J-K: Rahul Gandhi to visit Poonch areas affected by Pakistan's cross-border shelling on May 24, says sources

New Delhi [India], May 22 (ANI): Lok Sabha's Leader of Opposition (LoP), Rahul Gandhi, is likely to visit Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, which was affected by Pakistan's ruthless cross-border shelling that damaged several structures, including government schools, according to sources. The region also witnessed heavy winds and storms, causing significant damage to schools and other buildings on May 21 Earlier, the Indian Army stepped in to help with emergency assistance in storm-hit areas. Schools located close to the Line of Control (LoC), especially in Gagrian and Sawjian villages, suffered serious structural damage. Schools in the Mandi zone also had their roofs blown away due to the strong winds. 'Schools in our Mandi zone have suffered a lot due to the storms here... The high school here suffered the most, and is located very close to the LoC. The roofs of the schools have completely blown away, which has created a lot of problems for our students and staff,' a school staff member told ANI. The school staff member also expressed gratitude to the Indian Army for helping with the cleanup and repairs. He urged the authorities to provide financial help for rebuilding the damaged schools. 'The Indian Army has helped us a lot, they cleared the debris which fell here... I would like to request concerned authorities to raise funds for the reconstruction...' he added. Apart from Poonch, several other districts in Jammu and Kashmir, including Rajouri, have also been affected. Locals have suffered damage to homes and loss of livelihood following Operation Sindoor, which was launched by India earlier this month. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has visited victims of the shelling in both Poonch and Rajouri. He has assured full support from the government, including help with rehabilitation. Sinha also held meetings with civil administration officials, police, and local residents. He announced that the next of kin of the victims will be given government jobs, and compensation will be provided to those who lost property. He also said a rehabilitation package for the affected will be approved by the Government of India, adding, 'A necessity for bunkers is being felt. New bunkers will be built so that people of J&K can stay safe.' India had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, post Pahalgan terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including a Nepali national. In response to the operation, Pakistan attempted to launch a series of drone and missile attacks targeting Indian military sites. However, India's Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems effectively neutralised these threats, preventing any significant damage. (ANI)

Pakistani forces targeted Golden Temple after India's strikes against terrorists: Senior Indian Army officer

Pakistan attempted to target the Golden Temple in Amritsar with drones and missiles on the intervening night of May 7–8 in retaliation against India's strikes on nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Major General Kartik C Seshadri, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 15th Infantry Division, revealed on Monday. The senior Indian Army officer said Pakistan had no legitimate military targets and was expected to strike civilian and religious sites in India. 'Knowing that the Pak Army does not have any legitimate targets, we anticipated that they would target Indian military installations, civilian targets including religious places,' he told ANI."Of these, Golden Temple appeared to be the most prominent,' he added. "We mobilised additional modern air defence assets to give a holistic air defence umbrella cover to Golden Temple,' Major General Seshadri said. The attack came in the early hours of May 8. Pakistan launched a large-scale air assault using drones and long-range missiles under the cover of darkness. 'On 8th May early morning, in the hours of darkness, Pakistan carried out a massive air assault with unmanned aerial weapons, primarily drones and long-range missiles,' he said, adding that the Indian Army was fully prepared and thus intercepted and destroyed all incoming threats. "We were fully prepared since we had anticipated this, and our braveheart and alert army air defence gunners thwarted Pakistan Army's nefarious designs and shot down all drones and missiles targeted at the Golden Temple. Thus, not allowing even a scratch to come on our holy Golden Temple,' the officer added. The Indian Army also conducted a demonstration to showcase how its air defence systems—such as the AKASH missile system and L-70 Air Defence Guns—successfully intercepted and neutralised incoming Pakistani drones and missiles, protecting the Golden Temple and key cities across Punjab. A defence ministry statement had earlier confirmed that multiple Indian cities and military bases were targeted in the overnight assault, including Amritsar, Jammu, Srinagar, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, and Bhuj. Explosions were also heard across Kashmir. 'These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems,' the statement said. The attacks came in the wake of India's Operation Sindoor – a coordinated military strike on nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The operation was conducted in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians.

"S-400 saved 15 cities from Pakistan's attack": Ex-Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor

New Delhi [India], May 8 (ANI): Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor (Retired) on Thursday said that the S-400 missile system has made an enormous difference during the recent tensions with Pakistan. In a self made video, Air Marshal Kapoor said Pakistan tried to target 15 Indian cities, but the S-400 system, which India bought in 2018 and received in 2021, helped prevent the attacks. Kapoor explained that the S-400 can detect aircraft, missiles, and drones and can be deployed quickly across the country. The system has a range of 400 kilometres and can track many targets simultaneously. Air Marshal Kapoor said, 'Pakistan tried to attack 15 of our cities saved by S-400, which was purchased in 2018 and delivered in 2021. It can detect aircraft, missiles, drones, and is fully deployable within minutes and has a range of 400 Kms... It can pick up targets... It is a versatile and mobile and has been deployed suitably all across the country... It was one of the purchases that made a huge difference in our latest skirmish with Pakistan...' Indian Air Force S-400 Sudarshan Chakra air defence missile systems were fired on Wednesday night against targets moving towards India. The operation successfully neutralised the targets. Earlier in the day, addressing the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) press briefing, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi said that India's Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully neutralised the threats. Colonel Qureshi further said that in response to Pakistan's attempted attacks, the Indian Armed Forces on Thursday morning targeted multiple air defence radars and systems across Pakistan. 'This morning, the Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised,' Colonel said. Speaking about Wednesday's press briefing on 'Operation Sindoor', Colonel Qureshi said, 'During the press briefing on operation Sindoor on 07 May 2025, India had called its response as focused, measured and non-escalatory. It was specifically mentioned that Pakistani military establishments had not been targeted. It was also reiterated that any attack on military targets in India will invite a suitable response.' 'On the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks,' Colonel Qureshi said. Following the terror attack in Pahalgam of Jammu and Kashmir in India on April 22, the Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday launched 'Operation Sindoor', carrying out precision strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), days after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. How India used S-400 Sudarshan Chakra defence system to take down Pakistani drones, missiles

NEW DELHI: On the intervening night of May 7 and 8, India used the S-400 Sudarshan Chakra defence system to take down Pakistani drones and missiles fired towards 15 Indian cities, thwarting Islamabad's attempt to damage military installations . The targets were successfully neutralised in the operation, multiple domain experts told news agency ANI. India's Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully neutralised multiple attempted attacks, preventing any damage to Indian assets. Officials confirmed that debris from Pakistani drones and missiles was recovered at several locations, serving as concrete evidence of the assault. What is S-400 Sudarshan Chakra? The S-400 "Sudarshan Chakra" is an Indian name given to the S-400 Triumf air defence missile system acquired from Russia. The term "Sudarshan Chakra" draws from the Epic Mahabharata, symbolising precision, speed, and lethal capability, qualities that closely reflect the S-400's operational strengths. Developed by Russia's Almaz-Antey, the S-400 is among the most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile systems in the world. India signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 to procure five S-400 units, with the first system deployed in Punjab in 2021 to bolster defences against threats from Pakistan and China. The S-400 can engage aerial targets at ranges of up to 400 km and detect threats as far as 600 km away. It supports four different types of missiles, enabling it to target everything from aircraft and drones to cruise and ballistic missiles. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Equipped with sophisticated phased-array radar, the system can track over 100 targets simultaneously and is mounted on mobile launchers for rapid repositioning. The deployment of the S-400 significantly strengthens India's multi-layered air defence capabilities, offering a strategic edge in protecting key military and civilian assets. It is widely regarded as a game-changer in South Asia's aerial defence landscape. During a press briefing on May 7, the government had described its retaliatory strikes under as 'focused, measured, and non-escalatory,' emphasising that no Pakistani military installations were targeted. However, following Pakistan's Wednesday escalation, the Indian Armed Forces responded proportionately, striking Pakistani air defence systems, including one in Lahore, which was effectively neutralised.
