One arrested, one wanted in Statesville assault
A suspect has been arrested, and another is wanted in connection with an assault on Tuesday, according to the Statesville Police Department. It happened on the 1000 block of Old Charlotte Road. At the scene, the victims told police that they were walking along the roadway when they were approached by two suspects they didn't know. Those suspects then demanded the victims' cellphones and, when denied, physically assaulted them before fleeing the scene. One victim sustained a fractured jaw, while the other victim required surgery for injuries to their nose and eye and was transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. An investigation led to the arrest of 39-year-old Detrick Dontay Hamilton in connection with this case. Hamilton has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy, and assault on a female. He is being held without bond, according to police. The investigation into the second suspect involved in this incident remains active and ongoing. Statesville police investigating fatal crash on Davie Avenue
STATESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Statesville Police Department is investigating a fatal collision that occurred early Friday morning on Davie Avenue. At approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, May 9, emergency personnel responded to a traffic incident involving a 2024 Volkswagen and an electric scooter. According to the preliminary investigation, Matthew Miller, 39, of Lenoir, was driving the Volkswagen when the collision with the scooter occurred. The driver of the scooter sustained critical injuries and was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital where they were later pronounced dead. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is ongoing. The driver of an electric scooter died Friday morning after it collided with a 2024 Volkswagen on Davie Avenue in Statesville, police said. Motorcyclist killed in Statesville crash; Porsche driver arrested
A fatal collision between a Porsche SUV and a motorcycle occurred on Tuesday at the intersection of E. Broad Street and Eastside Drive, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Adela Portillo. The Statesville Police Department reported that Henry Baker, 64, was driving the Porsche Cayenne westbound on E. Broad Street and attempted to turn left onto Eastside Drive when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic, striking Portillo's motorcycle. Portillo sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries despite life-saving efforts. ALSO READ: Motorcyclist hospitalized following crash with gas truck in Catawba County Further investigation revealed open containers inside Baker's vehicle at the time of the collision, leading to his arrest on Wednesday. Baker has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to yield the right of way, and possession of an open container after consuming alcohol, and was issued a $10,000 secured bond. The Traffic Division of the Statesville Police Department is continuing its investigation into the collision and urges anyone with information to contact them at 704-878-3406.
