Boy, 14, shot and wounded near school in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood
A 14-year-old boy was shot and wounded near Wendell Phillips Academy High School in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood Wednesday afternoon. Police said at 3:20 p.m., the boy was in the street on 37th Street near Giles Avenue when someone came up and shot him, striking him in the right leg. The scene of the shooting is near Wendell Phillips Academy High School, 244 E. Pershing Rd. In a letter to parents, Wendell Phillips Academy High School Principal Rashad Talley wrote that the victim of the shooting was a "member of our community." The letter did not specify whether the victim was a student. The shooting happened during dismissal for the day, Talley wrote. After the shooting, the school immediately brought students and staff indoors, contacted Chicago Police and the Chicago Public Schools Office of Safety and Security, and went on soft lockdown, Talley wrote. The lockdown was lifted as soon as it was confirmed there was no threat to the school. The victim was taken to Insight Hospital & Medical Center Chicago in fair condition, police said. Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.

Chicago shooting near Bronzeville elementary school injures 14-year-old boy, police say
A 14-year-old boy was shot in the city's Bronzeville neighborhood, right by an elementary school, Chicago police said. Police said the teen was outside on the sidewalk of the 300-block of East 37th Street around 3:20 p.m. when he was approached by an unknown person. That person pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting the teen in the right leg. The shooting happened right by Ida B. Wells Preparatory Elementary School. The teen was taken to Insight Hospital in fair condition, police said. An investigation by Area One detectives is ongoing. No further information has been released. Police did not say whether anyone was in custody.
