Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce supports new education board
Terre Haute -The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors is calling for a new board to oversee local schools.
The Chamber is endorsing Indiana Senate Bill 382.
According to the Chamber of Commerce, 'this bill would establish a local board of trusted leaders to oversee and guide the use of any county funds or property provided to the school corporation, an opportunity which is currently being explored.'
President/CEO, Kristin Craig, will testify in support of the bill at the Statehouse on Thursday, along with several other community leaders, including Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer, Mayor Brandon Sakbun, Vigo County School Board Member Amy Lore and Business Community Representative Andy Volkl, COO of Saturn Petcare.
'The Chamber, along with other key community stakeholders, are ready to support Senator Goode and his proactive and collaborative approach toward addressing the challenges facing Vigo County schools. By creating a trusted framework modeled on proven successes, this legislation ensures the community is prepared to act transparently and responsibly when and if opportunities for funding arise. Specifically, SB 382 establishes a governance structure that prioritizes accountability and aligns the resources available in the community with the most pressing needs,' said Craig.
Craig pointed out that this board ensures transparency, accountability and responsible resource management, reinforcing the community's trust in the process.
According to the Chamber of Commerce, the bill also requires that if the county transfers or gifts any unused funds or property to the school corporation, this local board will provide oversight to ensure those resources are used effectively and in the best interest of the community.
The Chamber will provide updates to its membership throughout the legislative session as this, and other relevant bills, progress through the legislature.
