International UN Peacekeepers Day: Pakistan remembers 181 of its own lost in line of duty
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan joined the international community in celebrating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers today, Thursday, the prime minister's office said in a message, paying tribute to 181 Pakistanis who had been killed in the line of duty. The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, May 29, is 'an international day to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.' 'In the seven-decade history of UN peacekeeping missions, more than 235,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have rendered distinguished service in 48 UN missions around the world,' PM Shehbaz Sharif said in a message. '181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the eternal sacrifice of their lives in achieving international peace and security.' Sharif said the international day was an opportune occasion to review the many challenges facing UN peacekeeping, such as increasingly unilateral policies, financial sanctions, growing threats to the safety and security of UN peacekeepers, targeting of UN peacekeeping operations based on disinformation, and the destabilizing effects of new and emerging technologies. In an effort to address these challenges, Pakistan, along with the Republic of Korea, co-hosted the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Islamabad last month with the theme, 'Towards a Safer and More Effective Peace: Using Technology and an Integrated Approach'. Pakistan also hosts the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, tasked with monitoring the ceasefire along the Line of Control in the UN-recognized disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The date, May 29, for the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, marks the anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in 1948 to monitor the ceasefire after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which was the first ever UN peacekeeping mission.

Kerry students unite to celebrate their international community
Organised by the Parents Council-Cairde na Scoile- the idea was to recognise and celebrate the many cultures represented in the school. According to the Chair of the Parents Council, Mary Carroll, the idea was to bring the school community together to celebrate the diversity of the cultures in the Killarney school. The International Choir from KASI (Killarney Immigrant Support Centre) performed for the students as did Wilson da Silva of Killarney Movement and Fitness club who gave a fabulous display of the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira 'Often in Gaelscoileanna we might not realise there is a large diversity of cultures represented. In Gaelscoil Faithleann we have counted 21 different countries amongst our parent community, from Ghana to Lithuania to Portugal and Chile - today is a day to acknowledge and celebrate all these cultures.' 'Our International Day was full of colour, fun and learning, with flags, food, music and Brazilian martial art! Parents came into each class to talk about their culture and the children loved to hear facts about these countries, and to realise all the diversity in the school.' Mary said this is now an annual event that allows students to learn where their fellow students come from. 'This is an annual event that allows the school to recognise other cultures and make children aware of the value of diversity. It is a fabulous opportunity for children to meet directly with people from other countries and to hear first-hand what it is like to live there.'

LGL: Union City School District Foundation
Not every school district has one, but Union City does. The Union City School District Foundation is the recipient of this week's JET 24/FOX 66 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express. Helping students grow. That's the mission of the foundation. Donations to the organization help with a variety of initiatives, according to foundation board member Steve Jones. 'Most specifically, it's for the scholarships that we provide and also mini teacher grants,' Jones said. So teachers can come up with special ideas that otherwise that would not have been able to do. These teacher grants give them those opportunities to help enrich the lives of the students they have.' One of the most noticeable projects funded in part by the foundation is recent upgrades to the district's sports complex. Jones said, 'We put in all new dugouts, fields, fencing, concession stands, and most importantly, the press box. When you come into this community now, you can see the difference.' The foundation received a $250 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express and immediately assigned it to students for something special. 'We're going to put it towards International Day, which is a day we get to celebrate a bunch of different countries all over the world. And we get to try different foods from some of those countries. and play games and socialize,' said student Ava Greer. The work of the Union City School District Foundation can be supported by you on ERIE GIVES day, coming up August 12. Every week, JET 24/FOX66 and the Auto Express team up to honor a local non-profit. Find out who it is next, on Good Morning Erie on JET 24 or Good Day Erie on FOX 66, Wednesday mornings.
