Akshay Oberoi Stresses The Need For LGBTQ+ Inclusion In Bollywood
Last Updated:
As India celebrates Pride Month in June, Akshay Oberoi underscored the need for greater LGBTQ+ representation and inclusion in the country's entertainment industry.
Akshay Oberoi's performance as a gay character in Inside Edge Season 3 earned widespread praise. Now, with June marking Pride Month, the actor took the opportunity to speak about LGBTQ+ representation in Indian entertainment. A vocal ally of the queer community, Oberoi also called out the Hindi film industry for overlooking their genuine love for cinema and web content.
In a chat with IANS, Akshay Oberoi said, 'Bollywood doesn't acknowledge it, but a lot of the love we get from the queer community. As someone who truly values love and identity in all forms, I've never been bothered about the sexuality of my characters. For me, it's about telling human stories, and every human deserves to be seen."
Akshay Oberoi then went on to reflect on his experience of portraying a queer character in Inside Edge Season 3. He said, 'I wasn't shy or disgusted to play that character. On the contrary, it was overwhelming and fulfilling to step into a role that carried so much internal conflict and courage. It's easy to play parts that fall into the typical hero template."
On the professional front, Akshay Oberoi is busier than ever. He's currently filming Toxic, a pan-India action thriller led by superstar Yash and directed by Geethu Mohandas. The film also features Nayanthara and Kiara Advani in prominent roles and is reportedly set against the backdrop of Goa's drug trade.
Additionally, Akshay Oberoi will be seen in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, slated for release on September 12. Directed by Shashank Khaitan, the romantic comedy stars Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles, with Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf playing key characters. The film is backed by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Shashank Khaitan.
That's not all — Akshay Oberoi has also teamed up with Manoj Bajpayee and Saqib Saleem for an intense crime drama. The project began filming last month, with the trio spotted shooting in Bhopal. Up next, they're expected to travel across different parts of India for the shoot. While excitement is building, further details about the film remain under wraps for now.
