Lammy summons Iran's ambassador over spying arrests

David Lammy has summoned the Iranian ambassador to be 'held accountable' after three Iranian nationals were charged with spying in the UK. Mostafa Sepahvand, 39, Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44, and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, 55, appeared at Westminster magistrates' court on Saturday charged with spying offences. They were originally arrested as part of a counter-terrorism investigation and held under the National Security Act 2023. A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: 'Today, upon instruction from the Foreign Secretary, the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Kingdom was summoned to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. 'His Excellency Seyed Ali Mousavi was summoned in response to three Iranian nationals charged under the National Security Act,' they said. 'The UK Government is clear that protecting national security remains our top priority and Iran must be held accountable for its actions. 'The summons follows this weekend's announcement which stated that three Iranian nationals had been charged with engaging in conduct likely to assist a foreign intelligence service.' It comes after the British chargé d'affaires in Tehran was summoned to the Iranian foreign ministry on Sunday over what the regime said were 'false claims' about the arrests. 'The responsibility for the inappropriate effects of such actions, which appear to be motivated by political motives to exert pressure on Iran, will lie with the British government,' state media quoted a foreign ministry official as saying. A fourth man arrested as part of the counter-terror probe was released without charge on Thursday.

Iran summons UK diplomat to protest detention of a national

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has summoned a British diplomat to protest what it described as the 'illegal and unjustified' detention of an Iranian in the U.K., Iran's state-run news agency reported. IRNA reported Sunday that the Foreign Ministry summoned the U.K. chargé d'affaires and called the detention of its national, who was not identified, a violation of international law and expressed strong dissatisfaction over what it characterized as politically motivated judicial actions. The ministry warned the U.K. against further 'unconstructive behavior' that could damage diplomatic relations, IRNA said. Iran's protest comes as ties between Tehran and London deteriorate. Three men accused of being Iranian spies faced charges in a London court Saturday that they conducted surveillance on and plotted violence against U.K.-based journalists for an Iranian news outlet. On the day they were arrested two weeks ago, U.K. police took four other Iranian nationals into custody on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act in a separate investigation. They were released from custody Saturday, though counterterror police said that their investigation continues.

Iran Summons British Diplomat over Arrest of Nationals in UK

Iran's foreign ministry summoned the British charge d'affaires in Tehran, state media reported on Monday, over the arrest of Iranian nationals and what it said were "false claims" levelled by Britain against Iran. Earlier this month, British police arrested 7 Iranian nationals in two separate operations, with three men charged last week with engaging in conduct likely to assist a foreign intelligence service, in this case Iran, Reuters reported. The three men were remanded in custody and will appear at a preliminary judicial hearing on June 6, while the other four men have been released from custody but still face an investigation. "The responsibility for the inappropriate effects of such actions, which appear to be motivated by political motives to exert pressure on Iran, will lie with the British government," state media quoted a foreign ministry official as saying. Britain's charge d'affaires was summoned on Sunday and requested to provide an official explanation regarding the reasons and legal bases for the arrest of Iranian citizens. The British government has placed Iran on the highest tier of its foreign influence register, requiring Tehran to register everything it does to exert political influence in the UK.
