Armed groups in Damascus hands over weapons to Syrian Interior Ministry
Published May 5th, 2025 - 11:06 GMT DAMASCUS Armed groups in Damascus began handing over heavy weapons to the Syrian Interior Ministry on Sunday, following an agreement reached between Druze community leaders and government officials. The handover follows a clause in a May 1 agreement between Druze representatives and security forces, which is currently being implemented. Transfers of heavy weapons have started in Damascus' Cermana neighborhood, with similar efforts underway in Sahnaya and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya. Muhammad Seyyid, deputy director of the Eastern Ghouta region, told Anadolu that the Interior Ministry is accepting the weapons in stages. "Local leaders and religious figures in Cermana are actively supporting the process," he added. Seyyid also confirmed that light weapons will be handed over in the coming days and that many people have registered to join the security forces. He emphasized that only the Interior and Defense Ministries will have the authority to possess weapons in the future and expressing hope that the initiative would serve as an example for the rest of the country. Video: Syrian comedian mocks civilians' killings
ALBAWABA - A Syrian comedian posted a video on his social media account mocking the deaths of civilians in the coastal area amid the clashes that erupted between remnants of the former regime and security forces of the new Syrian government. In the clip, two men, who were disguised in women's outfits and hijabs, were spotted on the roof of one of the buildings while surrounding themselves with "fake" bodies, to represent people killed in the latest attacks in Syria's coastal area. The man who was wearing a blue abaya was saying: "May God not bless Ahrar al-Sham, they killed our sons, they never did anything. They were only going from 'the massacre to their home' and vice versa." The Syrian comedian said: "They discovered that my son owned a tank, gun, and bombs. He only killed 30 people." The other person in the clip said: "My son only killed 100 people." [Click on the image above to watch the video] What happened in Syria's coastal area? SOHR further noted that at least 44 massacres were committed since the escalation, sparked by attacks by Alawite militants on March 6 against forces of the Syrian Interior and Defense Ministries, fueling brutal killings, field executions, and ethnic cleansing operations beginning on March 7. Director of the Syrian Observatory revealed that 1093 people were killed in the latest unrest in the coastal area of Syria, most of whom are Alawites, in addition to some Christians and 25 Sunni, who were murdered at the hands of remnants of the old regime.
