Irn-Bru proposes Kelpies makeover for World Unicorn Day alongside new flavours

Our nation's most treasured fizzy juice has announced their intention to give the iconic Kelpies a makeover in honour of Scotland's national animal- the unicorn. Irn-Bru thinks it's time for Scotland's mythical creatures to be cast into the limelight for World Unicorn Day. The bold move has been proposed in celebration of Irn-Bru's launch of its new Unicorn Tears flavoured limited edition of Irn-Bru Xtra. The drinks company has submitted a proposal to Falkirk Council's Local Development Plan 3 consultation that would grant them permission to give the Kelpies a shiny new look. The proposal in question? To mount 15-foot horns onto The Kelpies every year on World Unicorn Day, which takes place annually on April 9. The drinks company's proposal comes complete with detailed CGI artwork that shows how the nationally-renowned sculptures would look post-makeover, which has been carefully designed to match their iconic silver appearance that already attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. The star of Irn-Bru's latest advert, Kelly is the frontman of this Kelpies campaign. The new advert gives a behind-the-scenes look at life on the fictional Greetin' Acres Unicorn Tear Farm, where the ancient art of making unicorns cry is revealed as the secret to Irn-Bru Xtra's brand-new flavour- Unicorn Tears. The historians among us will already be well aware that the unicorn has held the title of Scotland's official national animal since the 1500s, which Irn-Bru wishes to honour with the proposed Kelpies makeover. The pair of monumental steel horse-heads have stood between the Scottish towns of Falkirk and Grangemouth since they were unveiled in a ceremony in 2014. Each stands at 30 metres (or 98 ft) high, and they tower next to the M9 motorway, forming the eastern gateway of the Forth and Clyde Canal, which meets the River Carron. Kenny Nicholson, head of brand at Irn-Bru said: 'The Kelpies are one of the most inspiring sculptures in the UK - an incredible feat of engineering and creativity - so we think they're the perfect spot to celebrate Scotland's most legendary animal. 'By crowning them with a unicorn horn every World Unicorn Day, we can help tell the story of Scotland's centuries-long love affair with the unicorn - from royal seals and ancient coins, all the way to cans of IRN-BRU XTRA's new Unicorn Tears flavour.' "And of course, every drop of our new IRN-BRU XTRA Legend Edition is made with Unicorn Tears, freshly collected at Greetin' Acres - so now feels like the perfect time to give Scotland's unicorn the horn it deserves." The new Legend Editions 330ml cans also include a Nessie Nectar flavour - "lovingly milked from the Loch Ness Monster herself." Both new flavours are available in supermarkets and convenience stores across the UK, sold as eight packs or individual cans.
