Metrology has constantly pushed scientific and technological advancements; this day highlights metrology's impact on quality of life and conservation of the environment, thereby aligning with UNESCO's objective to advance science for a better world.
In 2025, the day is being observed on Tuesday, May 20, with the theme 'Measurements for all times, for all people,' emphasising the critical role measurements play in shaping our history, present, and future.
This occasion is particularly meaningful in 2025 as it marks the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention, an international agreement that formally established the metric system to ensure consistency and fairness in research measurements and unit standardisation worldwide.
The celebration, initiated in 1999 by the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM), honours the Metre Convention signed in Paris on May 20, 1875.
Every year, national metrology institutes, legal metrology authorities, regional organisations, and a wide range of stakeholders from more than 50 countries engage in the festivities.
