Josh Anderson is the Canadiens' Masterton Selection

I love the Masterton Trophy and as a member of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, that's our Trophy. We vote on many others but that's the one and we have tried to emphasize it over the years. Josh Anderson has had a lot of ups and downs, injuries and yet, he's still out there playing the game he loves. Anderson has had a good season. He's given the Canadiens' a little bit of everything. His 15 goals is a surprise for me. After the nine he posted last season, I wasn't sure if he could bounce back. But he has and he will be a valuable player going forward and he does have playoff experience. 43 games of it, and that will matter as a good voice in the room. Anderson gets 25% defensive zone starts and averages 1:47 on their penalty kill according to InStat. That's very valuable. Here's the valuable statistic going forward. He's winning 56% of his puck battles. He averages 1.38 hits per game. That's a lot. Players like Anderson make the job of some of the other players much easier and that's a role he plays well when healthy. I will get to vote on this award and will consider Anderson. There are too many worthy candidates every season. Players have told me they appreciate this award because of what it signifies. It's nice to get that feedback because these guys put it all out there every night, every shift, and that's admirable.

Logan Mailloux Is Getting Closer To The NHL

Logan Mailloux was drafted by the Canadiens in 2021. He was taken 31st overall because no other team would draft him in that position based on his off-ice issues that were well-documented. That didn't mean he couldn't play hockey, because he can and he is developing in Laval. Last year, Mailloux had 13 goals and 47 points. Those are gaudy numbers for a defenseman in the AHL. According to InStat, he's averaging 2:24 on the power play, and 1:37 on the penalty kill. Those are both good signs. Mailloux is averaging 4.3 shots per game. When he gets to the next level that will drop. There's only so many touches that you can get and he's not going to be on top pairing. His 5-on-5 offender id going to be a key going forward. The fact that he's winning puck battles at a rate of 54% is encouraging for the Canadiens. The offense was always going to be there but this part of his game and one other had to improve. His defensive zone starts are now at 23%. That's big. He's handling his own end. Winning puck battles and he's keeping his PIMS in check. This year is going to be a big reason why he's rounding out his game for the next step. Mailloux has gotten eight games so far with Montreal and next year he will battle for a job at the age of 22.
