Isaac McKneely to visit Tennessee basketball as Virginia transfer guard
Virginia transfer Isaac McKneely is visiting Tennessee basketball on Tuesday, a source with knowledge of the situation told Knox News on Friday. The source requested anonymity because McKneely hasn't announced his plans. Advertisement McKneely was the ACC's best 3-point shooter this season, knocking down 42.1% with 101 made 3-pointers. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 14.4 points as a junior and was named honorable mention All-ACC. McKneely has one season of eligibility left. The Poca, West Virginia, native is a career 42.2% 3-point shooter and is averaging 11.1 points across three seasons. Tennessee will likely look to add a veteran point guard, multiple scoring guards and an athletic forward through the portal this offseason. The Vols have four returning scholarship players in guard Bishop Boswell and forwards J.P. Estrella, Felix Okpara and Cade Phillips. They have three incoming freshmen in four-star forward DeWayne Brown II, four-star guard Amari Evans and three-star guard Troy Henderson. Advertisement Tennessee has used the transfer portal as well as any team in college basketball the past two offseasons. Dalton Knecht and Chaz Lanier are among the biggest portal success stories in college basketball. Jordan Gainey, Igor Milicic Jr. and Okpara have been key players for Tennessee as well out of the portal. Knecht was the SEC player of the year and a first-team All-American in the 2023-24 season with the Vols. The former junior college guard averaged 21.7 points after transferring from Northern Colorado. He was drafted No. 17 overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft and is the highest-drafted player under Barnes. Lanier earned All-SEC honors and has been named an All-American this season. The North Florida transfer is averaging 18.1 points and shooting 41% on 3-pointers. He had made 120 3-pointers to set a Tennessee single-season record, breaking Chris Lofton's mark of 118 that stood since 2007-08. Mike Wilson covers University of Tennessee athletics. North Carolina loses transfer portal target to ACC rival
North Carolina loses transfer portal target to ACC rival The transfer portal was not kind to North Carolina last year as Hubert Davis and staff watched player after player choose other schools. They did walk away with a few transfers, but none that lived up to the hype or were noteworthy. Unfortunately, we are watching the same movie play over again -- deja vue some would say. Isaac McKneely, one of the Tar Heel's first interests in the portal, has committed next season to Pat Kelsey and Louisville. After the Tar Heels were bounced from the NCAA Tournament and the transfer portal opened, Hubert Davis and Jim Tanner were some of the first to show interest in Isaac McKneely, a transfer guard from Virginia who put his name in the portal on the day it opened. The ex-Cavalier averaged 14.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game last season. However, he was known for his three-point shooting prowess. He averaged 42.1% last year from deep and 43.9% from the floor overall. He was the stereotypical guard that Roy Williams would have gone after -- length, shooting, decision making. However, the Tar Heels find themselves yet again on the wrong side of a transfer commitment. They have also shown interest and landed on the outside of Silas Demary (UConn), Dedan Thomas Jr (UCLA), Nick Davidson (Clemson). They are also projected to be on the wrong side of Nick Boyd, who has a 247Sports projection to Wisconsin, and Ja'Kobi Gillespie, who has a projection to Tennessee. One has to start asking the hard question. Can Hubert Davis bring in top talent? Is Jim Tanner the right general manager? Does the team need more NIL money to compete? How can UNC basketball get back on the winning side of the blue blood programs? Guard in transfer portal could solve some UNC basketball issues
The 2025 offseason will be a very important one for the North Carolina Tar Heels as they need to address some key questions to get the program back on the right track. This offseason, like others, will be very active in terms of the transfer portal and next year's roster will look a lot different. With the transfer portal already open following the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, there have been players entering and seeking their new homes. And one of those players should draw the attention of North Carolina. Virginia guard Isaac McKneely entered his name into the transfer portal on Monday and he could be the solution to a big problem that North Carolina has. McKneely spent the past three seasons at Virginia and he's coming off a 2024-25 campaign where he averaged 14.7 points per game and shot 42% from the three-point line. And three-point shooting was a big disappointment for the Tar Heels last season. The Tar Heels shot 35.6% from the three-point line as a team last season, ranking 80th. NEWS: Virginia guard Isaac McKneely is entering the transfer portal, source tells @On3sports. Represented by Drew Kelso of One Motive… — Joe Tipton (@TiptonEdits) March 24, 2025 Now, McKneely just entered the portal and did so with a 'do not contact' tag which means it usually goes through the agents. The 6-foot-4 guard did have interest from UNC before he committed to Virginia but he never received an offer from the Tar Heels. UNC now has the chance to pursue him and solve a big issue as McKneely could provide some valuable scoring for the lineup next season.
