India's KRBL posts higher quarterly profit on international demand
(Reuters) -Basmati rice producer KRBL on Friday reported a rise in fourth-quarter profit, helped by the strong overseas demand for its rice products. KRBL, known for its 'India Gate' brand of basmati rice, reported consolidated net profit of 1.54 billion rupees ($18 million) in the fourth quarter, up 35% from a year ago. India had eased almost all curbs on non-basmati and basmati rice exports late last year to reduce surging inventories and regain market share. The government had also removed minimum export price for basmati rice to help thousands of farmers who complained about a lack of access to lucrative overseas markets such as Europe, the Middle East and the U.S. The move boosted export volumes as Indian basmati rice is now more competitively priced in global markets. The company's export revenue grew 45% in the fourth quarter. Increasing export revenue will partly contribute to margin improvement next year, it said. KRBL's agricultural segment, which includes India Gate basmati rice brand and non-basmati rice, saw a 10% rise in quarterly revenue. The segment accounted for nearly the company's entire revenue during the quarter. Delhi Observes 15-Minute Power Blackout In Emergency Preparedness Drill
New Delhi: In an unprecedented sight on Wednesday evening, a 15-minute power blackout was observed in many areas of the national capital, including entire Lutyens' Delhi. The exercise left the New Delhi area housing Parliament, India Gate, embassies and key administrative buildings dark as part of a nationwide civil defence mock drill. The blackout, which took place from 8 pm to 8.15 pm, was carried out by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to simulate emergency wartime conditions. The move, officials said, was part of 'Operation Abhyaas', a mega mock drill initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in response to rising tensions with Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. "All residents are requested to cooperate and bear with the situation," an NDMC official said, adding that while government offices and diplomatic enclaves participated in the exercise, hospitals, metro stations, Rashtrapati Bhavan and the PMO were excluded from the power cut. Several iconic markets and public spaces - Connaught Place, Khan Market and Town Hall in Chandni Chowk - went dark, briefly halting activity in areas usually lit up late into the night. The visual impact was stark, drawing the attention of residents and tourists alike. Officials in Central Delhi confirmed that blackouts were executed at five major locations, including Wazirabad, Chandni Chowk and the Civic Centre. Parts of Karol Bagh and Prasad Nagar also participated in the drill. In North West Delhi, officials said blackouts occurred at five identified spots, with a clear directive to avoid disruption to emergency services. According to officials, in southeast Delhi, the blackout was also observed at a government school in Madan Kahadar and DLF King's Court apartments in Greater Kailash. East Delhi authorities noted that due to rainfall and the presence of essential service providers, a complete blackout was not feasible. However, selected areas did take part to ensure symbolic participation in the nationwide exercise. Earlier in the day, mock security drills were carried out by authorities at 55 locations in the national capital. Though brief, the power cut in Delhi served as a reminder of the capital's readiness to respond to high-risk scenarios. Indian rice seller KRBL's quarterly profit drops on higher expenses
Feb 6 (Reuters) - India's KRBL ( opens new tab reported its sixth straight quarterly profit fall on Thursday as a rise in expenses more than offset the impact of strong sales of its rice products. KRBL, which makes the 'India Gate' brand of basmati rice, reported a 1% year-on-year fall in consolidated net profit to 1.33 billion rupees ($15.2 million) in the third quarter. This was KRBL's slowest profit drop in six quarters. The company's revenue from operations rose 17% to 16.82 billion rupees, led by a 17% jump in its agricultural business, which includes all types of rice apart from seed and bran. Revenue from exports more than doubled to 5.63 billion rupees. Total expenses also rose by 17%. India eased almost all curbs on non-basmati and basmati rice exports late last year as part of its efforts to reduce surging inventories and to regain market share. India accounts for around 75% of global basmati production. The government also removed the so-called floor price, or minimum export price, for basmati rice to help thousands of farmers who complained about a lack of access to lucrative overseas markets such as Europe, the Middle East and the U.S. Basmati is not widely consumed in India, and the government does not buy the variety to build state reserves, leading to producers exporting a majority of their stock. Rival LT Foods ( opens new tab reported a lower quarterly profit on higher costs. ($1 = 87.5560 Indian rupees)
