Girls' lacrosse Top 10: Potomac School rises after VISAA title

During the first week of practice back in February, Potomac School girls' lacrosse coach Claire Berg had her players write down their goals for the season. Some had personal goals they wanted to accomplish, others focused on team objectives. One goal that showed up often was 'win a championship,' and the Panthers earned two opportunities to do that this spring. They came up short in their first shot at a title, falling to Stone Ridge in the Independent School League semifinals. But they got a second chance on Monday afternoon in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I final. Facing St. Anne's Belfield in Charlottesville, the Panthers battled back from a late four-goal deficit to win their first Division I title, 9-8, in double overtime. 'The girls were so elated,' Berg said. 'Once we broke through and got a couple of goals, our confidence started to return and momentum came back on our side. Overall, just a really thrilling win for our girls.' Heading into the fourth quarter, the Panthers trailed, 7-3. But they scored five unanswered goals to take a one-goal lead with just over three minutes to go. St. Anne's Belfield would tie the game shortly after, forcing overtime. In the first extra period, Potomac School goalie Caitlin Jarvis made two important saves to shut down a St. Anne's possession that lasted almost three minutes. When the Panthers won the draw control at the start of the second overtime, senior Stella Pence got her hands free and found the back of the net to clinch the title. 'They just never gave up,' Berg said. 'They never quit…We're not afraid of overtime. Glad we've been in an overtime game before. We had that experience to kind of settle in a little bit and play for each other and make the next play. That's an all-out team win.' All records through Monday. The Falcons capped their season with their fourth straight WCAC title. Over the past two seasons, Good Counsel is 39-3. Sidwell Friends wins first lacrosse title in 17 years; South Lakes runs into postseason

After Sidwell Friends senior Avery Coleman scored in the final minute of the Independent School League A division championship game on Saturday, she was immediately swarmed by a pack of teammates. They could feel the title at their fingertips. Coleman found the back of the net with 15.7 seconds left to put the Quakers up, 9-8, over Bullis. It was her 110th goal of the season and the 324th of her high school career.

After a stellar start, Stone Ridge surges to a third straight ISL lacrosse title

Well before the start of the Independent School League AA lacrosse final, Stone Ridge knew it needed to dominate the first five minutes of the game. In the team's two conference losses during the regular season, senior attacker Sophie Stoltz said the group didn't come out with the necessary intensity or energy. That had to change on Saturday if the Gators were going to secure a three-peat.

Girls' basketball Top 20: Bishop McNamara goes wire-to-wire at No. 1

As Osbourn Park cascaded to the Siegel Center floor at VCU Saturday to celebrate the team's first-ever state title win, the Yellow Jackets brought a triumphant end to the girls' basketball season. Coach Chrissy Kelly's team, a group loaded with Division I talent that had yet to get over the hump in Virginia's Class 6, finally reached the mountaintop to conclude a dominant season. With the win, the Yellow Jackets surge into the top five of The Washington Post's final girls' basketball rankings of the season. Led by standout junior Key Rainey, the Yellow Jackets finished as the top public program in the area. With the season officially over, the local hierarchy is now clear. No. 1 Bishop McNamara, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champion, never strayed from its perch. The top four teams in the preseason Top 20 remain the same — Sidwell Friends finishes as the No. 2 program following Independent School League and D.C. State Athletic Association victories, while Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association champion Bishop Ireton and ISL runner-up Bullis round out the top four. In Maryland, North Point and South River each take a leap up the rankings following their state championship wins. The Eagles bulldozed their way through the playoffs and routed Western for the Maryland 4A crown, while South River made a late surge to down No. 20 Oakland Mills for their first 3A title since 1986. The night before Osbourn Park's Virginia Class 6 victory, No. 17 Heritage claimed an improbable Class 4 title in Coach Tayler Cook's first year with the program. Eight public school teams finish in the final Top 20 of the year, with Oakland Mills jumping into the fold after reaching the Maryland 3A title game for the first time since 1998. The Mustangs went wire-to-wire as the top-ranked team in the area this season, claiming the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship over Bishop Ireton.
