Manama and Muharraq Set for Khalifa bin Salman Cup Title Clash

TDT | Manama Isa Town hosts emotionally-charged match between two of Bahrain's biggest basketball clubs All eyes will be on Isa Town tomorrow as Manama and Muharraq face off in the final of the 2024 Khalifa bin Salman Cup at 7pm at Isa Sports City Hall C. This marks a repeat of last season's decider, which saw Manama claim the crown in dominant fashion. This year, though, both sides come into the match with more than silverware on their minds — it's a rivalry that has long shaped Bahrain's basketball landscape. A Global Stage for a National Rivalry His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Vice President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, called the Khalifa bin Salman Cup final a landmark moment for basketball in the Kingdom, citing strong fan interest and a rare level of international attention. His Highness noted that the game will welcome H.E. Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani, President of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), and H.E. Major General Ismail Al Gergawi, President of the Arab Basketball Federation, alongside elite basketball officials from around the world. Attending legends include former Chinese national team star Yao Ming—one of Asia's most iconic players and a Houston Rockets NBA alum—and German icon Dirk Nowitzki, former Dallas Mavericks star, giving the game a distinct international flair. 'This final is not just a domestic title match,' His Highness said, 'but a global platform reflecting the advanced status Bahraini basketball has reached. It embodies the fruits of years of institutional work and development by the Bahrain Basketball Association.' He added that holding the final alongside the FIBA Congress and Hall of Fame celebrations has drawn the eyes of the international basketball community toward Bahrain and strengthened its reputation as a leading sports nation, especially in basketball. Lead-Up to the Final The journey to the championship game has been marked by some memorable matches and standout performances. In the quarter-finals, Manama posted a resounding 96-82 win over Al Hala, while Muharraq outclassed Al Ahli 81-70, both securing their spots in the semi-finals. Both teams swept their semi-final series in dominant fashion. Manama outlasted Nuwaidrat 84-75 in Game 2, while Muharraq cruised past Samaheej 85-69, showing their readiness for tomorrow's game. Manama aim for a 'three-peat,' while Muharraq look to end their drought since 2017. Tactics and Star Power Manama enter the final with undeniable momentum, powered by their WASL West Asia title and a roster overflowing with talent. American point guard Tony Carr, who averaged 13.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game in the West Asia Super League, will lead the backcourt alongside defensive specialist Mustafa Rashed and the ever-reliable captain Mohamed Kowaid. Inside the paint, the explosive duo of Devin Ebanks and Dewayne Morgan pose major threats on both ends of the court. Muharraq, however, are no strangers to finals. Anchored by the experience of Hassan Nowrooz and Ahmed Hassan, they'll look to counter with a disciplined defensive strategy and a high-post offense led by their import star Vernon Chism. If recent matches are any indication, Manama will love to run the floor, push in transition, and create space with their shooters. Muharraq will look to try to slow the tempo, force tough half-court looks, and own the rebounds. Rivalry of Legends The Manama-Muharraq clash, a major highlight on the Bahraini sports calendar, brings one of the nation's top basketball rivalries to the forefront, captivating fans across the kingdom. Beyond the game itself, the event doubles as a cultural gathering. Fan zones outside the venue and across the kingdom will be packed with supporters clad in red and white, waving flags, beating drums, and shouting chants passed down through generations. Whenever these two meet, the whole country tunes in. Legacy on the Line A win tomorrow would give Manama a record 23rd Khalifa bin Salman Cup title. Muharraq, with six trophies to their name, aim to reclaim the silverware and avenge last season's heartbreak. With the WABA Champions Cup looming, tomorrow's outcome could also ripple into the regional scene, giving scouts and regional coaches a first-hand look at Bahrain's finest.
