1,000-school project finished under the Iraq-China agreement

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, announced on Saturday that 1,000 schools had been built as part of the framework agreement with the Chinese government. Al-Sudani's remarks took place during the opening of 210 new schools in different Iraqi provinces, marking the completion of a 1,000-school initiative under the Iraq-China agreement, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Al-Sudani opened 790 new schools in late November as part of a framework deal with the Chinese government to construct 1,000 schools throughout several Iraqi provinces. In December 2021, a framework agreement was reached by the Chinese and Iraqi governments to construct the school project. Senior representatives from Sino Tech and Power China represented China. One of the major projects that will address the problem of overcrowding and triple shifts in many Iraqi schools is the development of the schools. Several schools made arrangements for pupils from nearby schools due to the devastation caused by years of violence and instability, according to the World Bank. As a result, many students work double or triple shifts, which may have an effect on their academic performance because they have limited time for learning—sometimes as little as four hours a day. The Iraqi prime minister confirmed earlier that Iraq needs between 8,000 and 10,000 more schools to accommodate the country's expanding educational needs.
