How Photoshop-Gate Affected Prince William and Kate Middleton's Relationship

Prince William and Kate Middleton are experiencing better days one year out from the princess revealing her cancer diagnosis after intense public scrutiny following her highly publicized Photoshop scandal. Royal sources reveal that, at the time, the drama had a big impact on them as a couple. "There was a real sense then that they felt bruised by it," royal author Robert Hardman told People. "It was treated like some great fraud." After recovering from an abdominal surgery at the end of 2023, Middleton remained out of the public eye for several months, appearing mostly in images taken by herself or William that she later edited. After concerns grew from royal observers, Middleton revealed on March 22, 2024 that she had cancer and would be stepping back from royal duties as she tried to recover. "It was like being on a roller coaster for them…undergoing chemotherapy and trying to protect your children," Ailsa Anderson, former press secretary for Queen Elizabeth, told People. "It was like being in the middle of a tornado and not knowing when it was going to calm down." "If you're Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer," the prince's former private secretary Jason Knauf said in an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, referring to both Kate and King Charles's cancer diagnoses. "[It was] absolutely awful…the lowest I've ever seen him." Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith added that the Prince and Princess of Wales "were besieged by ugly speculation and intrusion, with Kate having to make an announcement that was very worrying and uncertain." Now, with a turbulent year behind her, Middleton is back to work, recently visiting cancer hospitals and attending the Irish Guard's St. Patrick's Day Parade. "She is the MVP of the royal family, and no one knew when she was going to come back,' royal historian Amanda Foreman explained, to which Hardman added, "There is definitely a feeling of resetting the dial—of being back." Dressed in a matching forest green beret, coat and scarf, the outfit was complemented by a gold, three-leaf clover pin. In celebration, Kate also appeared to sip a beer and posed for photos with the Irish Guard. Kate did not take part in the British Army regiment's annual event last year, which came days before the princess revealed to the world that she had cancer. Last March, Kate was set to undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy. "It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed (sic) on recovery," the Princess of Wales said in a post on social media Jan. 14. Princess Kate was a welcome sight at the Irish Guard's St. Patrick's Day Parade today in London, marking her first attendance at the event since she announced her cancer diagnosis last spring. The Princess of Wales, who serves as the honorary colonel of the regiment, smiled brightly as she strolled the grounds of the Wellington Barracks with soldiers. For the occasion, she wore a long teal coat adorned with a golden shamrock brooch, a matching scarf, and a dark-green floral fascinator. She accented the look with hints of black, from a pair of slouchy pointed-toe suede boots to her choice of gloves. For one final touch of St. Patrick's green, Kate wore emerald-and-diamond earrings. Kate's absence at last year's St. Patrick's Day parade was due to her recovery from an abdominal surgery that she had undergone in January. A few months later, Kate announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer following the operation. 'At the time, it was thought that my condition was noncancerous,' Kate said. 'The surgery was successful; however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.' Earlier this year, Kate revealed that she is now in remission from her cancer after having successfully completed her chemotherapy treatment. 'It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery,' Kate said in a statement shared to social media. 'As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead.' Kate Middleton Will Be Making a Major Solo Appearance for St. Patrick's Day this Year

Kate Middleton's style streak of royal red outfits could be coming to an end, as the Palace has confirmed the Princess of Wales will be leaning into the luck of the Irish for her next appearance on Monday, March 17. As Prince William jet-sets on his first official overseas trip of the year on March 20, Kate will be holding up the fort at home by taking part in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Central London. It's a special solo appearance for Kate, as the princess was named the Colonel of the Irish Guards in March 2023. She took the torch from the previous patron Prince William, who had served in the position since 2011. The regiment, which was first formed by Queen Victoria to commemorate Irish soldiers who fought on behalf of the British empire in the second Boer War, will be celebrated at Wellington Barracks this year. Back in 2023, William was by Kate's side as she wore a teal skirt suit while taking part in her colonel duties for the first time. Her responsibilities included handing shamrocks to soldiers as well as the regiment's adorable mascot, an Irish Wolf Hound, the awarding of medals, and an official salute. Kate–who's been a regular at the annual parade for years–has also enjoyed mingling with soldiers and their families, as well as enjoying a customary pint of Guinness. While the princess missed last year's St. Patrick's Day celebration due to her cancer battle, she was there in spirit as she reportedly spent over $2,000 on drinks for the Irish Guard, or about 700 pints of Guinness. She also made up her absence at the annual Colonel's Review, which traditionally happens the weekend before Trooping the Colour, as the Irish Guards shared a sweet apology note that 'Colonel Catherine' sent them on social media. A week later, the princess made a surprise appearance at the Trooping the Colour, where she proudly watched the Irish Guards lead the parade during the monarchy's birthday celebration. With Kate making a triumphant solo return at this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade, all eyes will be on the princess (and her green-hued outfit of choice) as she celebrates alongside her regiment.
