'Will hit terrorists in Pakistan': S Jaishankar told US secretary of state Marco Rubio a week after Pahalgam attack

NEW DELHI: India will hit terrorists in Pakistan, external affairs minister told US secretary of state Marco Rubio in a phone call on May 1 after the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We will hit the terrorists in Pakistan, and there should be no doubt about it," Jaishankar told Rubio, according to ANI citing sources. 'If Pakistan does anything more, our response will be far stronger' also spoke with US vice-president JD Vance on May 9, "If they (Pakistan) do anything more, our response will be far stronger" when the latter called him up to convey what US intelligence had gathered about Pakistan's intent to massively escalate hostilities. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi told US Vice President JD Vance clearly that if Pakistan does something, the response will be more devastating and strong. On the same night, Pakistan attacked 26 sites and India responded very strongly. Strikes were launched on their bases," news agency ANI quoted sources as saying. According to the report, Vance, who was in India with his Indian-origin wife Usha and their children on the day (April 22) of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which led to the conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours, called PM Modi on Friday (local time) with the message that the US officials had assessed there was a "high probability of a dramatic escalation of violence that could tip into full-scale war." PM Modi listened but "did not commit to any of the ideas" proposed by the US Vice President to de-escalate, the report intervention came just days after he said in an interview that the India-Pakistan conflict is "fundamentally not our business." India-Pakistan ties hit when terrorist opened fire at a famed meadow near Pahalgam town, dubbed "mini Switzerland," and started firing at tourists. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, a charge denied by Islamabad. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After this, India retaliated back on May 7 with "Operation Sindoor." India conducted strikes on nine terrorist locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). In response, Pakistan initiated unprovoked aggression using artillery weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles. During the night spanning May 7-8, Pakistan launched offensive operations targeting multiple military installations across Northern and Western India, including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, utilising drones and missiles. The Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully intercepted these attacks. Both the countries reached to an agreement for ceasefire on May 10 but after few hours, India accused Pakistan of violating the terms of the understanding on Saturday night and asked it to take "appropriate steps" to address these violations and deal with the situation with "seriousness and responsibility". But after few hours, the situation cooled down even though residents in several border areas continue to live in a state of fear following days of shelling and drone incidents. During discussions on May 10 between Rubio and Jaishankar regarding India-Pakistan tensions, Rubio stressed the importance of immediate tension reduction. He also confirmed US backing for direct talks between India and Pakistan whilst supporting enhanced communication channels.

"Will hit terrorists in Pakistan": Jaishankar tells US Secy Rubio after Pahalgam attack

New Delhi [India], May 11 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on May 1 spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and made it clear that 'India will hit the terrorists in Pakistan' after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, the sources said. According to sources, EAM Jaishankar had a phone call on May 1 with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Jaishankar told Rubio that, 'We will hit the terrorists in Pakistan and there should be no doubt about it.' Notably, India had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in reply to the ghastly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. The terror attack had killed 26 people. India had struck nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan sought to up the ante with a series of unprovoked escalations using artillery guns and drones. On May 10, Rubio and Jaishankar held talks amid the India-Pakistan tensions, where Rubio emphasised the need for immediate de-escalation. He further expressed US support for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encouraged continued efforts to improve communications. 'The Secretary reiterated his condolences for the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam and reaffirmed the United States' commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism,' the US State Department wrote in a statement. Areas across the border were set up on high alert, and there were blackouts whenever attacks from Pakistan took place. On the night of May 7-8, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. Escalating its tensions with India, Pakistan targeted Jammu using Hamas-style missiles to target multiple areas on Thursday, defence sources had told ANI. The sources said the attack resembled a Hamas-style operation in Israel, where multiple cheap rockets were used to target cities.' In a decisive response to Pakistan's aggressive actions along the western border and Line of Control (LoC), the Indian Armed Forces on May 10 targeted critical Pakistani military installations, including technical facilities, command and control centres, radar sites, and ammunition strongholds. Precision strikes were carried out on Pakistani military targets in Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian, as well as radar sites at Pasrur and Sialkot aviation bases, using air-launched weapons from Indian fighter aircraft. Notably, India's Operation Sindoor, which was the country's military retaliation to the brutal Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, has achieved all three key objectives--military, political, and psychological, according to sources. The operation was marked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's declaration of destroying key terror camps across Pakistan, including those in Bahawalpur, Muridke, and Muzaffarabad. However, both countries agreed to a cessation of hostilities on May 10. Hours after both countries agreed to stop all firing and military action on land, in the air, and sea, reports came of Pakistan violating the cessation of hostilities with India's air defence intercepting Pakistani drones amid a blackout in Srinagar. Second night of pitch darkness in Amritsar as Indian air defences engage Pakistani drones

Around 9 PM, loud sounds were heard from a block of the holy city, not far from a military installation in Amritsar. Simultaneously, Indian air defences engaged a swarm of Pakistani drones. Soon afterwards, there were sounds of blasts, possibly from the interception. Safety measures were imposed after 8 PM Friday, as they were done the previous night, around an hour after Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney appealed to the public to follow guidelines issued by the administration and not to take to rumours. Amritsar: Amritsar district in Punjab was in pitch darkness for a second consecutive night Friday as the district administration ordered a complete blackout anticipating an aerial assault by Pakistan. Around the same time, hostile drones were also spotted in other districts including Ferozepur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Faridkot, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur, drawing a similar response from India's air defence grid. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sawhney informed the public that there is no fixed timing for safety measures such as blackouts to kick in, but these are enforced to ensure public safety based on the input the administration receives. Early Friday morning, blast sounds were heard from a village in the district. Sounds of explosion were heard early Thursday too, followed by the recovery of remnants of what appear to be projectiles used by Pakistan. 'On the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles,' the Ministry of Defence said in a statement Thursday. 'These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks,' it added.
