EAM Jaishankar extends warm greetings to Italy on its National Day, reaffirms strong strategic partnership
New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar extended warm greetings to his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani, and to the Government and people of Italy, on the occasion of their National Day. Taking to social media platform X, Jaishankar posted, 'Warm greetings to FM @Antonio_Tajani, the Government and people of Italy on their National Day.' He further affirmed, 'Will build on the strong momentum of our strategic partnership.' India-Italy bilateral relations, which have seen high-level exchanges and deepening cooperation across diverse sectors in recent months. Earlier this year, Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The two leaders discussed India's measured response to cross-border terrorism. 'Had a telecon with DPM & FM @Antonio_Tajani of Italy. Discussed India's targeted and measured response to firmly counter terrorism. Any escalation will see a strong response,' Jaishankar had shared in a post on X. In a previous in-person engagement in Italy, Jaishankar met with FM Tajani and Italian Minister for University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini. The leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation, including trade, investment, maritime security, research, technology, education, and cultural exchange. They also exchanged views on contemporary global developments in Europe, the Mediterranean, and West Asia, and reaffirmed their commitment to the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029--guiding the future trajectory of the India-Italy partnership. Jaishankar also underscored that the India-Italy partnership is 'rooted in our democratic values, respect for civilizations, culture and heritage.' India and Italy enjoy a robust strategic partnership marked by growing collaboration in key areas such as defence, energy transition, education, and people-to-people exchanges. (ANI)

All-party delegation in Italy underscores India's firm stance on terrorism
An all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar has met senior Italian officials to reaffirm India's "zero-tolerance" stance on terrorism and New Delhi's resolve to combat all forms of terror. The eight-member team is one of the seven multi-party delegations India has tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community on Pakistan's designs and India's response to terror. The group, which arrived in Rome on Tuesday, had a "productive" meeting with former foreign minister Giulio Terzi on Wednesday. "Led by Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, the All-Party Indian Parliamentary Delegation, had a productive meeting with Senator @GiulioTerzi, President of the India-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group and its Members," the Indian embassy in Rome said in a post on X. "The Indian delegation voiced India's resolute stance on combating terrorism and zero tolerance to all forms of terror," it said. Both sides also reaffirmed the significance of India-Italy strategic partnership and the potential for elevating bilateral cooperation. The delegation also held an interaction with Italy's Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Maria Tripodi. "Constructive exchange with the Indian parliamentary delegation visiting the @SenatoStampa. Italy and India united by strategic partnership, work together to address the common challenges of our time," Tripodi said in an X post. "She reiterated commitment for the India-Italy strategic partnership and for countering terrorism," the embassy said. The group also met the Committee on Foreign Affairs and European Commission and its president, Senator Giulio Tremonti. "The Indian side highlighted India's unwavering commitment to combat terrorism and the national consensus on zero tolerance against terrorism," the embassy said in a separate post, adding that Tremonti "appreciated" the outreach and spoke about the "shared positions on terrorism". "He underscored the need for a regular dialogue about terrorism," it added. The delegation also interacted with a cross-section of the Indian community here and shared the national resolve to "counter-terrorism and take firm actions against cross-border terrorism," the embassy said. "We also expressed our appreciation for the valuable contributions of the Indian diaspora and their deep-rooted connections to their homeland," Prasad said in a post on X. In separate meetings, the delegation also engaged with Italian news agencies, journalists and major think tanks and strategic experts, briefing them about India's stance on cross-border terrorism, Operation Sindoor, as well as New Delhi's "new normal of a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism", and its resolve to combat all forms of terrorism. This delegation visited France before arriving in Italy. It will also travel to Denmark, Germany, the UK, and the European Union in Brussels. About two weeks after the horrific April 22 Pahalgam attack, in which 26 civilians were killed, India carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7 under Operation Sindoor, following which Pakistan attempted to attack the Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions.

India's right to self-defence backed globally: S Jaishankar in Italy
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday (May 28) said that India gave a 'firm, resolute and measured' reply to the Pahalgam terror attack by targeting and destroying terror camps and launchpads. He added that India's right to protect its people from terrorism has been acknowledged globally. Speaking at an event held at the Italian Embassy in New Delhi to celebrate Italy's National Day, Jaishankar thanked the Italian government for standing with India after the "barbaric" terror incident on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. 'We are thankful for Italy's solidarity and support to India following the barbaric terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. India gave a firm and resolute and measured response by destroying the relevant terror centres and launchpads,' he said. Operation Sindoor and global support Under Operation Sindoor, Indian forces carried out targeted strikes and destroyed nine terror facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam killings on May 7. Jaishankar said, 'India's right to defend its people against acts of terror has also been recognised by countries across the world. We believe that the world will have zero tolerance for terrorism and cross-border terrorism.' Strengthening India-Italy ties The minister highlighted that relations between India and Italy are steadily improving. 'India-Italy relations are undoubtedly on an upward trajectory,' he said. He noted that the strategic partnership between the two nations is built on shared values and mutual interests, which are reflected in their cooperation in platforms such as the G20 and G7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni have also met regularly during these global meetings. Collaboration in global initiatives Jaishankar added that India and Italy are working together on several international initiatives. These include the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, Global Biofuels Alliance, Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, International Solar Alliance, and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. 'Our bilateral relations have intensified after adoption of the Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025-29, by our Prime Ministers last November. We are hopeful that the roadmap provided in the JSAP will result in concrete and practical outcomes for our societies and peoples,' he added. Trade and diaspora ties The minister said that trade and economic collaboration play a key role in the India-Italy relationship. He also acknowledged the significant presence of the Indian community in Italy, describing it as one of the largest Indian diasporas in Europe, who are respected for their contributions across various sectors. Highlighting common interests in maritime security, Jaishankar said, 'Either in the Indo-Pacific or Indo-Mediterranean, as peninsular nations, India and Italy share maritime interests and a commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation and shipping. Italy's greater presence in the Indo-Pacific Region as well as its undertaking activities surely boost our cooperation further.' He concluded by reaffirming India's dedication to deepening the strategic partnership with Italy. 'There is a new momentum of political dialogue, of visits, of interest in each other's potentials, which I am confident will be tapped by stakeholders,' he said.
