Devils Have Called Hurricanes About Superstar: Report
The New Jersey Devils are looking to add to their roster by the 2025 NHL trade deadline. This is because they are among the top teams in the NHL, and superstar forward Jack Hughes is now dealing with an injury. Thus, the Devils undoubtedly should be looking to make moves over the next few days. The Devils reportedly have made it clear that they are interested in one of the game's best players. During the latest episode of TSN's Insider Trading, Pierre LeBrun reported that the Devils have contacted the Carolina Hurricanes expressing interest in superstar forward Mikko Rantanen. "They've [Devils] already called Carolina, for example, and said 'hey, if you're doing something with Rantanen by Friday, in terms of flipping him, let us know,'" LeBrun said. "I'm not sure if Carolina wants to deal him to the team that they might play in the first round, but it's an example of the eagerness and the way New Jersey may approach this deadline in the next three days." INSIDER TRADING…- How Hughes' injury affects NJ's deadline- Jets trying to be aggressive - Frederic deal gives EDM cap flexibility- Leafs' other centre options- Habs' patience pays off with Evans- TB poised to strike ahead of deadlineMORE: — TSN Hockey (@TSNHockey) March 4, 2025 This is certainly an interesting development, but it is also easy to understand why the Devils want to add Rantanen. He would be a massive addition to a Devils club looking for another star in their top six. However, as LeBrun noted, the Hurricanes trading Rantanen to a division rival and potential playoff opponent is a major obstacle in a potential swap. However, Devils fans will certainly pay attention to this over the next few days. In 60 games this season split between the Colorado Avalanche and Hurricanes, Rantanen has 27 goals, 70 points, and a plus-10 rating.

‘The Return Would Have To Be Mammoth': Maple Leafs Are Reportedly Interested In The Services Of Blues Captain Brayden Schenn
Potential trade targets for the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to surface ahead of the March 7 deadline. Not to mention, the club has reportedly been actively exploring ways to strengthen its center depth. On Thursday's version of TSN's Insider Trading, NHL insider Darren Dreger identified St. Louis Blues center and captain Brayden Schenn as a player who could be on the Leafs' radar if the Blues decide to shake things up. 'Some believe that there is potential that Brayden Schenn being traded by the St. Louis Blues. He is their captain, he does have a full no-trade clause, so it is a complicated process,' explained Dreger. 'But we also know Doug Armstrong, the general manager, very well – how aggressive he can be. And the Blues are underachieving right now. So yes, the top contenders looking at the market, looking for a center, are interested, and that would include the Toronto Maple Leafs. The return would have to be mammoth,' he added. INSIDER TRADING…- Could Brayden Schenn hit the market?- Crosby's 4 Nations status- #CBJ aim to be moderate buyers- What will happen with Brock Nelson?- Hartman's suspension appeal- Most NHL teams not concerned about 4 Nations burnoutMORE: — TSN Hockey (@TSNHockey) February 6, 2025 The 33-year-old is in the fifth year of an eight-year, $52 million contract with an annual cap hit of $6.5 million. His no-trade clause grants him full control over any potential move for the 2024-25 season. Due to the circumstances, it'll be tricky to maneuver around. As Dreger points out, the return would have to be substantial for the top-six center, likely centered on a package of prospects, and high draft picks. St. Louis currently sits 11th in the Western Conference with 53 points in 55 games – three teams out of a wild-card spot and six points behind the Calgary Flames (59), who hold the second wild-card position. 'Is there a team that would be willing to pay it? It's too soon to say, but I do believe that the Blues are at least testing or gauging the market to see what that level of interest is and, ultimately, probably have to make that call in the weeks ahead,' said has just 11 goals, 19 assists, and 30 points in 55 games for the Blues this season, with his production taking a dip over the last couple of years. However, he has played under Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube, winning the Stanley Cup in the 2018-19 season together. The former first-round pick has played with the Blues for eight seasons, now in his 16th NHL season, and approaching a major career milestone, having played 995 regular-season games with 271 goals, 394 assists, and 665 points. Considering his track record and resume, the fit makes sense. Besides, given the Leafs' injury struggles this season, general manager Brad Treliving has made it clear he prefers to acquire a center with term rather than a short-term rental. Schenn would fit that mold, should the Blues decide to move him.'If there's one (center) out there that fits, reliable on both sides of the puck, certainly somebody that can add offense, all those types of things. What you want and sometimes what's available is, are two different things. So we'll, we'll keep looking,' said Treliving in January. The Leafs have been linked to numerous centers over the past couple of months as the league inches closer to the annual trade deadline, most recently being linked to Buffalo Sabres center Dylan Cozens. NHL insider Kevin Weekes reported on Wednesday that Toronto is among several teams – including the Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames, and Detroit Red Wings – expressing interest in acquiring the it seems clear by all accounts that the Leafs will certainly be in the mix to add to their center depth or make a splash by March 7 – but time will tell in the direction they choose. Report: Maple Leafs To Make 'Real Push' To Sign Brandon Saad Once Forward And Blues Terminate Contract
When Brandon Saad has his contract terminated by the St. Louis Blues on Friday, one of the reported teams interested in his services will be the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to TSN's Chris Johnston on Thursday's edition of Insider Trading, the Maple Leafs will be one of several teams inquiring about the 32-year-old once he becomes a free agent. INSIDER TRADING…- 25-26 cap projection likely TBA at 4 Nations- #CBJ a team to watch re: Pettersson- Doughty returns; Team Canada closely monitoring- Guhle injury doesn't change Habs' deadline plan- Free agent Saad set to draw interest MORE: — TSN Hockey (@TSNHockey) January 30, 2025 Saad was placed on waivers by St. Louis on Tuesday and if he cleared, which he did, he'd be sent down to the Springfield Thunderbirds, the Blues' AHL affiliate. However, Saad wasn't willing to play in the AHL, so the forward and St. Louis agreed to terminate his contract. The veteran forward was placed on waivers again on Thursday so that both sides could end their agreement on Friday. Saad was signed through next season with a $4.5 million cap hit. "One of those teams I expect to make a real push here would be the Toronto Maple Leafs. Obviously, Toronto's in the market for a center, but interested in seeing if maybe Saad sees a fit for them as a potential wing option," Johnston reported. "But he's going to have options and what the cost is will be the determining factor for some of these teams because, obviously, Saad did walk away from that money. He's not going to come cheap necessarily." Saad has seven goals and nine assists in 43 games this season with the Blues. He currently sits ninth among St. Louis players in points. The veteran forward signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the club in July Johnston reported, the Maple Leafs are in the market for a center, meaning this fit might not work. However, Saad could bring some experience and depth scoring to a bottom six which has struggled to find the back of the net this season. The only problem: Saad likely won't come cheap, as Johnston reported. Toronto currently has just over $2 million in cap space, according to That doesn't include Anthony Stolarz or Calle Jarnkrok (both on long-term injured reserve), whose combined cap hit is $4.6 million. Jani Hakanpaa is also on LTIR with a cap hit of $1.47 million, further questioning if the move to sign Saad is possible. He has two Stanley Cups, though, and played under Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube in St. scored 42 points (26 goals and 16 assists) in 82 games last season with the Blues. The scoring might still be there, which could be of benefit to Toronto. It's just a matter of whether the Maple Leafs can fit him under the cap and what other teams will propose to him once he becomes a free agent on Friday. Saad has 260 goals and 255 assists in 906 career games, split between the Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Colorado Avalanche. He won his two Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015. Stay updated with the most interesting Maple Leafs stories, analysis, breaking news and more!
