Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta was once 'almost destroyed' due to..., then he invested Rs 6240000000 in KKR with Shah Rukh Khan and... Shah Rukh Khan became the owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) cricket team back in 2007, but he didn't do it alone. He teamed up with his Red Chillies Entertainment partner, actress Juhi Chawla, and her husband Jay Mehta to buy the team. When they entered the Indian Premier League (IPL), their star power brought a lot of glamour and attention to the tournament. Even though KKR didn't perform too well in the early seasons, the team still stayed in the spotlight, mainly because of Shah Rukh Khan's massive fan following. In a past interview, Jay Mehta recalled that when he decided to invest in the team, many people told him he was 'crazy' for taking such a risk. But he trusted his instincts and believed the decision would pay off. Speaking in a video shared by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) on YouTube, Jay offered some advice based on his years in business. He said, 'First, avoid taking on too much debt, it happened to us once and almost ruined everything. Second, build a strong team by hiring the best people you can find. And most importantly, stay curious. Read a lot, learn about how businesses work, and stay updated with the latest trends. Always try to stay one step ahead.' Jay Mehta revealed that when he was offered the chance to invest in cricket, his business was actually going through a rough patch. Despite the challenges, he and his partners decided to take a bold step and bought the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise for USD 75 million. 'At that time, things weren't easy for us financially,' Jay explained. 'But then this opportunity to invest in cricket came along. Almost everyone around me thought I had lost my mind. They said, 'You're crazy to even think about it.' But I had a strong belief in the idea. I wanted to go ahead with it.' He went on to share how many people had seen the same investment proposal but didn't understand how the business model worked. 'When I looked at it closely, I realized it was based on a cash flow model, which made sense to me,' he said. Jay also mentioned that the initial investment was relatively modest, but he had faith in the potential of the T20 format. 'I thought cricket could grow into something huge just like football in Europe or the NFL in the United States. So I took a chance and went for it. Looking back, I can say without a doubt, it's the best investment I've ever made,' he added. KKR has won three Indian Premiere League titles so far.

Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta recalls being ‘almost destroyed' by debt trap, made a ‘small investment' of $75 million in KKR during ‘a difficult time'
Shah Rukh Khan purchased his cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders in 2007 but he wasn't the sole owner of the company. To date, SRK owns the team along with his Red Chillies Entertainment partner Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta. When the trio bought the team, they brought a lot of glamour to a new format of cricket and soon after, even though there team wasn't the best performer, they were getting all the limelight, thanks to the superstar owner. In an earlier interview, Jay spoke about investing in the team and said that even though people around him told him he 'crazy' about making this investment, he was confident that this would work. In a chat shared on Institute for Management Development IMD's YouTube channel, Jay was asked to share some words of wisdom after his many years of business experience and he shared, 'First of all, don't take on too much debt because we got into a debt trap and it almost destroyed us. Secondly, you have to build a great team, try and hire the best people and going forward… I think, again curiosity, reading a lot, learning about business practices, things like that. Keeping yourself informed about what's going on and keeping yourself ahead of the curve. I think those are important things.' Jay said that his business was going through a difficult time when he got a chance to invest in cricket and so he, along with his other partners, made an investment of $75 million to buy KKR. 'In between all this, when we were also going through the difficult times, I got an opportunity to invest in cricket. Everybody said you are crazy, completely crazy. I said, 'look, I really believe in this. I want to do it'. When the auction came up, it was like a $75 million acquisition and I had partnered with a friend of mine to do this but other people were actually taken the document and not understood the business model and when you looked at the business model, it was a cash flow model,' he said. ALSO READ | Sandeep Reddy Vanga slams Deepika Padukone for playing 'dirty PR games', 'putting down a younger actor' after being replaced by Triptii Dimri | Controversy explained Jay shared that the investment was 'very small' but he believed that this format of the fame was going to become big. 'So the investment was very small and I really believed that okay, this is really going to turn around and cricket is going to become big, like American football in the US, or football in Europe. So I took a punt, invested in it and it's inarguably the best investment I have made,' he said. KKR has won three Indian Premiere League titles so far.

West Bengal sports minister alleges politics behind IPL match shift to Gujarat
West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas has strongly alleged that there is a political conspiracy behind the decision to shift the Indian Premiere League (IPL) playoffs and finals from Kolkata's Eden Gardens to Gujarat. He said that the weather is just an excuse.'Rain is an excuse, but it is a conspiracy. The BCCI and IPL Governing Council have blamed the weather but we have received the weather report. CAB had written a letter earlier to know what kind of weather there would be. The Meteorological Department had already written to CAB with the weather forecast between May 20 and May 30. The rest forecast will be published and will be analysed after May 26 said by Meteorological department. There is no forecast before this. We don't know when the IPL Governing Council became meteorologists,' Biswas a political motive behind the shift, he said, "We were supposed to have the IPL play-offs and finals at Eden Gardens. It is definitely being moved for political reasons. Why did you deprive the cricket lovers of Bengal of my words?" He refuted claims that law and order issues prompted the shift. 'The state BJP president and central minister wrote, the match has been moved from Eden for law and order. The IPL press release on May 20 said that the last four matches were supposed to be held in Hyderabad and Kolkata. But the IPL Governing Council has moved the match due to rainy weather.'Accusing the Centre of a broader political motive, Biswas said, 'On one hand, they are trying to kill the people of Bengal without providing the scheme funds, on the other hand, depriving cricket lovers."advertisementBiswas also emphasised the readiness and reliability of Eden Gardens as a venue. 'There have been 7 games here, nothing bad happened in one. The best system of water drainage is in Eden, it is completely politically motivated. This has not happened in the history of 93 years."Reiterating his claim, he added, "Weather is an excuse. For some reason, the final has to be held in Ahmedabad. In the last 4 years, the final has been held 3 times at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2023, the game was not played due to rain. Can any meteorologist say that it will not rain in Ahmedabad on June 3?'Backing the minister's stance, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma also dismissed concerns about law and order. 'Questions have been raised about law and order in the IPL match. There were 9 games here, 7 matches were played, a lot of people, 60,000 people watched the game every day. No one had any problem.''We have had meetings with CAB many times. But no one raised any questions. We only announced the match on April 6 for Ram Navami. We said it thinking about people's safety and people. That match did not go to another state. That match was played on another day. Law and order has always been good in Kolkata, and Kolkata has always been good. But there was some other motive behind it,' the commissioner of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Debjit Saikia, on Wednesday, announced that the IPL playoff phase will begin on May 29, with Qualifier 1 at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh. The second qualifier and the final will be played in Ahmedabad on June 1 and 3, respectively.
