High and lows of IPL: Vaibhav Suryavanshi's century and Rishabh Pant's price tag
Rajasthan Royals' teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi set the Indian Premier league alight with a magnificent century. Image: Arun Sankar / AFP The Indian Premier League has finally reached the playoff stage, later than planned, leaving four teams to battle for the title beginning on Thursday. AFP Sport highlights the best and worst of the T20 league in 2025 -- from a 14-year-old bursting onto the scene to deadly armed conflict bringing a dramatic halt to the action. Sensational Suryavanshi Rajasthan Royals' 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi catapulted himself into the world cricket spotlight by belting his first ball fearlessly for six on his IPL debut. The youngest player ever to grace the IPL made headlines with 34 off 20 balls against Lucknow Super Giants, but it was just a taste of what was to come. Nine days later, Suryavanshi smashed the Gujarat Titans bowlers to all parts as he scored the second fastest hundred in tournament history. The teenager brought up his century off 35 balls with 11 sixes and seven fours to stand behind only West Indies great Chris Gayle, who took 30 balls to make a ton in 2013. The staggering power-hitting of left-hander Suryavanshi, who cost $130,500 as a 13-year-old at November's auction, enabled Rajasthan to chase down their 210 target with more than four overs to spare. He rounded off a remarkable debut season with 57 against Chennai Super Kings in his final outing. Costly Pant Lucknow splashed a record $3.21 million to secure Rishabh Pant as captain, but the India wicketkeeper-batsman appeared to buckle under the weight of his price tag. The usually swashbuckling ball striker failed to fire or inspire as Lucknow were eliminated from the playoff race with two matches to play. He belatedly found his touch in Lucknow's final match on Tuesday night, scoring 118 off 61 balls in another losing cause against Bengaluru. The knock raised his season average to an ordinary 24.45 from an abject 13.72 going into the match, and barely disguised his poor value for money after a return of 269 runs from 13 innings. Dharamsala drama The IPL was suspended on May 9, a day after the Punjab Kings-Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abandoned while nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan exchanged heavy fire across their border. Players left the field and crowds were hurried out of the ground as air raid warnings sounded in the city less than 200 kilometres (125 miles) from Jammu, where explosions had been reported hours earlier. Players and officials had to board a train to escape to New Delhi because local airspace had been closed. A ceasefire allowed a resumption on May 17, but Australia and Delhi's Mitchell Starc, who had been caught up in the Dharamsala drama, decided not to return. Records wait Sunrisers Hyderabad came within a whisker of beating their own IPL record score of 287 during the second match of the season in March. Powered by Ishan Kishan's unbeaten 106, the 2016 champions posted 286-6 in a 44-run victory over Rajasthan Royals. Pundits predicted that the 300-run barrier might be breached this season. But after that no team went past 250 until Sunday, when high-scoring Sunrisers posted 278-5 in their final match as Heinrich Klaasen hit 105 not out off 39 balls. Dhoni decision? Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings completed a heavy fall from grace as they finished bottom of the table for the first time in their history.

Meet The 14-Year-Old Cricketer Setting Records In The Indian Premier League
Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed a century in the IPL (Photo by SAJJAD HUSSAIN/AFP via Getty Images) ... More So what were you doing at 14? Probably safest not to answer that. Even for those who were high achievers at a young age, it's doubtful anything can top the superhuman deeds of 14-year-old cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Talk about a phenom. In just his third game in the Indian Premier league - cricket's richest and most competitive T20 tournament - Suryavanshi smashed the fastest ever century by an Indian in the competition's 18-season history. At just 14 years and 32 days of age, Suryavanshi's 35-ball century against the Gujarat Titans was second only to Chris Gayle's - the powerful West Indian who was one of the biggest ever hitters - 30-ball ton in 2013. Suryavanshi obliterated the previous record of the IPL's youngest centurion - Manish Pande at 19 years and 253 days in 2009. He was born less than a week before India's last 50-over World Cup triumph in 2011. Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashes a century (Photo by) Cricket, the popular British bat and ball sport with some similarities to baseball, might not be known for particularly jaw-dropping athletes. But to whack a cricket ball, delivered sometimes at high speeds over 90 kph by the craftiest bowlers on the planet, high into the sky and into the terraces, requires a combination of incredible strength, hand-eye coordination and bat speed. Until this muggy, record-breaking night in Jaipur, it would have been deemed impossible that a batter so young, underdeveloped physically, could actually sustain that type of power against seasoned bowlers, grown men. All the frontline bowlers for Titans have played international cricket. Veteran quick Ishant Sharma, one of the bowlers he made a mockery of, made his mark in 2008 when he made aging Australian great Ricky Ponting look rather long in the tooth. That was more than three years before Suryavanshi was even born. With a whip of the bat, generating rapid bat speed, and timing the ball to perfection, Suryavanshi smashed 11 sixes into the giddy Rajasthan Royals faithful, unable to believe the history unfolding before their very eyes. A prodigy making his first steps, doing something so extraordinary that no amount of hyperbole can suffice. Vaibhav Suryavanshi is the talk of the cricket world (Photo by SAJJAD HUSSAIN/AFP via Getty Images) ... More Suryavanshi hails from the village of Tajpur in the Samastipur district of Bihar, where cricket infrastructure was limited. In a story that is common in cricket-mad India, his parents had to sacrifice greatly for their talented child, who displayed a knack for smacking the ball further than any other kid. Suryavanshi, accompanied by his father, had to travel around 150 miles almost daily to Patna, the ancient city and capital of Bihar that sprawls along the south bank of the Ganges River, to get the requisite training he needed. His dad had to quit his job, while his mom slept just three hours on average to make sure they were prepared for their daily journey. But the toil was worth it. His rise was swift. Suryavanshi was just 12 years and 284 days old when he made his first-class debut for Bihar in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy before last year hitting a century against Australia's under-19 team off just 58 balls. At 13, Suryavanshi was signed by the Royals for $130,000 in November's IPL auction in Saudi Arabia. After finally getting off the bench late in the tournament, he showed no nerves with a first-ball six off quick Shardul Thakur in his IPL debut setting the stage to conjure a performance for the ages. Suryavanshi is cricket's greatest phenom since Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar burst onto international cricket at just 16 and looms as the next face of the sport as compatriot Virat Kohli enters his final years. Of course, in the age of conspiracies and widespread scepticism, questions have been raised around the legitimacy of his age. 'He has already played (for) India under-19s. We don't fear anyone. He can again undergo an age test,' Sanjiv, his father, told the Press Trust of India previously. Vaibhav Suryavanshi is the talk of the cricket world (Photo by SAJJAD HUSSAIN/AFP via Getty Images) ... More Sports continues to shock us. A 40-year-old LeBron James playing 46 minutes in a playoff game after just a 36-hour break. Tom Brady winning a Super Bowl at 43. Simone Biles defying gravity. The teenaged Suryavanshi, who should be busy watching Marvel, consumed by video games or merely spending his time brooding in his room like his peers, has provided the latest astounding performance in the world of sports. But his every move will now be heavily scrutinized. No cricketer this young, obviously, has faced his level of attention. A new era of cricket has arrived and it should be some ride following the insanely gifted Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

IPL Match Today, DC vs KKR: Weather-Pitch Report, Live Cricket Score Streaming Online and Telecast Details
IPL Today Match, DC vs KKR Pitch Report, Weather Forecast, Live Cricket Score Streaming Online: Match No 48 of the Indian Premier league promises a thrilling encounter as Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals face off against Ajinkya Rahane's Kolkata Knight Riders for the first time this season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday. Slow pitches have been frequent at the high-scoring venue and the Capitals have sort of suffered partly because of this devious nature of the strips. DC vs KKR Pitch Report: The pitch in Arun Jaitley Stadium has always been favourable to the batters. The high-scoring ground has witnessed totals ranging between 190-200 being scored consistently due to the dimensions of the ground, which is quite small in size. Hence, ideally, winning the toss and batting first would be to the advantage of teams. However, the catch is not to over-attack in the first innings as has been evidenced in the last two matches here. Delhi will be hoping they aren't served another slow turner. DC vs KKR Weather Report: Rain is not expected to interrupt the DC vs KKR clash in Delhi.
