With so much plastic, it's not a paradise under water anymore, say divers
This World Environment Day, as the world focuses on the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution', environmentalists bring in a reality check of the world beneath where oceans are clogged with plastic, from large debris to microplastics that are risking marine life and worsening climate change at the same time. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Marine life is the foundation of the ocean environment and saving it means protecting the biodiversity of our planet that supports fisheries, tourism and oxygen,' says Dr Ira, an environmental science professor. 'NO ONE SEES THE SAD REALITY UNDERNEATH THE OCEAN' According to the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), plastics make up around 55-57% of marine litter, such as ghost nets, discarded bottles, single-use plastics, snack wrappers, etc. 'The beauty of the ocean is glorified on the internet, but we, divers, see the sad reality beneath it. And increasingly, we are seeing only plastic wrapped around coral reefs. The water may seem clean from the shore, but go even 10 metres deep and one can see how plastic is altering entire ecosystems,' says Aatish, a diving instructor. By collecting plastic waste from beach clean-ups and fishing communities, we not only reduce ocean pollution at the source but also build a narrative around the importance of land-tosea plastic interception Victoria D'Souza 'NOT JUST A COASTAL PROBLEM' 'Microplastics are a huge concern. They're being ingested by fish, turtles, even phytoplankton—the base of the ocean food pyramid. These then work their way up into the fish we consume,' says ecologist Dr Meenakshi Venkataraman. 'It's not just a coastal problem anymore, it's global. We often say, 'make a difference on every dive'. But to clean our oceans, the work must begin before anything ever reaches the sea. That's the shift we need,' says one diver of PADI. 'RECYCLING OCEAN DEBRIS IS A STEP FORWARD IN SAVING MARINE ECOSYSTEM' According to a report by the Central Pollution Control Board, India, India generates approximately 3.4 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, and only 30% of it is recycled. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A recycling centre in Bengaluru transforms the coastal plastic debris into functional materials like interlocking tiles for roads and pavements. 'Our recycled tiles serve as functional symbols of the crisis. When people walk on these tiles, they're stepping on what was once choking the ocean. It's awareness, action, and infrastructure rolled into one,' shared Victoria D'Souza, co-founder of a recycling centre in Bengaluru. When people learn about ocean pollution and then participate in cleanup drives, they develop a personal connection with the planet. This inspires them to become lifelong guardians of the marine world – Keith, a diving instructor in Goa Tips and tricks for a safe dive clean-up ■ Never dive alone; always dive with a buddy to ensure constant communication and assistance. ■ Plan your dive route, depth limits, and safety procedures. ■ Thoroughly check all diving equipment (BC, regulator, dive computer, etc.) to ensure it's in good working order before diving. ■ Use a mesh bag to carry debris, but do not overfill it. End the dive when the bag reaches its weight limit (4 kg/7 lbs) ■ Dive within your skill level and comfort zone, avoiding dives beyond your experience.

Longmeadow family filed lawsuit in 2022 deadly crash
LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A Longmeadow family is filing a lawsuit against the driver of the car that injured their daughter and killed her high school classmate back in 2022. Wednesday was the three-year anniversary of the devastating car crash that left then Longmeadow high school senior Shea Hamel severely injured and it took the life of her track teammate and friend, Katarina Boskovic. Fundraiser at Jersey Mikes in Longmeadow supports Be Like Kat charity Now, Hamel and her parents are filing a $1.1 million lawsuit against Zachary Elfman and his parents. He's the boy who they say drove their daughter while under the influence of alcohol after a party he hosted at his parents' home. According to their complaint, it left her with facial fractures, fractures of her cervical spine, and a traumatic brain injury, among others. Beyond Elfman's 'negligent and reckless' driving while under the influence, the Hamels' complaint alleges that Elfman's parents, Ira and Ellen, were home during the party, aware that there was underage drinking, and did not keep him from driving under the influence of alcohol. Eflman's attorney told 22News, 'The facts stated in the complaint are self-serving and not true and once the evidence unfolds, it will be shown that Ira & Ellen Elfman had no knowledge of the events occurring and the claimants brought their own alcohol with them.' The Hamels are also suing the unnamed liquor store that sold alcohol to Elfman, who was just shy of 18 at the time. Now, they're requesting a jury hear their case. Meanwhile their attorney was not available for comment at this time. Despite their current closeness, the memories of his past absence continue to weigh on him. Also read: Aamir Khan's daughter Ira Khan calls parent-child relationship very complicated: 'You're supposed to see them as people' Aamir and Ira spoke about their relationship and how it has evolved over time during an interview with Pinkvilla, which was held at the Agatsu Foundation, a centre for mental well-being run by Ira. When asked about how he deals with this feeling of guilt, Aamir said, 'I was lost within the magic of films and cinema, and I realised my absence after 35 years, and I felt extremely guilty. You also realise that you are never going to get that time back, and that disturbs you... I don't sweep things under the carpet and avoid dealing with them. I like to live with my feelings. That's why whenever any of my movies don't do well, I feel depressed. I mourn them because I feel that if I don't do that, it will stay with me for the rest of my life.' Ira also spoke about her relationship with Aamir, and her thoughts on forgiveness and healing. Ira said, 'He takes a larger volume of blame upon himself than I actually assign to him. In my mind, the blame is also on me, and there are a few things that even I don't do well, like not knowing how to feel and express anger. I have been trying to be better in the past 2 years, and once that happens, then I can decide what exactly I am angry about, and then the forgiving can begin.' Ira Khan is the daughter of Aamir and his first wife, Reena Dutta. Her younger brother, Junaid Khan, is an actor who made his film debut in 2024. Ira tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend Nupur Shikhare. Aamir and Reena got married in 1986. They also have a daughter, Ira Khan. Aamir and Reena divorced in 2002. He later married Kiran Rao in 2005 but parted ways in 2021, after 16 years of marriage. They have a son--Azad. On the film front, Aamir will be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par next. The film is a spiritual sequel to his 2008 hit, Taare Zameen Par.
