Demand for restructuring of SSLC exam

CBSE ICSE Internal assessment marks A growing chorus of students and parents is urging the Karnataka government to urgently restructure the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination system, aligning it with Central Board patterns such as Central Board of Secondary Education () and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education ().The demand comes in the wake of rising concerns over perceived academic injustice faced by students under the current State Board evaluation system. Representatives of major private educational associations, along with education experts, highlighted the stark differences between the evaluation methods of CBSE/ICSE boards and Karnataka's SSLC pointed out that the discrepancies are resulting in significant academic disadvantages for students in the CBSE and ICSE, the minimum passing score is set at 33%, which includes marks from internal assessments. For instance, if a student secures 15 out of 20 in internal evaluation, they need only 18 out of 80 in the written exam to pass. In contrast, Karnataka's SSLC mandates a minimum of 35% in the 80-mark written Karnataka are considered only for overall result computation, not for qualifying purposes. This rigid approach, parents argue, is unfair to students who may perform well throughout the year but face challenges in the final Kumar, a parent, opined that the current system puts children at a disadvantage when compared to their CBSE counterparts. 'The evaluation method should be student-friendly and reflect their year-long efforts,' Sandhya said.

CBSE students anxious over result delay amid PUC admission frenzy

Hubballi: As the results of the SSLC of the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) have been announced, some PU colleges have already started classes, violating the calendar set by the pre-education department in the city. However, class 10 students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), who are waiting for their results to be announced, are worried as admissions for PUC are already going on, and they may be denied seats at the college of their choice. Meanwhile, the strife between India and Pakistan has enhanced their worries as their results are expected to be delayed Bandakeri, Secretary of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Alumni Association, Hubballi, told TOI that many PU colleges have already stopped admission, saying their seats are filled. "CBSE's delay is hampering its students, especially those who decided to choose their college only after getting the result. Though some colleges have started classes, the pre-university education department is mute over the ongoing admission process and classes. Many colleges are saying that they conducted a test and admitted the students who scored best in their tests. Parents and students are facing mental agony due to this situation created by CBSE and local PU colleges," he TOI contacted some colleges, they said their intake was already full, but they have reserved about 10% of seats for CBSE students. They also mentioned that there is no specific norm to reserve seats for CBSE students. According to sources, about 1,000 CBSE students attended class 10 exams held in Feb-April, while about 10,000 state and ICSE students already have their Khushi, Praveen, and Kiran, who are awaiting CBSE results, said they are worried about getting a seat in the college of their choice. When contacted, Suresh KP, deputy director of pre-university, denied the claim by some colleges on starting classes. "No college is allowed to start classes before the announcement of CBSE results. Colleges are issuing applications, and they have released the first and second lists of selected students for admission. If we get a specific complaint, we will issue a show-cause notice to them," he added. He clarified that there is no norm to reserve seats for CBSE students, but equal representation should be given to them.
