Russell Martin to Rangers ‘makes sense' claims ex-Premier League star as he reveals trait that makes him top candidate

The ace was a former target of Celtic but has backed Martin to succeed on the other side of Glasgow RUSS HOUR Russell Martin to Rangers 'makes sense' claims ex-Premier League star as he reveals trait that makes him top candidate RANGERS suffered another disappointment under Barry Ferguson with a 2-2 draw against St Mirren on Saturday. The interim Gers boss is battling to prove he deserves the permanent gig - but a former Premier League player has tipped Russell Martin for the job instead. The 2-2 draw at the SMISA Stadium means the Ibrox interim now has a record of four wins from 11 since replacing Philippe Clement in February. The Gers Hall of Famer revealed he is set for talks with incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell, promising to be 'honest and clear' when the pair 'bang heads'. But ex-Premier League striker Shane Long has instead revealed he fancies Russell Martin to step into the hotseat. Advertisement Martin recently dodged the question when asked on Sky whether he would consider returning to Scotland to manage in Glasgow. But Long told BoyleSports, who offer the latest Irish Premier Division Odds & Betting, that he thinks the ex-Southampton gaffer's passing style would be a success in the Premiership. Long said: "He plays a lovely style of football, passing it out from the back and he gets that kind of belief in the players to do it, go out there and show it. "In that league, Rangers need to play that way to dominate teams because teams are going to sit back in and defend so you need to be able to pass it around and open up gaps and spaces." Advertisement Martin turned out for Gers in the 2017/18 season, as well as earning 29 caps for the Scottish national team. Long continued: "He's obviously played up there as well so it does make sense for him to go back. Celtic fans demand 'build him a statue' after Daizen Maeda trolls Rangers during four-in-a-row title party "I've met him a few times and he's a lovely guy. "He loves the game of football, he lives and breathes it and I think to be a manager at Rangers or Celtic, you need to have that extra love for the game and he's definitely got that." Idah's Celtic problem explained as former Ireland teammate offers support

Adam Idah has been urged to keep the faith in his quest to become Celtic's main striker. His former international teammate, Shane Long, acknowledges that the ex-Norwich player faces a tough challenge to oust Daizen Maeda from the starting line-up at Parkhead. The £10million departure of Kyogo to Rennes in January, coupled with Celtic's inability to secure a replacement, gave Idah an opportunity to cement his place in the starting eleven. Despite netting twice in a Champions League match against Aston Villa, the £8.5million summer signing hasn't managed to score consistently, with 15 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions this season. In contrast, Brendan Rodgers' decision to shift speedy winger Maeda into a central role has paid off handsomely. The Japanese star's blistering form this season has seen him score an impressive 33 goals in 46 appearances, including four in nine Champions League matches, reports the Daily Record. However, former Premier League striker Long believes it's only a matter of time before Idah truly comes into his own. Speaking to BoyleSports - who provide the latest Irish Premier Division Odds and Betting - he said: "Adam Idah has done okay at Celtic, he's got 23 goals in 65 appearances. "I think the biggest problem for him is Daizen Maeda. He's flying at the moment and it's strong competition. "I think when he does start games, he doesn't light it up as much as he probably should to really cause the manager a few issues, headaches about picking the starting team. "It's when he comes in off the bench that he's really effective so it's a nice weapon for the manager to have. I had it for a while in my career as a super sub. "You're kind of in a catch-22 where you want to come on off the bench and do well, but you don't want to do that thing of always coming off the bench to do well. "He's still quite young, I've played with him and know his ability. "He's strong, he's a link-up player and he's a good finisher so it will happen for him. He just needs to keep believing."

I was linked with Celtic transfer TWICE but here is why the move 'sadly' never happened

Shane Long was linked with a move to Parkhead on two different occasions but it never ever materialised Shane Long has revealed why a move to Celtic never ever happened. The Hoops were linked with the Republic of Ireland international on two separate occasions - but both times a move never materialised. ‌ The former Reading, Southampton and West Brom striker on both occasions ended up not taking the leap north of the border with the first one due to joining the Baggies under Roy Hodgson. A second occasion was 'very close' admitted Long due to him being out of favour at Southampton. He felt he had to leave the club for minutes and the Hoops were keen on his services, but an injury at his club meant he got back in the team and again any chance of turning out in green and white ended once more. Long told BoyleSports who offer the latest Irish Premier Division Odds & Betting: "The first time I was at Reading I ended up leaving to play for West Brom under Roy Hodgson, but Celtic were in for me too. "I was very close to going to Celtic, there was also a transfer window when I was at Southampton when I wasn't really playing in which I felt I needed to leave to play football, Celtic were in for me then too. "It was very close to happening but there was an injury and I broke back into the team. "The move didn't happen in the end and a good friend of mine is now one of the owners and he always asks me why it didn't happen. ‌ "Obviously being Irish and having that opportunity was really appealing to me but sadly it never happened." Adam Idah has a big Celtic problem but I know how he can solve it despite 'catch 22' situation

The Republic of Ireland striker has often played second fiddle to Daizen Maeda through the middle in recent months Adam Idah just needs to keep believing that he has what it takes to become Celtic 's undisputed number nine. That's the view of his former international teammate Shane Long, who admits that the former Norwich man has a real task on his hands to try and dislodge Daizen Maeda in the starting XI at Parkhead. ‌ Kyogo 's £10million departure to Rennes in January combined with Celtic's failure to bring in a replacement had presented Idah with the chance to really nail down a starting berth. But despite scoring a Champions League brace against Aston Villa, £8.5million summer signing Idah hasn't quite been able to find the back of the net on a regular basis, scoring 15 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions this season. In comparison, Brendan Rodgers' decision to move pacey winger Maeda into a central position has proved dividends. The Japan star's red-hot form this season has seen him net a remarkable 33 goals in 46 appearances, including four strikes in nine Champions League games. But ex English Premier League frontman Long reckons it's only a matter of him before Idah really comes into his own. Long told BoyleSports - who offer the latest Irish Premier Division Odds & Betting - he said: "Adam Idah has done okay at Celtic, he's got 23 goals in 65 appearances. ‌ "I think the biggest problem for him is Daizen Maeda.
