Lake Victoria wins Irish 1,000 Guineas in style

Lake Victoria withstood a strong challenge from 50-1 outsider California Dreamer to take victory in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh. Like Field of Gold in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Saturday, the 10-11 shot was out to rebound from a disappointing display at O'Brien's filly had been unbeaten, including a win at the Breeders' Cup, prior to the 1,000 Guineas this month but came in sixth out of 10 an impressive response under Ryan Moore, the three-year-old had to be patient before showing her class, riding along the rail before gliding ahead of California Dreamer to win by two and a quarter lengths with Cercene (20-1) in third. "She ran beautifully today," Moore told RTE Sport after winning this race for the fourth time."She's come on massively from Newmarket. It's really exciting."It was an 11th win in this race for O'Brien but his first since 2021.

Lake Victoria the headline act as Aidan O'Brien targets further Guineas riches at the Curragh

Global powerhouse Aidan O'Brien looks to have another superstar on his hands. Photo: Kenneth Chan Aidan O'Brien is hoping Lake Victoria can get him back to winning ways in the Group One Irish 1,000 Guineas (1,600m) at the Curragh on Sunday. The Ballydoyle trainer has won the first Irish Classic of the campaign a record 10 times, but has been winless since Empress Josephine triumphed in the 2021 running. O'Brien relies on Lake Victoria to be the next superstar filly off the Coolmore conveyor belt and his daughter of Frankel looked the part with an unbeaten juvenile campaign that featured a trio of top level successes. She is special! Lake Victoria wins the @BreedersCup Juvenile Fillies Turf! #BC24 — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) November 1, 2024 Winning the Group One Moyglare Stakes (1,400m), the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes (1,200m) and the Group One Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf (1,600m) marked her out as something special, but she flopped on return in the Group One 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket (1,600m) three weeks ago. She ran well below market expectations in fifth that day, but O'Brien's horses tend to improve for their reappearance and it is not easy to forget her exploits in 2024. To win, however, she will need to reverse form with the Ollie Sangster-trained pair of Flight and Simmering, who finished second and third respectively in the 1,000 Guineas. Sangster is in just his third year of training and is yet to break down the Group One door, but his improving Flight has put him firmly in the shop window. She went agonisingly close at Newmarket alongside Simmering, who defied huge odds to snatch a place despite falling out of the stalls. CLASS 💫 Desert Flower sees her race out strongly to justify short odds in the 1000 Guineas. The boys in blue are on fire! 🟦 @Betfred | @WilliamBuickX | @godolphin — Racing TV (@RacingTV) May 4, 2025 Another fly in the ointment could be Dermot Weld's Juddmonte filly Swelter, who stepped forward from a debut win to land the Group Three Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle Stakes (1,400m) at Leopardstown in March. That form was empathically franked by the second-place horse Exactly, who ran an enormous race to finish third in the Group One Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (1,600m) at Longchamp and she is one of the least exposed horses in the field. Exactly reopposes her and forms a four-strong squad for O'Brien, with Bedtime Story and January also heading to the Curragh.

Horse racing tips: Sunday, May 25

It's Irish 1,000 Guineas day at the Curragh on Sunday – the first fillies' Classic of the season in Ireland. The card also features the Tattersalls Gold Cup and our expert has a selection for both Group 1 races. Ron Wood's selections: Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). If you already have a William Hill account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 3.05 Curragh – Tattersalls Gold Cup (1m 2 1/2f) This isn't always a deep Group 1 race but it's a good, competitive one this time around. It features last year's winner White Birch, the 2024 Champion Stakes winner Anmaat, and Kalpana, who won a Group 1 contest on the same Ascot card in October. There's also Los Angeles, the winner of last season's Irish Derby who most recently defeated White Birch in a Group 2 contest at this course. However, preference is for GHOSTWRITER. He came up just short in a few Group 1s last season and again in the Dubai Turf at Meydan on his reappearance in March, but that most recent outing was a decent showing behind three-race fit rivals in what was a competitive, international contest. He doesn't need to improve much. Selection: Ghostwriter @ 11/2 with William Hill 3.40 Curragh – Irish 1,000 Guineas (1m) Last year's star two-year-old filly, Lake Victoria, a triple top-level winner, will be the focus in this one. She reappeared with a sixth-place finish in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, which was fine considering she was reportedly late back into full training and seemingly needed the run. However, anyone taking a short price about Lake Victoria is putting a lot of faith in her coming on a bundle for the Newmarket outing. She finished behind the Ollie Sangster-trained runners Flight and Simmering, both of whom she faces again now – and it's easy to pick holes in her juvenile form, for all that she was winning everything. Dermot Weld's unbeaten Swelter is an interesting runner, but she's drawn wide and Lake Victoria's biggest threat may come from her stablemate JANUARY. The selection could need this run, her first of the season, but she twice finished second to subsequent 1,000 Guineas winner Desert Flower last term, so her form ties in some of the main players, and she's a sizeable type who has the potential to improve as a three-year-old.
