Humphrey's HR, 4 RBIs help Ole Miss beat Georgia Tech 11-9, avoid elimination at regional

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Isaac Humphrey had four RBIs, including a home run in the first inning. Will Furniss hit the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh and host Mississippi beat Georgia Tech 11-9 on Sunday in an elimination game at the Oxford Regional. Ole Miss (42-20) plays Murray State — which beat the Rebels 9-6 in the opening round — later Sunday in the championship round but must beat the Racers twice (with a game Monday, if necessary) to win the double-elimination regional. Mitchell Sanford singled, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Furniss to give the Rebels the lead for good in the seventh and Campbell Smithwick hit a solo homer in the eighth to cap the scoring. Kent Schmidt hit a two-run homer and Kyle Lodise added a solo home run for Georgia Tech in the first inning but Humphrey answered with a three-run shot before Luke Hill and Austin Fawley each added an RBI single to give Ole Miss a 5-3 lead going into the second. Drew Burress and Schmidt hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the fourth and Caleb Daniel added a two-run double to give Yellow Jackets a two-run lead. Judd Utermark hit a lead-off homer in the sixth. After Humphrey struck out, Smithwick walked, Hayden Federico was hit by a pitch and Fawley walked on four pitches to load the bases. Luke Cheng struck out looking but Sanford drew a four-pitch walk to make it 8-8. Will McCausland (3-1) pitched two innings of scoreless relief before Connor Spencer came on with one out in the ninth and runners at first and second. Spencer got Burress to fly out, intentionally walked Schmidt and struck out Lodise swinging to earn his eighth save of the season. ___ AP sports:

Terrifying moment two players collide into each other at college baseball tournament

A collision in the outfield was the cause of some horrifying scenes in a college baseball game between Ole Miss and Arkansas in the SEC Baseball Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. With Ole Miss up 5-1 in the bottom of the second, Arkansas Razorbacks batter Cam Kozeal socked a pitch to right-center field. Tracking down the pitch was right fielder Ryan Moerman and center fielder Isaac Humphrey. It's unclear if either of them called for the ball. What is clear is that the two crashed into each other at full speed. As ball caps, gloves, and sunglasses went scattered around the outfield, Humphrey lay down on the turf and didn't appear to move. Moerman got up and slowly ran to the wall to grab the ball, but put up a weak effort to try and throw it into the infield - requiring two cut offs. He eventually went down to the ground as well. Well, it goes down as an inside-the-park home run but we just hope everyone's ok — Arkansas Baseball (@RazorbackBSB) May 23, 2025 Moerman got up to field the ball as Humphrey lay motionless. Humphrey returned to play for the rest of the game, but Moerman suffered a head injury and a knee sprain on the collision. Kozeal beat the throw home to score an inside-the-park home run to cut the lead down to 5-2. Training staff rushed out to check on both players as the two outfielders stayed down for a while. Both players ended up getting off the ground under their own power, however, Moerman tried stretching his legs and saw his left knee buckle. Moerman was eventually replaced in right field, while Humphrey miraculously continued playing. While Moerman cleared concussion protocol, he was later diagnosed with a knee sprain per the Clarion Ledger. He did not return to the game. That run by Kozeal proved to be the final run of the entire game as Ole Miss held on to that 5-2 advantage the rest of the way. Ole Miss will now play the winner of the quarterfinal game between LSU and Texas A&M.

No. 21 Oklahoma baseball beats No. 18 Ole Miss to take series

No. 21 Oklahoma baseball beats No. 18 Ole Miss to take series The Oklahoma baseball team wants to host an NCAA Tournament Regional. With more play like they've exhibited against Ole Miss, it might just happen. The 21st-ranked Sooners beat No. 18 Ole Miss for the second straight day on Saturday, winning 5-3, to take the series. OU will go for the sweep Sunday at 2 p.m. from L. Dale Mitchell Park. Oklahoma led 5-1 heading into the seventh inning when the Rebels began to claw back. Isaac Humphrey hit a two-run single after a walk and double to start the frame. Ole Miss would load the bases with just one out, theatening to pull closer, but Jason Bodin induced a double-play groundball to escape the jam. The Rebels would put two runners on base in ninth before Dylan Crooks struck out Luke Hill to end the game. OU jumped on Ole Miss starter Riley Maddox immediately. Trey Gambill tripled as the Sooners' second batter of the game and Easton Carmichael knocked him in with a home run down the left field line. Mason Hamlin plated another run when he hit into a bases-loaded fielder's choice to give the Sooners a quick 3-0 lead. Austin Fawley hit a solo home run off Oklahoma starter Cade Crossland in the second but OU responded with another Carmichael home run in the fifth to go alongside a bases-loaded walk from Dawson Willis. Maddox worked just 4 1/3 innings for the Rebels. He allowed all five runs on eight hits, four of which went for extra bases, and two walks while striking out five. Crossland was steadier on the other side, allowing just the two runs on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in his six innings. Carmichael was the start. He went 4 for 5 with the two home runs. Jason Walk reached twice with a double and a walk. Gambill hit a single with his triple. Game 3 is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
