India launches national challenge to reshape its packaging sector

India has introduced a new nationwide initiative aimed at encouraging sustainable packaging innovation, targeting startups and student entrepreneurs. The National Packaging Innovation Challenge, launched by the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), seeks to generate scalable, eco-conscious solutions that support both domestic industry and export growth. The challenge aligns with India's broader strategy to promote self-reliance through the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, with a specific focus on improving packaging standards for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). At the launch event in New Delhi, IIP Chairman Sunil Jain underscored the need for innovative approaches that minimise environmental impact while meeting global trade demands. Participants are being called upon to develop alternatives to traditional plastic packaging, embracing biodegradable, recyclable and reusable materials that align with global sustainability goals. As part of the initiative, IIP hosted a live 'Packathon' — a timed competition where participants addressed real-world packaging challenges submitted by industry partners. The contest allowed innovators to present practical, sustainable solutions for sectors such as food, healthcare and logistics, where packaging plays a critical role in safety, shelf life and transport efficiency. Tanweer Alam, IIP's Additional Director, noted that global demand for sustainable packaging is creating new market opportunities for emerging economies. He pointed to India's manufacturing capacity and growing technical talent as key advantages in the race to supply greener packaging to international markets. The global biodegradable packaging market is forecast to rise from USD 98.7 billion in 2023 to USD 176.9 billion by 2032, according to industry estimates. This trend presents a significant opportunity for countries like India to become major suppliers of sustainable packaging materials. India's plastic export sector, currently valued at USD 12 billion, is projected to reach USD 25 billion by 2027. Industry experts suggest that advancing sustainable packaging technologies could be a critical factor in achieving this growth. With global supply chains under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, the demand for innovative, eco-friendly packaging is expected to increase sharply in the coming years.
