roll of honour?' '@BBCOne @BAFTA ….. where was Dame Maggie Smith in the remembrance section? Dame Maggie Smith how on earth could the BBC miss that one shameful.' '@BAFTA why no mention of Dame Maggie Smith in tonight's memoriam section???' Another pointed out: 'Bafta TV Awards Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright, snubbed Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright, even if they are know mostly for film/theatre. 'They did a lot of TV, especially in the early days when they did plays on TV and period dramas especially Shakespeare. 'Maggie Smith was in iconic Downton Abbey. Plowright has a Golden Globe and Emmy for TV!' However it has been highlighted that late Maggie and Joan were paid tribute to at the Bafta Film Awards in Memoriam in February. Back in September, Larkin and Stephens, Maggie's sons from her first marriage, said in their statement: 'It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. 'An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. 'We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days. 'We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.' Among the first to pay tribute was her friend Gyles Brandreth, who said: 'The saddest news: the death of Dame Maggie Smith marks the end of a golden era and a quite extraordinary life. 'She was a truly great actress, 'one of the greats' and simply the best company: wise, witty, waspish, wonderful. One of a kind in every way and consequently irreplaceable.' British theatre owner and producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh told the PA news agency: 'It is with enormous sadness that today, British theatre has lost one of its greatest stars - the incomparable Dame Maggie Smith. 'Many of Maggie's finest performances have been on the stages of theatres now in my care - one of the dress circle boxes in the Sondheim Theatre is proudly named after her. 'Over the decades, I have been privileged to see many of her unforgettable performances from her early days in revue, in the late-50s. 'Whatever she was in, every line was electric - she was the master of the zinger. 'I, and everyone at Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, salute a truly great artist. Maggie was a brilliant original who can never be replaced or ever forgotten.' 2025 BAFTA TV AWARD WINNERS AT A GLANCE Drama Series - Blue Lights (BBC One) Limited Drama - Mr Bates vs the Post Office (ITV1) International - Shogun (Disney+) - WINNER Scripted Comedy - Alma's Not Normal (BBC Two) Entertainment - Would I Lie To You?
