Stetson scores 7 runs in first inning of 11-2 romp over NC State in opener of Auburn Regional
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Isaiah Barkett used three doubles to drive in four runs and Jonathan Gonzalez pitched six shutout innings as No. 3 seed Stetson scored seven times in the first inning in an 11-2 romp over second-seeded North Carolina State in the opener of the Auburn Regional on Saturday. Stetson (41-20) awaits the winner of the nightcap between No. 1 seed Auburn and No. 4 seed Central Connecticut State in a Saturday matchup. NC State (33-20) will play an elimination game against the loser earlier Saturday. NC State starter Dominic Fritton (5-5) retired just one batter and left trailing 6-0 after the teams waited out a 2 hour, 10-minute weather delay before starting. The first five Hatters reached base off Fritton and Barkett capped the big first inning with a two-out, two-run double off reliever Anderson Nance for a 7-0 lead. Salvador Alvarez had an RBI single in the fifth. Barkett doubled and scored on a groundout in the eighth then added a two-run double in the ninth. Josh Hogue and Brandon Novy hit solo homers for the Wolf Pack in the eighth off reliever Jake Gorelick, who pitched the final three innings for his third save. Gonzalez (10-2) allowed five hits and walked three for Stetson. The Hatters have played in 20 NCAA Tournaments but have never advanced to the College World Series. They won their only regional title in 2018. NC State has played in 35 tournaments and made four CWS appearances — most recently last year. ___ AP college sports:

Auburn Regional: Scouting the Stetson Hatters
Auburn Regional: Scouting the Stetson Hatters The Stetson Hatters would present an intriguing matchup for the Tigers. The Auburn Tigers will open up their regional on Friday evening against Central Connecticut State. A potential opponent for the Tigers beyond Friday is the Stetson Hatters from the ASUN Conference. Stetson holds a 40-20 record and won their division with a 24-6 record. Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast shared the conference championship after the final game being canceled due to weather. The Hatters were a solid team on the road this season, posting a 14-10 record away from home. Stetson is coached by Steve Trimper who is in his ninth year with the team. Over that time he is 281-193, and the Hatters are making their third appearance in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. In 2018, they reached the NCAA Super Regional. They were eliminated by North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Stetson is second in the ASUN in batting average at .280. Leading the way is infielder Isaiah Barkett with a .380 batting average that ranks third in the ASUN. He also scored 53 runs with 79 hits and 30 stolen bases. Leading the Hatters with homeruns is infielder Lorenzo Meola with 11. Outfielder Jordan Taylor leads the team with 16 doubles. Stetson was the best team in pitching in the ASUN Conference. They led with a 4.17 ERA. The Hatters top pitcher is left hander Jonathan Gonzalez. He has a record of 9-2 through 14 starts. He is second in ERA (2.26) and first in strikeouts (101) in the ASUN. If the Tigers meet the Hatters on Saturday, it should not be assumed that they would face Gonzalez. Stetson will play NC State on Friday at 1 p.m. CT with the game being broadcast by ESPN+.
