Iraq launches expanded 'Study in Iraq' program, offers 16,000+ seats for 2025-26
Baghdad ( – Iraq's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, today (April 30, 2025) launched the third edition of the 'Study in Iraq' program for the 2025-2026 academic year, significantly expanding opportunities for international students. Building on the success of previous years, the initiative now offers over 16,000 study seats across undergraduate and postgraduate levels in diverse scientific and humanities fields. A total of 67 Iraqi academic institutions are participating, including government and private universities, and notably, universities from the Kurdistan Region. Opportunities include full and partial scholarships, alongside self-funded options. Minister Al-Aboudi stated the program enhances Iraq's academic reputation, bolstered by recent international recognition like WFME accreditation for Iraqi medical colleges. He announced new initiatives including an international student league and designating April 30th as Iraq's official 'International Student Day' with an annual festival. Enhanced Arabic language training and practical skills focus are also planned. Positioning Iraq as a historic land of knowledge welcoming global talent, this expanded program underscores the government's commitment to developing a high-quality, internationally engaged higher education system.

Education Minister announces the launch of the third edition of the Study in Iraq program 2025-2026
Baghdad-INA The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Naeem Al-Aboudi, announced Today, Wednesday, the launch of the third edition of the "Study in Iraq" program for 2025-2026 ,he also directed that April 30 be designated as an official International Student Day. In a speech during the conference launching the third edition of the "Study in Iraq" program, attended by an Iraqi News Agency (INA) correspondent, Al-Aboudi said, "The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, through all its university institutions and formations, has been keen to adopt and implement solid cultural and academic projects that consolidate the concept of university education as part of a global system of influence and contribute to strengthening Iraq's academic identity and its position regionally and internationally." He added, "The Ministry launched the 'Study in Iraq' program more than two years ago, which has become an influential initiative in attracting international students to study at our universities and colleges this program is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing academic reputation, improving the educational environment, and establishing global standards in higher education, especially in light of the accreditation of Iraqi medical colleges by the World Federation for Medical Education, which represents a qualitative step towards international recognition." During his speech, the Minister of Education announced the launch of the third edition of the "Study in Iraq" program for the 2025-2026 academic year, reiterating his commitment to supporting every ambitious student and enhancing Iraq's cultural standing in the field of higher education and scientific research, both regionally and internationally. He pointed out that "Iraq, a country of civilizations and history, welcomes thousands of international students," expressing his aspirations that "universities and colleges, under the leadership of their presidents and staff, will be a true incubator for these students, as if they were in their own homelands." He explained that "the scholarship program offered to international students over the past two years has reached thousands of places, a clear message from Mesopotamia that Iraq has been and continues to be one of the most prominent symbols and centers of knowledge in the region and the world, the previous two editions of the program achieved tangible success in attracting students, and today we are launching the third edition, as part of a plan that includes more than 16,000 study places, covering diverse disciplines and providing broader opportunities for scientific and cultural exchange." He explained that "one of the advantages of this edition is that scholarships are offered by public and private universities, in addition to the participation of a number of universities from the Kurdistan Region, bringing the total number of participating institutions to 67 academic institutions spread across the country, affirming Iraq's position as a distinguished educational and cultural destination." The Minister of Education emphasized that "this program offers a wide variety of educational opportunities, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and in various scientific and humanities disciplines, whether through full or partial scholarships, or self-funded study." The Minister of Education directed the "establishment of the Study in Iraq Association for International Students, the designation of April 30 as an official International Student Day, and the holding of an annual festival to mark this occasion. Additionally, there will be a focus on practical training and the development of Arabic language teaching programs for non-native speakers, which will enhance student integration into our academic environment." He stressed that "the launch of the third edition of the 'Study in Iraq' programme comes within the framework of our relentless efforts to develop the higher education system, enhance its openness to the world, and advance its performance towards excellence and quality."
