Spanish Delegation Takes Notes of Development Momentum in Dakhla-Oued Eddahab
A Spanish delegation from the municipality of La Oliva (Fuerteventura Island, Canary Islands) visited Dakhla on Thursday to learn about the region's development momentum and major structuring projects currently underway in Dakhla-Oued Eddahab. Led by the Mayor of La Oliva, Isai Blanco Marrero, the visit provided an opportunity to explore the region's assets and infrastructure across various productive sectors. 'This visit was fruitful and allowed the delegation to take note of the efforts made to reinforce development in the region at all levels, particularly in the economy and infrastructure,' Marrero told the press following a meeting with the wali of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, governor of Oued Eddahab Province, Ali Khalil, attended by the President of the Dakhla Communal Council, Erragheb Hormatollah, and the President of the Provincial Council, Mohamed Salem Hammia. For his part, the President of the Dakhla Communal Council, Erragheb Hormatollah, said that the Spanish delegation, having been briefed on the various programs and projects underway in the region, expressed admiration for the sustained regional development momentum. He added that this meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the means of bolstering cooperation between the cities of Dakhla and La Oliva. In turn, the President of the Oued Eddahab Provincial Council emphasized that the meeting highlighted key achievements and major development projects in the region, including the Dakhla Atlantic Port and the seawater desalination plant, as well as agricultural initiatives. The Spanish delegation also held talks with the Vice President of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Council, Mbarek Hammia, who underscored the region's investment potential, particularly in fishing, tourism, agriculture, and renewables. In this regard, he noted that the region, due to its strategic position as the Kingdom's gateway to the depth of Africa, has become a prime investment destination offering promising prospects. La Oliva Mayor Isai Blanco Marrero led the delegation's trip to the Moroccan region, describing the visit as fruitful. 'This visit was fruitful and allowed the delegation to see the efforts being made to advance development at all levels in the region, particularly in the areas of economy and infrastructure,' Marrero said. Errageb Hormatollah, president of the Dakhla Municipal Council, attended the meetings with the Spanish delegation, noting that the Spanish delegation expressed admiration for the sustained pace of regional development. He explained that the meetings were especially an opportunity to discuss the need to boost cooperation between the Moroccan and Spanish regions. While the visit comes at a time of flourishing ties between Spain and Morocco, the two neighbors continue to signal their shared desire to further deepen their multisectoral and increasingly wide-ranging ties. The two countries have committed to strengthening bilateral relations at all levels, including security, migratory management, and additional diplomatic relations. Spain made a historic decision in 2022, endorsing Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible political solution. Algeria's regime, which harbors the Polisario Front in Tindouf to serve its regional interests and challenge Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara, received the decision as an affront and a strategic setback. Despite Algiers's continued maneuvers to reverse the deepening Moroccan momentum on the Sahara question, Rabat has continued to secure support from over 113 countries. Many countries have publicly embraced the Moroccan autonomy initiative in the past few years and months, describing it as the only feasible political solution to end the lingering Sahara dispute. Doha – A Spanish delegation from La Oliva municipality in Fuerteventura arrived in Laayoune on Tuesday to explore collaborative ventures in tourism, commerce, and culture. La Oliva Mayor Isai Blanco Marrero led the visiting team during their official engagement. The delegation sought to deepen economic and cultural relations between Fuerteventura and Morocco's southern provinces. Following discussions with Abdeslam Bekrate, Wali of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, Mayor Blanco addressed the press about their strategic geographical positioning. 'This visit aims to further consolidate economic and cultural cooperation between Fuerteventura and Morocco's southern provinces given their strategic positions, as a gateway to Africa for the Canary Islands,' Blanco Marrero told reporters. He discussed Fuerteventura's economic foundation in agriculture, maritime fishing, and tourism, drawing attention to the striking similarities between the Canary Islands and Morocco's southern territories in terms of climate conditions, population demographics, and available natural resources. The mayor articulated his commitment to fostering productive bilateral cooperation, particularly through the development and implementation of local and regional programs where mutual benefits could be realized. At Laayoune municipality, the Spanish delegates attended a comprehensive presentation detailing the commune's development initiatives and ongoing projects established under the new development framework for southern provinces inaugurated by King Mohammed VI in 2015. The session also clarified the critical role played by the elected council in managing local affairs. Mohamed Jifer, Director of the Regional Investment Center (CRI), provided the delegation with an in-depth analysis of the region's economic landscape. His data-supported presentation covered the area's productive sectors from fishing and agricultural activities to renewable energy developments, with particular attention to the substantial potential for green hydrogen production and its derivatives. He also elaborated on the CRI's expanded responsibilities and its function in promoting regional investment opportunities. Both Moroccan and Spanish representatives stressed the necessity of restoring the maritime connection between Tarfaya port and Fuerteventura. According to them, this route would serve as a catalyst for commercial exchanges between Morocco and the Canary Islands, opening new economic channels across the Atlantic. 'This maritime link represents not only a means to connect two geographical points, but also a true economic bridge enhancing integration between the Moroccan region and the Spanish islands,' reported Canarian media sources. Blanco reflected on the profound historical bonds uniting the regions. 'Many of our island's inhabitants lived and were born in the Sahara during Spanish rule. Therefore, a deep human and historical connection exists between us, and today we seek to strengthen it,' the mayor remarked. Throughout their stay, the Spanish officials conducted extensive field visits to numerous socio-educational facilities, economic enterprises, cultural institutions, and sports complexes. These tours allowed them to directly observe the sustained development efforts transforming the region into an integrated economic hub. This visit follows last October's commitment by Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canary Islands, who reaffirmed his government's support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara during a session of the regional parliament. Clavijo had previously declared during his visit to Rabat that his government fully aligns with Spain's policy regarding the region.
