Cricket Australia awaits IPL call amid India, Pakistan tension
Cricket Australia issued a statement, saying it was closely monitoring the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan on Friday, with several of its players and coaches currently participating in the Indian Premier League."We continue to closely monitor the situation in Pakistan and India, including obtaining regular advice and updates from the Australian Government, the PCB, BCCI and local government authorities, and maintaining communication with our players and support staff currently in the region," Cricket Australia said in a chairman Arun Dhumal said on Thursday that the BCCI was awaiting government directives before making a call on the continuation of the league amid the military standoff with Pakistan. "We are reviewing the situation right now. It is an evolving situation. We haven't received any directive from the government. Obviously the decision will be taken keeping all the logistics in mind," Dhumal told he confirmed that Friday's match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru would go ahead "as of now."The IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned midway due to air raid alerts in Jammu and Pathankot, casting doubt over the rest of the tournament. 10.1 overs were bowled after Punjab won the toss and chose to bat. When the first floodlight went out, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh had put up 122 runs for the first wicket. The broadcasters cut to the commentary box without explaining why the match was suspended. The official note from the IPL organisers at the time stated that the floodlights had the status of Friday's fixture, he added: "Yes, it is on as of now, but obviously it is an evolving situation and any decision will be taken keeping the best interest of all stakeholders in mind."Following the abandonment in Dharamsala, players and staff from both teams are being moved to Delhi via a special train from Pathankot, roughly 85 km away. The teams will travel to Pathankot by road. Airports in Dharamsala, Kangra, and Chandigarh remain closed as a security precaution against potential successfully neutralised a wave of missile and drone attacks launched by Pakistan late Thursday night, which targeted key military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and several other locations amid rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed strike attempts included attacks on Jammu's Satwari, RS Pura, Arnia, and Samba sectors. 'Runs the currency' as batting decision looms
England selector Luke Wright said "runs are the currency" as a decision looms over the batting line-up for marquee series against India and Australia later this Zak Crawley and number three Ollie Pope have been retained for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge this could be both men need a score to hold off the challenge of Jacob Bethell, who impressed in his maiden series against New Zealand but is unavailable to face Zimbabwe because he is at the Indian Premier League."In international cricket, someone is always under pressure or scrutiny from the outside," said Wright."This is no different. I have no doubt those boys will do well. When they are playing well, we're a better team.""Any player knows that runs are the currency. Any batter wants to get runs."Left-hander Bethell, 21, took an unexpected opportunity to bat at number three in New Zealand in December by making a half-century in each of the three though he is missing the Test against Zimbabwe, Wright praised the Warwickshire man, highlighting the benefit of his left-arm spin and the experience he is gaining by opening the batting with India great Virat Kohli for Royal Challengers Bethell does become available - for the five-Test series against India in June - England will have a choice to make. If they want him in their XI, Crawley and Pope would be the most likely candidates to make way. Jordan Cox is also in the squad for the Trent Bridge Test, while Wright mentioned Durham opener Ben occupying the spot in which Bethell thrived, would appear most vulnerable, despite his position as vice-captain. The Surrey man had a rollercoaster year in 2024, both in terms of performances and his role in the England side. At various points, he was captain, wicketkeeper, opener and number six. Although he made a match-winning 196 in the stunning victory over India in Hyderabad, he ended the year with an average of 33.13, the lowest by any batter in Tests with three centuries in a calendar at least has made a hundred in the County Championship this summer, a contrast to Crawley's torrid New Zealand he was tormented by home pace bowler Matt Henry and ended the series with an average of 8.66, the lowest by an England opener playing at least six innings in a single has not reached double figures in the first innings of his four appearances for Kent, and was out for six against Middlesex at Lord's on England point to success Crawley has had against India and Australia, and Wright said: "We all know opening the batting in international cricket is incredibly tough. There are not many people who thrive all the way. There are always going to be dips in form."You want to be loyal to the people that have performed well on that stage. He's as good as anyone on his day. I'm sure he's disappointed with his last six months, but that doesn't mean he can't have a great summer."Uncapped Essex seamer Sam Cook is named in an inexperienced pace attack for the meeting with Zimbabwe following injuries to a number of other Dan Worrall could have been considered after qualifying for England, but Wright said the selectors have not spoken to the man who previously played three one-day internationals for England international Wright also said captain Ben Stokes could perform a "full role" as an all-rounder after recovering from hamstring surgery."We'll have to make sure he doesn't do too much," said Wright. "He has a tendency to want to get stuck in. We'll just have to manage him a bit to make sure he's not doing too much."As Stokes builds his bowling in the run-up to the series against India, he could play for England Lions in one of their two matches against India A at the end of May and beginning of may be joined by Jofra Archer, whose return from a string of injuries has been carefully at the IPL, if Archer plays for the Lions it would be his first red-ball cricket in more than four years. It would also mean missing some of the white-ball internationals against West Indies that follow the Zimbabwe Test."We have a plan for Jof," said Wright. "It's week by week and he's ticking everything off. We're desperate to get him back into red-ball cricket and Test cricket."We've marked one of those games for potentially him to play that. We've got a white-ball series against West Indies coming up. If we can match that with one of those games in the Lions, that would be ideal. There's definitely an idea to use one of those games for him."

He also led New Zealand to victory in the inaugural World Test Championship.'Gary's results have been very impressive over a long period and we're very comfortable giving him some time to collect his thoughts,' NZC high performance officer Bryan Stronach said in a statement.'At the moment we haven't any strong preference for either a split-coaching role or a sole appointment who covers all three formats and we're unlikely to be clearer on that until we see who's putting their name forward.'New Zealand has just completed a 4-1 win over Pakistan in a home T20 series and a 3-0 win in the one-day international series. Equal Hundred pay 'realistic', says PCA chief
Equalising pay between women and men in The Hundred is a realistic ambition, according to Professional Cricketers' Association chief executive Daryl England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has not implemented a recommendation from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket for equal pay in the competition by this the pay gap between top men's and women's players has widened from £75,000 to £135,000, a move that "looks bad", according to former England women's captain Heather there is optimism the pay gap will close after sales of stakes in the eight Hundred teams were agreed in February."There is work to do on the commercialisation of women's sport. It's probably the biggest growth area, not just in cricket, but any sport," Mitchell told BBC Sport."Hopefully, we'll be sat here in 10 years' time with a commercial reality that it's on an equal footing to men's sport, it's watched by similar numbers of people around the world and Sky pay the same amount they do for men's cricket. I don't see why that shouldn't be the ambition."Equal pay is a realistic ambition, certainly, and it should be the ambition to make it that way."The large disparity between the top men's and women's players came as part of a salary increase designed to attract leading men's players to The salaries increased across the board, it was the top men's bracket that was given the biggest hike, up from £125,000 to £200, sales of stakes in The Hundred franchises, worth around £520m, to private investors are likely to bring changes to the competition, including greater alignment to other leagues across the globe, more overseas players and bigger the ECB has extended the eight-week window for deals to be completed, they are still expected to go through. And Mitchell believes salaries will have to increase further if the ECB is to fulfil its aim of making The Hundred the second-biggest franchise tournament behind the Indian Premier League."There are some big players that have come into the room in terms of investing in The Hundred," said former Worcestershire captain Mitchell."The ambition is for The Hundred to be the second-best tournament, behind the IPL. If that's the case, salaries need to match those ambitions. That's what we'll be in discussions about."Hundred salaries, along with regulations around no-objection certificates – the mechanism that permits English players to feature in overseas leagues – were a source of tension between the PCA and ECB at the end of last Mitchell says the two organisations have found more common ground on the issues during the early part of focus for the players' body in recent years has been the domestic schedule, particularly the congested nature of the T20 Blast often requires players to feature in matches on back-to-back days or even pivot from the Blast to the County Championship with little turnaround the coming season, which begins on Friday, the 18 counties will review the structure and schedule of the domestic competitions, with the possibility of changes being introduced for the 2026 counties set for significant cash injections as a result of The Hundred sales, there is hope that commercial pressures on the schedule are a high-performance review by Sir Andrew Strauss in 2022 was led by the ECB with the England men's team in mind, this will be led by the counties for the benefit of the 18 review suggested a cut to 10 County Championship and Blast matches from the current 14, proposals rejected by the counties. A reduction to 12 matches in each could be more feasible."The reality is we need to create space in the calendar in order to get the right structure," said Mitchell. "What that looks like, I'm not sure. If we go back to the high-performance review, the reaction from players was that was a little bit too far in terms of the amount that was being cut."Maybe it could be a small cut to either the Blast or Championship but the general feeling is to remove those back-to-back games in the Blast, those pinch-points in the season which have been difficult."If we get the commercials right in terms of when Blast games in particular are scheduled, on a Thursday or Friday night, hopefully it can have an advantage from that side of things. More revenue could be generated."

Stokes to miss early rounds of Championship season
England Test captain Ben Stokes is not expected to play for Durham in the early rounds of the County Championship as he continues his recovery from hamstring surgery, says his county coach Ryan 33, tore his left hamstring for a second time in five months in December and, having had surgery in the new year, has not played will not feature when the County Championship begins on Friday, nor will his Durham and England team-mate Brydon Carse, who is still recovering from the toe injury which ruled him out of the Champions Trophy last month."My expectation is that it'll be zero [early-season appearances] – anything else is an added bonus," said Campbell."They're coming back from serious injuries. The facts are they need to get up and running by the time the Test matches start." Durham have six County Championship matches before England's first assignment of the summer – a one-off Test against Zimbabwe - begins on 22 was initially ruled out of cricket for three months after surgery in January and a Durham appearance closer to the Zimbabwe Test has not been all-rounder continued his recovery by training again at Durham on Monday. Ten days ago he posted a video on social media of him having a gentle bowl in the nets."He's here nearly every single day working his butt off," Campbell said."The guy had hamstring surgery and was in the next day lifting weights, which I couldn't believe."He's such a hard-working bloke. He'll do whatever it takes to be up and running for England."Both as a player and leader, Stokes will be crucial to England's hopes over a huge year in Test Zimbabwe, England play India over five Tests and in the winter travel to Australia for the is also a candidate to replace Jos Buttler as England's white-ball captain. Buttler resigned after England's early exit at the Champions Trophy – a tournament Stokes missed because of his meanwhile, established himself as a key member of England's pace attack over the winter with 27 wickets in five Tests after making his debut in issue with nasty cuts and blisters on his left foot resurfaced during the Champions Trophy, however, meaning he had to be replaced in England's squad and was subsequently ruled out of the Indian Premier League."We've known about his foot problems for a year now," Campbell said."It's not new, but he needs to get it right if he's going to be playing a lot of Test cricket."If we look at it, then I think Brydon Carse is probably the number one priority for England right now with what he's shown in Test cricket. He's born for that sort of stuff."There's 11 Tests over the summer and winter and I think he's going to be number one on England's list to make sure that he's ready to go for that."
