It also celebrated the establishment of the International Olympic Committee by French educator Pierre de Coubertin in Paris on June 23, 1894. While it was initially observed by only nine countries, over the years it has grown into a global event that has its yearly themes and celebrations involving over 200 National Olympic Committees and millions of participants. It is aimed at getting more and more people involved in sports either at a professional or personal level. It encourages people to actively participate in physical activity and ensure better health. One of the most important points raised by the International Olympics Day is the idea of inclusion and advocacy for social causes such as gender equality, mental health, disability inclusion, anti-discrimination efforts and more. Launched by the IOC in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), it encourages people to engage in physical activity and fosters motivation, community and fun. The campaign invites people to invite a "+1" to join them in walking, running, dancing or any other activities to create a sense of belonging and eradicate feelings of loneliness. International Olympics Day advocates that sports are for everyone. Sukhu flags off state contingent for nat'l ice skating championship in Dehradun from tomorrow
Shimla: Himachal chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off a contingent of 60 players from the state set to participate in the national-level ice skating championship to be held in Dehradun from June 25 to 28, from his official residence, Oak Over, here Monday. The players will compete in seven age-wise categories. Sukhu extended his best wishes to the participants for the tournament as also on the occasion of International Olympics Day. He said the govt has undertaken various schemes to support the players and has enhanced the prize money significantly for the medal winners of international competitions such as the Olympics, Paralympics, and Asian Games. Sukhu said the state govt has also increased diet money and is facilitating better travel facilities to encourage athletes. Athletes now receive AC three-tier train fares for journeys up to 200km and economy class airfares for longer distances. The objective is to promote greater participation in sports and provide modern amenities, which will help the younger generation stay away from drug abuse and embrace a healthier lifestyle, he added.
