Bhubaneswar: National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) organised a conference on Smart Mining & Manufacturing in Bhubaneswar on Friday on the theme 'Smart Aluminium: Driving Operational Excellence through Industry 4.0.' The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), in partnership with Metal Park Investment Middle East, announced the establishment of a dedicated Industry 4.0 Competence Centre in Abu Dhabi. The advanced technology hub will play a central role in accelerating the digitalisation of the metal manufacturing sector, supporting the emirate's ambition to lead globally in next-generation industrial innovation. Vice Chancellor Hi-Tech Dr Kamran, welcoming the guests, industry representatives and participants, said that the university has become Pakistan's first-ever international champion in the field of combat robotics by wining 'ENIM Robot 10 Combat Robotics Competition' organised in Tunisia. The students' projects highlighted topics such as energy efficiency, automation, design innovation and industrial problem solving. Featured projects included a solar-powered hybrid cooling system, automated vehicle, recovery ventilation, and a smart manufacturing module based on Industry 4.0. Other projects tackled the design of reinforced concrete structures resilient to gravity and lateral loads, the performance of aerogel-modified asphalt mixes for improved heat resistance, and innovative traffic solutions for major Sharjah intersections using advanced simulation models. The department also unveiled a geotechnical-structural design for a new astronomical observatory. Electrical engineering students showcased a 'chaotic mixing' system using DC motors to enhance industrial efficiency and energy savings, as well as a smart crop monitoring and protection system to advance agricultural sustainability. Their portfolio also included an AI-powered vertical farm, reflecting the growing intersection of technology and food security. The industrial engineering and engineering management department introduced practical applications such as digital twin-based educational tools, enhanced lathe processes using reinforcement learning, and a smart reservation system for electric vehicle parking.
