International Olympic Committee confirms Russian teams are still banned from 2026 Winter Games
Russia remains prohibited from participating in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee stated that Russia is still penalized over its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The IOC made their statement, via Reuters, following reports about participating in the games. The reports suggested that Russian hockey officials engaged in conversations with the International Ice Hockey Federation about next year's event. "The IOC Executive Board recommendation from March 2023 with regard to teams of athletes with a Russian passport remains in place," the IOC said. "It is based on the fact that, by definition, a group of Individual Neutral Athletes cannot be considered a team. We take note that the IIHF has confirmed that it will follow this recommendation." Russia's ban means their dominant ice hockey team will not be competing after impressive performances in recent Olympics. The Russian men bested Germany for the gold medal in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Four years later, they finished second to Finland in Beijing. Russia's recent block comes after 15 Russian athletes played in the 2024 Summer Olympics under the Individual Neutral Athlete status. The athletes' participation underwent vetting by the IOC before they competed without the Russian flag and anthem. Earlier this month, the International Skating Union approved four Russian skaters' participation in the Milan-Cortina Olympics. Seventeen-year-old national champion Adelia Petrosian is among the group that received the green light to compete as neutral athletes.

IIHF president: IOC to keep Russia out of 2026 Games
May 26 - The president of the International Ice Hockey Federation told reporters that the International Olympic Committee plans to exclude Russia from the 2026 Winter Olympics. Luc Tardif was quoted Sunday by and on the topic of Russian participation in future events -- chiefly the next Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. "The IOC is the organizer -- we only deal with the competition (the hockey tournaments) itself," Tardif said. "We have been pressuring them to make a decision, one way or another, because we're getting closer to the Olympics and we need to know." "Recently they asked us to send them a schedule without Russia, so that's where we are. The official statement is pending but the IOC has told us that they are informing the Russian Olympic Committee that they are not participating in the Olympics." Russia was barred from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris following the country's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Individual athletes from the country were allowed to compete, but not under their country's flag. The official IOC announcement has yet to be made. Belarus, which is allied with Russia, is also expected to be kept out of the Olympics again. Russia hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and has won 46 gold medals across six Winter Games. The Soviet Union won 78 gold medals. The Winter Olympics begin in February, and much of the preparation is already underway. The men's and women's ice hockey teams have already been selected and divided into their groups for the competition, without Russia and Belarus. --Field Level Media

USA downs Sweden, will play for gold at hockey world championships
USA downs Sweden, will play for gold at hockey world championships Show Caption Hide Caption Former NHL player Riley Cote on all things Stanley Cup Playoffs Riley Cote stops by to talk all things Stanley Cup Playoffs and his partnership with Trulieve. Sports Seriously Towering American forward Michael McCarron was happy to finally shrug off the underdog tag as Team USA slammed six goals past Sweden to book their berth in the final of the International Ice Hockey Federation world championship on Sunday, when they will meet either Switzerland. With many of their biggest NHL stars traditionally skipping the tournament, the United States have not won gold at thetournament since 1933 and last made the final in 1950, but McCarron said his squad showed in their 6-2 win over Sweden that they were good enough to win this time around. "We have a really good team, we have a group of NHL players as well -- they (the Swedes) might have bigger names but we're all playing the same league," he told Reuters following Saturday's victory over co-hosts Sweden, who were favorites to win gold after Canada suffered a shocking elimination at the hands of Denmark on Thursday. McCarron's huge physical presence in front of goal was indicative of how the Americans approached the game, battling the slick stickwork of the Swedes with speedy skating and relentless aggression. "We try to play from below the goal line and create a lot of offense that way, and I think we did that. We created a lot of offence from below the goal line, we put pucks behind their D and forecheck hard and win a lot of pucks back that way," McCarron explained. "We had a good game, we played 55 minutes of really good hockey. We had a little bit of a wall there in the third but,you know, they were going to come out hard, and we were able to turn it around after a short little lack of puck play for us. That was really good." The 30-year-old from Michigan said that, with the final a little more 24 hours away, there would be little time to reflect on history. "(Making the final), that's pretty cool. I don't know what took so long for us to get back to a gold-medal game. I think it was 1950 for the last one, something like that, so it feels good," he said. "I mean, it's a quick turnaround. We're going to enjoy this for a quick little bit and go to sleep thinking about whoeverwins tonight, get ready for those guys. So it feels great but, like I said, we still have one more step to go."
