Ahmedabad Air India plane crash: Last rites of crew member Irfan Shaikh held in Pimpri Chinchwad

Relatives and friends gave an emotional farewell to Irfan Shaikh, a crew member of the ill-fated Air India that crashed in Ahmedabad last week, as his remains were laid to rest at Pimpri Chinchwad in Maharashtra on Saturday (June 21, 2025). The Shaikh family received 22-year-old Irfan's remains after a DNA match on Friday (June 20), and they were brought to Pune in the early hours of the day. The final rites were held at a graveyard in Nehru Nagar in the presence of family, neighbours, friends, and leaders from across political parties. Irfan was on board the London-bound Air India flight, AI 171, that crashed into a building in a medical college complex moments after take-off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on June 21. A total of 241 persons on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft were killed in the crash, along with 29 others on the ground. 'Irfan joined the aviation industry as a cabin crew member two years ago after completing a course. He initially worked with Vistara, and after the Air India-Vistara merger, he began flying on international routes,' a relative said. The youngster had big dreams and was determined to excel in the field, but the crash shattered all those dreams, he added.

‘Irfan was ecstatic when he got the job': Kin of Air India crew member from Pimpri Chinchwad wait to receive his body

Among the 241 people who perished in Thursday's Air India crash in Ahmedabad, including two pilots and 10 crew members, one was from Pimpri Chinchwad. Close relatives of Irfan Shaikh, 22, a crew member, rushed to Ahmedabad and identified his body soon after the incident but are still waiting to take possession of it. 'In the Ahmedabad plane crash, Irfan Shaikh, brother of Aamir Shaikh, who lives in Pimpri, has been identified as the deceased. The Shaikh family has travelled to Ahmedabad to claim the body. Although the body has been identified, there is delay in further process (sic)…,' Irfan's relative Azhar Shaikh said in a social media post. Irfan had joined Air India two years ago as a cabin crew member. 'He was earlier with Vistara which merged with Air India,' his uncle Javed Shaikh told this paper. The Shaikh family has been living in the Sant Tukaram area for more than 40 years. Irfan has an elder brother. He did his schooling from Dr D Y Patil High School, which was located close to his residence, before completing Class 11 and 12 at Jai Hind School, Pimpri. Relatives and close friends said Irfan was a handsome guy who was always cool and composed. 'He never argued unnecessarily or indulged in quarrels with anyone. It was not in his nature to pick a fight. He was more of a studious kind,' they said. Ujwal Bhagat, who studied with Irfan Dr D Y Patil School, said, 'After Class 12, I and another classmate went for an aviation course. Irfan did an aviation course from a Pune institute and after that he joined as a cabin crew member.' Bhagat said Irfan was a career-minded individual and always studied hard. 'I think I got 90 per cent in Class 10 exams and also did well in Class 12. I don't know whether it was his dream to be part of an airplane, but he looked extremely happy when he got the airline job. He was talking about flying high and going to various countries,' he added. 'When he got the job with the airline, Irfan was absolutely ecstatic… He distributed pedhas at the school,' said another former student. Relatives said Irfan was very close to his mother Taslim. 'He used to send his duty schedule to her cell phone. He would also call and tell his mother when he was flying,' uncle Javed said, adding that Irfan had just come home for Eid celebrations. 'We met and had a general chat. He looked happy and at peace with himself.' On Thursday when the plane crashed, it was Taslim who saw it on the news. 'As she was aware of his duty schedule, she immediately realised something was wrong. She insisted to be taken to Ahmedabad and proceed on Thursday evening itself with his brother and a relative,' he said. Manoj More has been working with the Indian Express since 1992. He has also covered stories from Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur, Sangli, Ahmednagar and Latur. He has had maximum impact stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial city which he has covered extensively for the last three decades. The biggest achievement of his career is getting a nearly two kilometre road done on Pune-Mumbai highway in Khadki in 2006. He wrote stories on the state of roads since 1997. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives. Manoj More's campaign against tree cutting on Pune-Mumbai highway in 1999 and Pune-Nashik highway in 2004 saved 2000 trees. During Covid, over 50 doctors were asked to pay Rs 30 lakh each for getting a job with PCMC. The PCMC administration alerted Manoj More who did a story on the subject, asking then corporators how much money they story worked as doctors got the job without paying a single paisa. Seniors duped of 2.2cr, Pune accountant, 2 others arrested

Mumbai: An accountant from Pune is among three people arrested by cyber police in two separate cases of digital arrest scams where two elderly women were cheated of Rs 1.7 crore and Rs 49 lakh, respectively. Police made the arrests after following the money trail from the victims' bank accounts. In the first case, a 61-year-old retired teacher from Mahim was accused of carrying drugs by fake crime branch officers and would have continued to pay them had she not chanced upon a cybercrime awareness video on YouTube. The woman received a call from a "courier service" on Jan 22 about her parcel containing drugs and passports. When she denied having anything to do with it, the caller asked her to contact an investigation officer from the "crime branch". She did so and the fake officer asked her to send an application demanding a priority investigation. Multiple "officers" got in touch with her thereafter and said her case was a "national secret" in a purported covert operation. She was required to stay off social media and send an hourly WhatsApp report about her location. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Soluções de energia de confiança para Data Centers de IA Siemens Energy Read More Undo The next day, a fake ED officer called her up and gathered details on all her bank accounts and properties. She was asked to transfer money for verification. Over the next month, she paid Rs 1.7 crore and was assured that her money would be refunded eventually. When her money dried up, the fraudsters asked her to mortgage her ancestral property. She then chanced upon a YouTube video and realised she had been conned. After a complaint was lodged with central region cyber police, a team under the supervision of senior inspector Irfan Shaikh found that around Rs 30 lakh had been transferred from the victim's bank account to that of a Pune-based accountant, Ajay Divekar. Police arrested Divekar (40) and an aide, Nitin More, from Pune on May 27. More had worked for a commission of Rs 15,000, police said. In the second case, a 72-year-old retired company executive from Borivli paid Rs 49 lakh to fraudsters despite sensing that something was amiss. The woman received a call on March 9 by a man claiming to be an Andheri police inspector. She asked him why he was speaking in Hindi and not Marathi; the fraudster said he hailed from Delhi. A few days later, she received a call from a fake CBI officer, who told her not to contact the inspector anymore. He claimed that a copy of her Aadhaar card had been found at the home of an airline's chairman who was being probed for money laundering. The elderly woman was terrified. The fraudsters asked her to liquidate all her fixed deposits and submit the money for a tally, assuring her that it would be refunded. She paid Rs 49 lakh in instalments. When she approached a neighbour for a loan, the latter alerted her that she was being conned. After a complaint was lodged with north region cyber police, a team under the supervision of acting senior inspector Sudhakar Humbe found that Rs 14 lakh was transferred from the victim's bank account into that of an Ahmedabad resident, Ram Balwani. Police questioned Balwani, who said that his bank account was being operated by one Gopal Ram (30). Police arrested Ram from Ahmedabad on May 28.
